      Knowing God: Wisdom for Life

      The Beginning of Knowledge

      To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth—Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance…. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.

      PROVERBS 1:2–5, 7 ESV

      The book of Proverbs tells us that fearing the Lord is the start of true knowledge. To fear God simply means that you recognize God’s power and that you strive to follow His commands. It doesn’t mean that you should fear that God is a grumpy old man, sitting at the edge of heaven waiting to get you or catch you in sin.

      Getting to know God is much different than knowing facts about God. Many people could tell you the Gospel story from memory, rehearse all Ten Commandments, and explain steps to salvation and yet still not really know God personally.

      Listen as God whispers truth to you through the books of Psalms and Proverbs. Get to know your Creator. He wants an intimate, moment-by-moment relationship with you.

      As believers, we don’t have to go through life on our own, constantly wondering which path to take or worrying over decisions past and future. God has equipped us with everything we need to live a godly life (2 Peter 1:3).

      Stop worrying. Start knowing.

      God Knows Me

      You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely.

      PSALM 139:1–4 NIV

      Many of us grew up with some sort of knowledge of God. Maybe your family went to church every Sunday, maybe your grandmother took you on occasion, or maybe you were a holiday-only churchgoer. Whatever the case, you probably grew up with some idea about God.

      But did you realize that God actually knows YOU? Not just your family or the pastor at whatever church you may have attended—but He knows YOU! Personally. Intimately. The Bible tells us He knows how many hairs are on our heads. Before we say a word, He knows what it will be. He knows when we’re going to sit down, stand up, go shopping, think a thought—everything!

      Even if you’ve ignored God for a lifetime, He hasn’t ignored you.

      Open your Bible and read Psalm 139:1–16. Let it sink into your soul. Even though there are billions of people in this world, God made you and He cares about you. He knows your name. He loves you more than you could ever imagine.

      Ask God to open your heart to His love so that you can be fully aware of Him.

      God Made the Box

      You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

      PSALM 139:5–6 NIV

      You might be thinking—really? How is it possible for God to care about my thoughts and feelings? With billions of people to watch over, how can He possibly know me?

      When we limit our thinking to what we believe is possible, we put God in a box. God is the divine Creator. He made the box. The Bible says that such knowledge is too much for us to grasp. God is the God of the impossible (Luke 1:35–38). He is beyond the limitations of the human mind.

      The truth is, He does know you. He does care. He loves you beyond what your mind can fully understand. He just does. It’s a faith thing. Ephesians 3:20 tells us that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly more than what we could ever ask or even think!

      Caring about us personally is one of those things. Think about the heavens, the stars, the universe, the brilliant colors of the seasons, the intricate way the human body works. God is behind all of that. And yet the Bible tells us that He knows when a sparrow falls (Matthew 10:29)! And He cares more about us than anything else in all creation. How is that even possible? What is impossible to us is possible with God (Luke 18:27)!

      Open up the box. Open up your heart. Ask God to strengthen your faith in Him. Ask Him to help you believe.

      And even if you’ve walked with God your whole life, there is always room to grow in faith. To know Him more.

      My Creator

      For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

      PSALM 139:13–16 NIV

      Not only is God the creator of the universe, He created you! In His image. And while He was forming your heart, the Bible tells us that He set eternity right there inside (Ecclesiastes 3:11). So as long as we live, we will never be made whole until we have made peace with our Creator—until we’ve accepted His love and begin to live out a daily relationship with Him.

      God wants us to know Him. He’s not playing games or hiding from us. He wants us to be fully aware that His power and presence are available to us as we go through every moment of life. He created us to have an eternal relationship with Him.

      You don’t have to wonder what God thinks about you. God has given you His Word that is full of living power (Hebrews 4:12). Did you catch that? God’s Word is living and active! He tells you plainly how much He loves and cares for you. Search out the words of Jesus and begin to know your Creator.

      Heavenly Father, I want to know You more. I believe that You are alive and are working in my heart. I praise Your great name! I cannot fully comprehend Your love for me or why You care for me, but I want to seek You. I ask that You would give me the
