CHAPTER 1
"Were you really going to do it?" I said as we peered on the San Francisco Bay.
The still of the night was calming and the humming lights from the traffic had a soothing effect on the eyes. Yegor brought me to his favorite spot in his hometown to look over the water and get away from the craziness of the wrestling business for a moment.
Hours ago I’d made my professional debut. It was one of the most exhilarating moments of my life. There was absolutely no high like walking through that curtain with tens of thousands of people cheering for you and millions watching worldwide.
Yegor was back to the top of the card, rebooted as a new heel character named Y.X. He solidified his new run through the mid card, crushing our buddy Chad (known on screen as Chadwick Cambridge) in a dominant performance at the pay per view. The industry was already buzzing about his new character and the dominant direction he was taking towards the top of the card.
I sat back in the grassy patch as the lights of the night traffic acted as our entertainment. Yegor stared into the abyss of the bay deep in thought. This was his oasis. This was his oyster. Bringing me here was genuinely a sign of his devotion to our relationship.
He paused before gathering his thoughts, then replied to my question.
Yes,
he said frankly. Never one to mince his words, he admitted freely that his other option beyond a career in this business was suicide. It was succeed or death. There weren’t any words I could offer to settle the situation. I let the moment pass. Yegor was a tough cookie; his certainty was that of dead seriousness.
Tomorrow I can show you my town,
he offered. Oakland was his hometown and we were here for a few days. The WWW Sunday pay per view and Monday weekly program were both in the Bay.
What is it about this place?
I asked.
This is where I come to think. This is where I come to collect my thoughts. This is my mental gym,
he replied. I smirked. It made enough sense.
Your Mother… Elena,
I began a follow up question.
Yes, what about her?
he mumbled.
You introduced me to her as your girlfriend. Is that how you feel? Is that what we are?
I said with a beaming smile. He cracked a half smile. That was the best I was going to get.
I may have spoke too soon,
he commented.
What is that supposed to mean?
Things are complicated. Life is complicated. These types of things take time,
he asserted. I hesitated at his statement. I was not feeling the backtrack talk.
I understand,
I forced.
That’s why I love you,
he replied and put his warm arm around me. I rested my head on his shoulder and enjoyed the moment. Here we were; two of the toughest wrestlers in the country having a heartfelt moment behind the world’s back. It was us versus them and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
RING! RING! Yegor’s phone rang uncontrollably in his pocket.
Let it go,
I whispered.
That might be one of my mothers,
he hastily corrected. Underneath the tattoos, grizzly man beard, and stoic attitude was still that little orphan child who obeyed his mothers’ beckoning call. Yegor scrunched up his face at the screen before deciding to pick up the phone.
What’s up P?
he said with a flat tone. P was the head of WWW’s road booking and one of the lead writers, AKA our boss. I could hear P clamoring loudly through the phone’s speakers in his thick Philly accent. The phone wasn’t even on speaker, he was just that loud.
Yiggy! What’s up man?!
P asked.
Just hanging out, what’s going on?
Listen, I didn’t get a chance to speak to you after the pay per view. I really need to talk to you,
P insisted. Yegor raised his eyebrow towards me to signal he had no choice.
Sure,
Yegor agreed.
Where can I meet you in maybe 15? Should I head to the church?
the fast talking P asked.
I’m at the bay. I’ll send you directions,
Yegor corrected.
Cool, cool. I’ll see you in 15.
Alright,
Yegor finished. He rubbed my back as he sensed my apprehension. I told you this business is unlike any other.
I wonder what he needs to talk to you immediately about,
I mumbled.
It could be anything. That’s wrestling. Brianna, you have a lot to learn.
Hopefully we still have jobs,
I joked. Yegor darted his eyes at me silently then averted his gaze back to the water.
You’re laughing,
he stated. This wasn’t a laughing matter. Yegor stroked his beard before going into full reprimanding mode. Our relationship could turn from lovers to student and pupil in a moment’s notice.
In this business, there is no such thing as an unimportant conversation. I told you that already. When P gets here he could tell us anything. He could tell us to go home, he could tell us we’re moving up the card, he could even tell us that we’re being released.
My heart sank. The blur between business and personal was something I hated. Yegor rubbed the small of my back as he continued his story.
Back when I was working as William Paddington that’s how it went. P was always up front but the others weren’t. They’d smile in my face, book me for shows, while at the same time telling people they couldn’t deal with me. No one ever said anything about my injury or my work until the day I was released. And it was P himself that did it, in a casual conversation.
So how did it go? I need to know what to expect. Play along with me,
I instructed. "I’m you and you’re P. You walk in and…"
Okay,
Yegor obliged. Hi Yegor, how are you feeling today?
I’m mad, boo hoo, I hate everyone,
I teased in my best impression of his demeanor. Ok I’ll be serious. I’m doing fine.
That’s good to hear. Listen here, we’re going to go in a different direction with your character. I need you to sign some papers today,
he said, imitating the boss. Are you still in contact with any of the Indy trainers?
And what does that mean P?
I continued.
That means the conversation is over,
Yegor said, switching back to his usual self. "That was the last thing he said to me before I ran into him in Orlando.
