Tapping her nails on the table top Clarissa Reynolds looked around the sports bar. This hadn’t been her ideal place to meet her fiancés best man, but it was where they wanted to hangout. She wouldn’t be hanging around very long anyways, she had to get to bed so she could get up at 4am and be at work by 5 and be on air at 6 with her co-host for Wake-Up Colorado.
She thought about ordering a drink, something simple but knew she would have to drive soon after she realized it would be better to be safe than sorry as far as she was concerned. She had too much going for her to let it go up in smoke because of a stupid, ridiculous mistake.
Hey babe, sorry to keep you waiting.
Paul kissed her cheek and in the shadows of the bar, she for a moment wondered what had caught her eye across the benefit room the first time, it was his smile she recalled just as he released it for her.
It’s okay, I was just getting worried. You know I can’t stay out very late.
I know, and again, I’m sorry. Babe, I want you to meet my oldest friend. Derek Gaves, this is my fiancée Clarissa Reynolds.
Clarissa looked up, her heart pounding as soon as Paul had said Derek, more so when Gaves escaped his lips. It couldn’t be. This had to be a mistake. No way in hell was it the same man.
It’s a pleasure to meet you.
Derek reached out to shake her hand, the moment his hand wrapped around hers she knew, only to confirm it the moment their eyes locked and his body grew stiff.
Likewise,
Clarissa couldn’t believe it, why hadn’t she figured this out before? She’d tried to facebook stalk Derek plenty of times over the years, curious to find out if he was still with Miranda, but he didn’t have a page—at least not one she could find.
They sat, the two men slipped into an easy report, and for a moment Clarissa was sure she could slip away un-noticed. She needed to get out of this situation; she had to clear her head as everything seemed to cloud her.
So what is it you do Clarissa?
Derek looked at her with that half open, half closed smile that easily still made her toes curl.
She pushed her ash brown hair behind her ear and smiled, "I’m the host of Wake-Up Colorado, well co-host."
I bet that involved a lot of early mornings, or is it just very late nights? You strike me as a night owl.
"I used to be a night owl, but that was long before I had responsibilities and needed to be up early to fulfill them. When we want something, we do what we need to get it. She pulled her cellphone from her purse and checked the time.
Speaking of which, I need to get going. I have to get to bed soon."
Really?
Paul looked up at her, his eyes wide and hopeful like an internet kitten.
Yes, I’m sorry. You have fun with your friend.
Actually, I should get going as well. I have a lot of still get settled at my condo.
Paul was defeated, Fine then, I guess the evening is over. Where’s the new place anyways?
Superior, its close enough to work that the commute is easy enough, but far enough away I feel like I’ve left the office.
Derek stood up, taking out his wallet and some cash.
Paul found a laugh escaping, Well then, I bet you and Clarissa are neighbors.
You live in Superior as well?
He questioned.
Clarissa nodded, Yes, a nice little condo.
Derek looked to Paul and then Clarissa, You two don’t live together?
Not yet, we haven’t found a place just yet that works for both our commutes.
Paul explained.
Shame, maybe soon you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for.
Clarissa wasn’t sure she liked the way Derek said that, or the way he looked at her. I’ll call you tomorrow morning. Be safe.
She kissed his cheek and left, hoping to find some lag time between when she left, and when Derek did.
Clarissa! Wait up!
Derek called out.
Shit.
Clarissa gripped her keys tightly in her hand as she pulled them from her purse. What?
I had no idea that it was you. I’m sorry if that was uncomfortable.
She almost believed him, Apology accepted, I’m sure you need to get home. Miranda or someone must be waiting for you.
I’m single, after spending several years trying to figure out why I was with her, I realized I didn’t want her, I never really did.
That is terrible. As much as I would love to dredge up the past in the middle of a sports bar parking lot, I really do need to go. I wasn’t lying about the early mornings at all.
Do you love him?
How dare you ask me that? Of course I love Paul. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t be getting ready to marry him. Why the hell would you even ask that?
Derek shook his head, running his hand through his still unruly hair. I’m sorry, I was out of line. I just don’t want either of you getting hurt.
Why would either of us get hurt?
She could feel anger boiling inside of her. Why was she letting him get to her this way? "You know what Derek; I don’t have time for you and your shit. It’s been way too long for any of this to matter. I need
