Yosemite OS X Manual - Shelby Johnson
Introduction to Yosemite OS X
Yosemite OS X is the newest Mac desktop operating system, and it promises to deliver a fresh update of a familiar favorite. First released in late 2014, the OS features enhanced functionality of existing apps, and it also provides users with new capabilities and improved integration with iOS devices. The sharing of content across devices has been elevated to a sharing of tasks and functions, making the release all the more intriguing. Released on October 16th, the OS is available at no charge to all Mac users who have compatible computers. The upgrade for eligible devices is available via the Mac App Store.
The eligibility to upgrade to Yosemite is dependent on the hardware and current operating system that is installed. The basic requirements to run Yosemite are OS X v10.6.8, at least 8GB of available storage space, and 2GB of memory. Compatibility for an upgrade also depends on the hardware of the specific device.
Users should check the About This Mac
option from the Apple menu on their computers to confirm their model information. Specific details are located by selecting More Info. The models that are compatible with Yosemite OS X are the mid 2007 or newer iMac, the mid/late 2007 or newer MacBook Pro, the early 2008 or newer Mac Pro, the late 2007 Aluminum MacBook, the early 200 or newer MacBook, the early 2009 or newer Mac mini, and the early 2009 Xserve.
Because compatibility also depends on the current OS, users should check their About This Mac
area to determine what is installed. Systems that are eligible for the upgrade are OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.8, OS X Lion v10.7, OS X Mountain Lion v10.8, and OS X Mavericks v10.9. For users running Leopard, they have the option to purchase an upgrade to OS X Snow Leopard, from which they may subsequently upgrade to Yosemite free of charge.
Installation Options
Users have two options when preparing to upgrade to Yosemite OS X. They can choose to upgrade the current installation or perform a clean installation. With an upgrade installation, the current OS is removed in its entirety from the startup drive. The system files for the OS are updated, and the new OS is installed. The user data, however, is left unchanged. With a clean installation, the process removes everything from the startup drive, and the new OS is installed. Nothing of the old installation remains, including user data and previous applications. Whether opting for a clean installation or an upgrade installation, it is always strongly advised that the user obtains backups of user data and anything else of value on the computer before beginning. Users should also run Disk
