The Magic Book Series, Book 1: Saving the Fairies of Serenia

About this ebook
This is the first in The Magic Book series where twin sisters, Sophie and Felicity, happen across a plain, leather-bound notebook at their school, only it's far from ordinary; it holds a secret. The Book isn't the only thing that's not as it might appear to be; there's something very special about a tree that grows within the school playground too!
Meanwhile, hidden from view in a parallel world call Serenia, the fairies work tirelessly to keep the balance of nature in both their world, and ours. When Serenia flourishes, Earth flourishes, if Serenia were to fall, Earth will fall too - and the unthinkable is happening!
It's a race against time as Sophie and Felicity learn that they are our last hope. They will need to have great courage, conviction and most importantly - unshakable belief in fairies and magic, if they are to stand any chance of out-witting The Wicked One.
But, will it prove too much for these shy, unconfident sisters? Will they be able to find the inner strength and self-belief they're going to need - before it's too late...!

My twin girls, Sophie and Felicity, told me this weekend that I’m still a teenager! Yay! They added that it’s not just because I scrape in at a petite five foot tall, still love to ride ponies and roller skate (well, my husband does have a roller skating club!) But that I also write great stories filled with magic, fairies, mermaids and Unipegs (horses; half Unicorn, half Pegasus ) all on their request! They didn’t mention whether my looks are those of a teenager, other than my height - and I wasn’t brave enough to ask! My plan was for just the one book, but I happily went on to write book two then three and now there is a fourth. Okay, I admit it, I’m addicted to writing! It’s absorbing, mind-stretching and exhilarating - especially when I see my children become so excited as I read to them. Unless, of course, I’m trying to get them to sleep, that is. So be warned; they’ve (happily) been described as ‘page turners’ by my readers - and that includes the parents who enjoyed them too. In fact, I'm really excited to be able to share with you that a recent Bloomsbury critique of my first two books, has described them as: "Plot-driven, imaginative stories, that I can see having real appeal for younger readers." And as having, "vivid characterisation and an inventive world." Very encouraging feedback from such a well respected, mainstream publisher! I also enjoy my time out on school visits, 'book-ish' fun days at bookshops and working as an Ambassador for The Publisher's Association, helping to promote reading - of which I'm passionate about! I hope you enjoy reading and sharing my stories with your children for years to come, as much as I have enjoyed creating and sharing them with mine :) Right, on with book 5!

The Winds of Change
Heather beat her wings harder to catch up with Bryony and linked arms with her. She too was making her way to The Great Oak, central to Serenia (home to the fairies) and where all their important events and meetings took place.
Are you okay Bryony?
she asked her pre-occupied friend.
I’m just thinking about Nightshade. I really miss his company. He doesn’t even acknowledge me anymore. We used to be so close, more like brother and sister than just friends."
Well, I don’t think it’s personal; he seems to treat everyone with contempt these days. I don’t know what’s going on with him, but you're best to steer clear. He’s been determined to stir up trouble, and I’m sure Queen Tara has had quite enough!
Bryony nodded and swiped her hand at a stray piece of hair tickling her face. She wasn’t actually angry though; it was just her way of controlling tears that threatened to overwhelm her.
A strong gust of wind suddenly blew through the valley; flinging the girls sideways, narrowly missing a tree Wow! What’s up with this weather?
grumbled Heather, leaning into the blustery headwind. It seems determined to push us backwards!
As abruptly as the wind had swept in, it ceased. Heather and Bryony, shot forward, narrowly missing bumping into the back of their colleagues.
Sorry!
Bryony said as they passed, then turned back to Heather. Did you get caught out in the rain this morning it?
Luckily, no; I’d just stopped off for a drink. I swear I didn’t see a cloud in the sky just seconds before. Did you?
No, not a single one,
agreed Bryony. It swept in so fast, like the wind just now. I’m glad it only lasted a few seconds otherwise I’d have been drenched.
The plants seem to be feeling it too; they’re really sickly. The worrying thing is that no one has any idea what’s wrong with them, and nothing we try seems to make any difference. If things don’t change soon we’re going to be in big trouble,
grimaced Heather.
Hmm, Earth too,
Bryony said. Queen Tara was reminding us again just last week how Serenia is its lifeblood. The humans must be noticing changes in weather patterns by now.
Apparently the humans call it ‘Global Warming' – whatever they mean by that! Well, at least they’re lucky in that they have no real idea just how serious this could be. And I don’t envy Queen Tara having the responsibility for our survival, as well as theirs! I’m sure all this started the same time as Nightshade began playing up.
My guess is that this has to be what this emergency meeting is about,
Bryony said as they took their seats near the back of the assembled mass.
Both fairies became aware of an uncomfortable silence which wouldn’t usually exist. Chatter, laughter and sounds of their friends going about their business of tending to nature were the usual sounds, not this overbearing, unnerving quiet! Everyone seemed on tenterhooks, waiting to hear what Queen Tara had to say so urgently and, to make matters worse, she was late – she was never late! Concerned murmuring had started to ripple through the crowd.
Look Bryony!
Heather pointed to a silhouette in the sky, moving in at speed. Isn’t that Queen Tara’s personal assistant, Poppy?
Poppy’s approach to The Great Oak’s stage was far too fast, and the fairies in the front row reached out to steady her before she tipped over into the crowd. She’d already started to speak: "I can’t find Queen Tara anywhere, and I can’t find The Book either; they’ve vanished!" A collective gasp rose from the crowd as Poppy crumpled into a heap, and sobbed.
Bryony’s hand tightened around Heather’s; that feeling of dread that had been following her around like a menacing shadow seemed to have just wrapped its icy self around her heart. Nothing in the history of Serenia had ever happened like this before. The Book of Serenia was
