      Life had only been kind to her once since the day she was born.

      Hours of anticipation preceded the life that was late to come, and a heavy anxiety had enveloped her family. Each second was a torturous experience, an opening for problems or complications.

      Collectively the exhale of relief was heard when her voice screeched over the monitors and noise of the delivery room, when her first expression brought a smile to everyone’s face as she was handed to her mother.

      But the moment they saw her, the smiles turned to puzzled frowns.

      It is so strange. Unfamiliar voices stated.

      For as pretty a newborn she was, there was no way she should have had a full head of hair.

      From a genetic standpoint, it was considered impossible. Her father lost all his hair by twenty-two, her mother’s thin strands were as fragile as her body; inexpensive volumizing spray stuck limply to their structure, only able to do so much.

      Her brother was born as hairless as their father had become; even now, at three, bright blonde hair seemed transparent against his red scalp. He looked at his sister with unveiled
