    Pineapple Juice - George Ngosi

    PROLOGUE

Demister Chopenga had always fancied his houseboy’s wife Nabanda. He was ready to give anything to bed Nabanda… and he used all weapons at his disposal….

The action of the play takes place in the Chopengas’ apartment at the isolated Santorum Farm, in the country side of the mountainous Milanje district.

    ACT 1

    SCENE 1

Chopenga’s house is well furnished. There is a dining set, a coffee table, stools and some comfortable chairs. On one of the stools is a ground phone receiver. On the walls are beautiful family pictures and some decorations. There is one big and beautiful family picture that stands out at the centre. Next to it is a beautiful picture of a woman, the mother in the house. They are a middle class family.

Mr. Demister Chopenga a dark, tall man of about 50 years is decently dressed in a black suit, a white shirt and a matching black neck tie. He follows behind Nabanda as she enters the stage. Nabanda is a beautiful girl with a gorgeous figure but she is from the village. In her mid twenties she is full of life. She is putting on a disturbed face as she enters the stage clad in a national wear.

    NABANDA

    I can’t do it sir.

    CHOPENGA

    (Pleading)Please!

    NABANDA

    No please.

    CHOPENGA

    I beg you please!

    NABANDA

    No please!

    CHOPENGA

    (Desperate) It won’t take long.

    NABANDA

    By God I refuse sir.

    CHOPENGA

We are just alone Nabanda, your husband will not be back very soon.

    NABANDA

God sees everything sir. Please no.

    CHOPENGA

But why for God’s sake Nabanda are you refusing me like the devil?

    NABANDA

I am not refusing anybody sir but I am somebody’s wife, your houseboy’s wife. I cannot do what you want while my husband is still alive.

    CHOPENGA

That means if he can die then we can do it?

    NABANDA

    No sir!

    CHOPENGA

Then what are you trying to say?

    NABANDA

    No sir…

    CHOPENGA

    You like saying no?

    NABANDA

    No sir.

    CHOPENGA

(Sighs)Do you know what I would do for you if you just said yes even just for a second?

    NABANDA

    No sir.

    CHOPENGA

(Chuckles) Do you know that I can turn you into a queen in this house?

    NABANDA

    No sir.

    CHOPENGA

(Holds her and moves with her around the room. Nabanda is timidly frozen) You see all these. They could be yours. See I am a very rich. Come here (Moves her forward and pointing to the audience) Can you see through the window… do you see that orchard… do you see that beautiful park over there… that beautiful park like the hanging gardens that King Nebuchadnezzar built for his wife! They could be yours…. ours. Just say yes, and you could be the new wife to the Chief Executive of Santorum Farm, Mr. Demister Chopenga.

    NABANDA

No sir, you’ve a wife. Your beautiful wife over there (Points at the picture).

    CHOPENGA

Come on don’t you know that she deserted me? It has been over a year since she left for England. She’ll not come back. She told me she got married to another man there.

    NABANDA

You’re lair sir. Madam cannot do that.

    CHOPENGA

I am serious about this Nabanda. My wife dumped me. My daughter will be coming from school soon. She’ll have no mother. You’ll be her mother. You can dump Sipindulo and I will make you my queen.

    NABANDA

No sir. Why do you still keep her pictures if what you are saying is true?

    CHOPENGA

Do you want me to remove them now?

    NABANDA

    No sir.

    CHOPENGA

(Bored) I am tired of these no sirs.

    NABANDA

    I am sorry sir.

    CHOPENGA

Any way… What does Sipindulo offer that I can’t?

    NABANDA

He is my husband. I love Sipindulo very much sir. We vowed at the altar before the priest that we shall be together; for better and for worse; one flesh till death do us part.

    CHOPENGA

(Sighs) Ok fine! What if we put the marriage thing aside and let’s make it mmmm a business deal. No one will know. I will give
