Chris Gall
Chris Gall has been drawing pictures for as long as he can remember. When he was caught doodling on his desk in second grade, his teacher suggested that he might become an artist some day, then made him clean all the desks in the classroom. In seventh grade, Chris won a Read Magazine Young Writers Award, and that inspired him to create stories to go with his art. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Chris became an award-winning, internationally recognized illustrator, and his artwork has been shown in almost every publication in America, including Time, Newsweek, People, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Washington Post. In 2004, his first picture book, America the Beautiful, became a Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book of the Year, and his career in children’s publishing began. Since then he has authored and illustrated more than a dozen books, including the acclaimed Dinotrux, a 2009 Publishers Weekly Best Children’s book, Dog Vs. Cat, Awesome Dawson, Substitute Creacher, Nanobots, The Littlest Train, and Go For the Moon. In 2015 Dreamworks Animation adapted Dinotrux into a television series for Netflix. Chris lives in Tucson, Arizona.

Impulse grab from the library, because my son just got hired as a substitute. This is very cute, reminds me of that very old German book I cannot remember the name of, full of cautionary tales that will make the target audience laugh. I, as an adult, liked the ending. I have no idea whether my son will relate to it or like it all, though. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I love this book and how graphic it is from front to end. The ending part brings the entire story full circle, which is awesome. Illustrations are great of course. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

I think that this book is one that really impacts children because of the moral behind it, about respecting adults and teachers and others in general. In a world today where so much of what we see is negative, the message behind this story is really pleasant change for children. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

In my opinion the book “Substitute Creacher” by Chris Gall is an entertaining book for young readers. First, the intricate illustrations are engaging and fit the “creepy” monster style of the text. For example, when Mr. Creacher is explaining the boy who could not be found under many objects the picture is very descriptive and paints a great picture. Also, the language is very descriptive and uses figurative language throughout the story, which helps young readers imagine the book. “Her desk was so full that it started to shake. It rattled and lurched like a minor earthquake.” The big idea of “Substitute Creacher” is humor about having a substitute teacher that straightens out a class of bad behaving students. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

I remember in elementary school whenever we had a substitute teacher the class would always start to act up because we did not have to listen. Just as just class did, the students started off by mocking the creature and drawing extra eyes on their body to make fun of the creature. Each time the creature spoke he told his spooky stories in rhyme. He told the students that they had better listen because the creature knew many of many students who had not listened before and had spooky consequences happen to them for not listening. For example Kyle was an artist who drew a a dragon on his test that came to life in a flame throwing rage. Lastly he told a story about a young boy who tricked everyone to steal candy and he turned into a monster himself who was never aloud to return home again. At this point he announced to the class that the monster was himself and because he did not listen he turned into the substitute creature. He gave everyone in the class the candy he had stolen and sulked away but because he did give away all his candy willingly he turned back into the young boy he once was aloud to return home finally. The message of this story is to apologize for what you did wrong and also to think before you act. Obviously readers will not turn into actual monsters for tricking people but there will be consequences. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Genre Critique (Fantasy): This is an very good example of a fantasy book. A good fantasy book will engage the reader's attention while causing them to suspend their disbelief in the incredible things happening in the story. I this cause we read about a classroom of students who are learning from a substitute who happens to be a monster. It is told in a way that absorbs the reader into the story.
Style critique: I found the style of this book to be very engaging. The narrative was told in a regular way, but whenever the teacher spoke he spoke in rhyme. It makes for a fast paced, engaged story. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5

I read this book to a second grader and she loved it. It was about a substitute creacher that warned the students about misbehaving and playing pranks. When the creacher was a child he played pranks on the teachers and he was turned in to a creacher. This book can teach children how to act in a classroom and the consequences of acting out. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Ms. Jenkins’s class is acting up. To get his kids straightened out, Ms. Jenkins sends in the substitute teacher of all substitute teachers, Mr. Creacher. He is a monster who shares terrifying stories with the class about what happens to children who do not behave.
“Good morning to all!
My name’s Mr. Creacher.
Ms. Jenkins has asked me
to step in as a teacher.
She claims that this class
has grown quite out of hand.
So, I’m here to warn you
we’re taking a stand.
Amanda snickered at the way he spoke. Gavin opened a fresh box of tacks. The creature glared.”
