The church sat at the end of the road, a small white painted board church, it had been here for about sixty years since the end of the Civil War. In act it was the only church in town. The church had seen the people of the village born, raised and die here. It was home to these people. So on this night, most everyone in the village was here. They had heard a good sermon by Pastor Samuel, sung a few hymns and taken up some money and now were winding down to go back home when the door opened. It was too late to get anything out of the services, besides all the regulars were here, it was so unusual for anyone to come in late, they turned around, They didn’t know where he came from. He seemed to come out of nowhere. Like a ghost out of the mist. He just walked into the little church in south Georgia. What most of the congregation remembers is that the door to the back of the little wood church in the country seemed to open on its own. It even didn’t make the usual creak that it normally did. He was tall and thin, dressed in black, his face was young but the wrinkles around the eyes told of experience of years older than his age. He came down to the front of the church. To an open seat on the right on the wooden bench. He nodded to the couple that he sat down next too. The Pastor was in the middle of a sermon but he seemed to be mesmerized by his presence. He looked up at the Pastor and. The Pastor continued, but you could tell something was on his mind. He was talking about Moses coming out of the desert to lead his people, he didn’t know yet that the villages Moses had just arrived. After the last sermon, the people were 60 leaving, but not the usual way. It was strangely quiet. The people slowly went out the door, once and then looking back up to the front of the church at the man. He didn’t move, just sat there. The Pastor stepped down in front of the man and said.

How are you doing stranger, Can I help you?

I am here to help you

To help me, how can you help me?

I am here to show you the way

    The way?

    What way?

The way to a new life said the stranger.

The Pastor was dumbfounded, who was this man, who looked so young but had the look of years of wisdom in him. Why was he here, why did he come to his church. If only the Pastor knew what was in store for him. That he was this strangers first apostle.

Where do you come from? asked the Pastor.

    I come from far away

Are you here to stay or travel on?

I am here for a while and when my work is done, I will be gone replied the stranger, as if he knew what was to come.

I am to stay here first, then you and I and others will travel on, but then I will be gone and you and others will carry on my work

The Pastor didn’t know what to say, what was going on? What did he mean he will travel with but, that was impossible, he had his church, his people, why would he want to leave.

I don’t understand said the Pastor.

You will soon, have faith the stranger answered.

Then the stranger stood up, looked at the preacher and said again,

    Have faith

The stranger walked out the door at the front of the church. The Pastor stood there for a minute than said,

    Hey, wait!

When the Pastor opened the door to the church to ask the stranger more, he just stared, he looked to the left and the right down the dirt road. No one was in sight. You could see a good piece down this road, it had a clear view for several hundred yards each way. No one was there

The Pastor closed the door and went up to the alter, bend down and prayed, for he didn’t know what he saw was real or not.

The two brothers were getting ready for the days fishing along the Little Back River that flows down to the open sea on the Atlantic side of the Savannah River. The day always started early, and if they had a good catch would end by noon. It was summer-time, already you could tell by the shimmering waves of heated air on the river it was going to be a hot one. The brothers had been fishing this area since before their teens. Their father had taught them early on how to earn a living from the sea. They never cheated anyone, if fact they did the opposite. They would give away fish to those who were hungry. They were good men. Men of the earth, men of the sea, simple in education but rich as men could be by helping his fellow men. They were standing in their wooden boat by the dock as the stranger walked up. He looked at these men and thought, they will do. Andrew was the older of the two, he was about five foot seven, wearing overalls faded with age, with a head of white hair and white beard. He turned around at hearing the footsteps on the dock. Peter, the taller of the two, about two-hundred and fifty pounds, bald, muscles stretching his overalls, sweat starting to gather on his forehead, heard Peter talk to someone and he too turned to look.

How are you stranger? asked Andrew.

    I am fine

Andrew looked at the stranger, wondering who he was, knowing he had not seen him here before. Not many strangers came down this way, for it was not an easy place to find. The stranger was tall, wearing all black, unusual for this hot weather. Andrew wondered what he was doing here. In this time all strangers were to be feared, yet Andrew did not fear this man.

You are fishermen? said the stranger.

Yes, going out to see what we can catch answered Andrew.

    How has the fishing been?

Mighty poor, not much the past day or two, seems like the fish have all gone away Andrew answered.

Are you worried about not enough fish? asked the stranger.

Not only for us, but for the people who are hungry, the ones back at the village said Andrew.

Can I come with you? asked the stranger.

Why would you want to come with us? asked Andrew.

They say the way of the fishermen are the way of the wise

    Let him come said Peter,

    I like this man

So it came to pass that the three of them were on the boat with Peter at the stern, guiding the rudder, and Andrew with the stranger in the middle.

Looks like we might have to pull with the oars today, there is no wind said Andrew.

Have faith, said the stranger, surely God will give us a little wind today

Then a little breeze started to blow, the sail starting to ruffle, it got stronger and the sail began to fill out, to push the boat down the river. Peter looked to the side
