    Pegging in Parallel

The dogs barked straining at their leads as they dragged on their handler the scent strong in their nostrils. They followed its invisible path in the moonlit night through the empty city streets. To either side two other handlers fought to stay on their feet along the pathway into the open concrete plaza lined on all sides by closed shops. The shop shutters pulled down and the graffiti covered metal the only colour in the grim cityscape. A helicopter buzzed overhead cutting through the night sky, searchlight scoured the area, over the rooftops of apartments, down the roads and flickered around the empty concrete plaza.

The cause of all the attention, a man running through the middle hurdling the park bench and quickly skidding past the bin, clipping the edge and sprawling its content across the floor. He looked back at the converging dog handlers and the thudding footsteps of soldiers. The helicopter buzzed overhead swirling around the debris from the bin. His thick brown hair flapped in the wind and black leather jacket buffeted backwards from the down blast. He reached into his pocket, retrieved a black device and hit a button. Sparks crackled around it as a narrow light beamed forward. In front, an outward spiralling of burning air appeared at the end of the light. The wormhole had opened.

Adios, he shouted and dived through.

The dogs bolted at the sight of the wormhole and scampered off out of the plaza taking their handlers with them. The soldiers stopped and stared. The helicopter span out of control from the sudden fluctuation in air pressure. It slid away smashing into the side of a block of flats. The rota tore through the windows and showered the area in glass. The helicopter buried itself deep into the building before exploding. Flames jetted out across the night sky and burning debris filled the concrete plaza. The soldiers ran for cover as it rained down chunks of burning metal and the wormhole closed.

Inside the wormhole, the man laughed as he fell. Ahead of him nothing but darkness and then a pinprick of light grew steadily closer. The mouth of the wormhole opened, and he was spat out onto the hard concrete floor. He looked around quickly and scrambled to his feet, pretending everything was normal. He was still in the same plaza as before, but it was daytime and the shops were open. The city landscape looked cleaner and the sky bluer than the last place he visited. He smiled, pleased he found a more pleasant place to stay.

He looked down at the device and opened the menu screen with the touch of his fingers.

    Re-charge time 1 hour.

He scooted through the menu, selecting the location of his last destination and marked it with an x and wrote a comment. Avoid.

His name was Laurence McCann, and he had been employed to scout ahead parallel universes. A device had been created and the potential for the makers was massive. However, they realised they needed to understand what they may encounter in these other worlds. For some, it would be their nightmares. For others, it would be their deepest darkest fantasies. However, mostly Laurence had discovered they were much the same with a few minor exceptions.

The last parallel world however was a definite one to avoid, a crazed police
