INTRODUCTION TO THE NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY
You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. What you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you’ll discover is yourself
Alan Alda
With the level of consciousness rising in our society today, many people are embracing their natural selves
and stepping boldly into territory that has not in prior years, really been encouraged or accepted. As a healthy hair consultant, I meet beautiful women and men everyday who are stepping into the natural journey, but don’t quite know what they need to do to acquire the look that they want. As a result of not knowing, they encounter challenges that they need help working through and answers for.
Living in a chemically processed society has limited us from being educated on how to maintain, style and upkeep our natural hair. My knowledge of how to maintain my natural tresses has come through much study and dedication to understanding my natural hair, but also through having a desire to help others on their natural journey.
My journey to natural hair began in 2008. The consideration to go natural came as a result of my inner desire to get away from chemicals in every form; food, body products, hair products, etc. I was on a journey of becoming more aware, from a conscious level, of what I put into my body and onto my body. This resulted from being very concerned about the diseases and medical conditions that seemed to be on a rampage within the world. What is causing so much sickness?
was the question that I started with in my quest for knowledge to do better from a health consciousness perspective in my own life.
I have had a desire several times throughout my life to go natural, but had bought into the stigma story
with regards to the way natural hair looked. The few times I had endeavored to go natural, I would only get to a certain point in my transition before I gave up on the process and sought me a jar of chemicals!
The reason for my failures in the past was as a direct result of not being educated in the techniques and how-to’s
of dealing with my natural hair. Since the age of 7, my hair was being relaxed. As a bi-racial child with a white mother and black father, my mother had no idea (bless her sweet soul) how to deal with my tremendous amount of kinky/curly/coily hair. So being encouraged by black family members, she began the process of chemically relaxing my hair.
In the early stages of my transition journey, I discovered that I actually have four different textures in my one head of hair. The hair in the crown area of my head has a kinkier texture than the rest. The hair by the nape of my neck is a softer, looser, more manageable curl texture. The right side of my hair is a tighter coiled curl while the left side of my head has more of a looser coiled curl.
Now, I am very clear in my transition journey story to point out that the initial part of the journey was not an easy one. I am so grateful to my sister Daphne who not only encouraged me to go natural, but on several occasions had to talk me out of my venturing into the beauty supply store to buy a jar of relaxer. My conversation went something like this while I was pulling up to the parking lot of the beauty supply store,
