Autumn Raven
Autumn (also known as Weifarer and Autumn M. Birt) is a travel and fiction writer currently based in Maine where she lives in a small cottage lost in the woods, which she built with her husband and with the supervision (and approval) of two Cairn terriers. With a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University in Studio Arts and English, Autumn once considered a career in illustration. However, an ecology course at Virginia Tech led to a Master of Science degree in Ecology and Environmental Sciences from the University of Maine in Orono. After graduation with her M.S., Autumn has worked for the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. This was a great job that not only let her help the environment and protect local agriculture, but also gave her a paycheck big enough to support her writing habit until finally ... at long last she is now a full time writer and on-line educator!

Dedication
This book is wholeheartedly dedicated to Sparky, our Dragon. He was the best travel companion either Raven or I have ever had, or hope to have, as we journey through this life.
100 Words for Love
There are times when language fails and we realize how very inadequate are our words.
December 23, 2011: I was going to write something this week about alternative holiday traditions, about our realization that the pressure to celebrate a commercialized Christmas is pretty easy to ignore when you limit the time you spend on-line or watching TV. But Tuesday morning changed all of that.
At 7:30 am on December 20th, 2011, our beloved companion of 15+ years Sparky passed away.
It is too soon to write this, but these are the only words I can find that seem worth saying.
On the surface, he was a Cairn terrier and a handful of a one at that. His nickname was Dragon for not only his strong spirit but also for his ability to cause havoc. I could share a million stories which make up a full life, of stealing tea, chasing frogs, kayaking, hiking, the joy of camping he had, his love of all things with engines. But this story isn’t the tale of his life. It would take much more space than this to narrate those happy years. This is a short article on love.
People have complimented me on being brave and determined. They did not know Sparky. For the depth and beauty of his adventurous spirit, mine is but a poor reflection. I promised him I’d live every day in tribute to his life, for he relished and made better every second of it. I will endeavor to emulate him, though just yet it is so very hard.
Raven and I did not lose a child. No 15-year-old teenager would ever let his parents cuddle him the way we could with Sparky. Nor was he merely our companion. He was certainly not our pet
.
Somewhere there is a language where like Inuit with snow, there are 100 ways to describe love. In some unknown tongue there is a word that means the protective love of a mother for her child, the giggling love of sisters, the supportive love of friends. There in that language is how I could tell you how Raven and I felt about Sparky. He was our best friend, our child, our cohort, our conspirator, our cuddler. He was an equal in our family circle and without him we are more than bereft.
Perhaps we need 1,000 ways to express love, a million, a word for every star in the sky even. Then I could tell you what it was to live with and love Sparky and what it was that we lost. Until then, I can only say that he was a joy, a light, the best soul I have met on this blue planet. It was an honor to have lived with him and shared the adventure of his life. And yes, it was an honor to have been loved by and to have loved him.
- Sparky, we will miss you beyond words. Our journeys have separated for a time, but only so we will have more tales to tell each other when we meet again. We will do your best to keep your legacy alive. All of our love for the rest of our lives to you, our Dragon.
The Story of Peligros
The story was related to me as this: As a young man, my father was on ship traveling through the Panama Canal. He and his friend stood at the rail while their ship churned its way through the locks. All along the shore were large warning signs saying DANGER PELIGRO!
My father's friend turned to him and said, I don't know what they are, but Peligros must sure be trouble!
So began the family legend of Peligros.
Adam and I enjoy traveling off the beaten path where there are few maps and fewer people. However, when you take the road less traveled, sometimes you can end up stranded or beaten by the very adventure you thought to pursue. The stories found in this book, as well as our website No Map Nomads, are those sorts of stories: moments of serenity when life is a singular moment of perfection contrasted by the times when everything unravels faster than you can tie it together. I’ve begun to put a name to the root cause of those troublesome days: Peligros.
If you are traveling and something goes amiss, I’m sure it must be Peligros. Every high jinks, misplaced camera (or spare batteries), and missed connection stems from this one cause. I don’t believe it is just bad luck. So beware what you pack or pick up, you might just bring along an unintended traveling companion. But if you do end up with a Peligro in your backpack, try to keep a sense of humor and make the best of it. Travel, like life, runs unscripted and some of the best moments come from unintended detours.
I don't know what Peligros are. I have a theory that they are a cross between
