Lisa Power is a tortured ghost of her former self. The author of a bestselling thriller called Thief River Falls, named after her rural Minnesota hometown, Lisa is secluded in her remote house as she struggles with the loss of her entire family: a series of tragedies she calls the “Dark Star.”

Then a nameless runaway boy shows up at her door with a terrifying story: he’s just escaped death after witnessing a brutal murder—a crime the police want to cover up. Obsessed with the boy’s safety, Lisa resolves to expose this crime, but powerful men in Thief River Falls are desperate to get the boy back, and now they want her too.

Lisa and her young visitor have nowhere to go as the trap closes around them. Still under the strange, unforgiving threat of the Dark Star, Lisa must find a way to save them both, or they’ll become the victims of another shocking tragedy she can’t foresee.

Thief River Falls is dark, moody, atmospheric suspense at its best.

I love the way Brian Freeman so easily places me in a setting with just a few words. His writing is never overly descriptive, but I see it all clearly, and I feel every shift in the atmosphere.

This is a story of murder, conspiracy, loss, grief, and a woman walking on the edge of it all. And that twist! Even if you see it coming, it’s still a gut-punch.

I bought the ebook quite a while back, and since I’m terrible about keeping up with ebooks, I listened to the audiobook instead. The narrator does a brilliant job of capturing the essence of Lisa, our narrator, and the mood of the story.

Brilliant story! superb writing. You wouldn't know what hit you! but there are some tell tale signs along the way.......which give you pause. Narrator January Lavoy was perfect as always! Tbh was going to give the story a 4 instead of 5 because there is a point where it absolutely broke my heart! but given that it is so good and also has a good ending I just went for 5 stars :)

This was a mystery/adventure novel with a well developed plot and good main characters, though a bit more character development would have made it better. He relied heavily on the plot, understandably as it is very imaginative and well designed, but more on the characters would make it more enjoyable. Still it is a fast paced, page turner and though slightly predicatable, it is still a good read with a couple of dramatic twists at the end. He does a great job of keeping the pages turning with a well written narrative style that is easy to read.

I love the Frost Easton books by this author, so I thought I'd give this one a try. It was an emotional twisty tale about a writer that lives her own story. Even though Lisa's life is a very sad one, she has managed to write a best seller using her hometown as the focal point for her book. Then strangely, one night she finds herself caught up in a mystery where a ten-year-old boy is being hunted by very bad people. Lisa decides to protect him and literally steps into her own novel. I did not see the end coming but the author did a good job making everything come together. I don't think this book was quite as good as the Frost Easton books, but it was pretty close. Good job, Brian Freeman.

I felt the story was overly contrived. The main character, author Lisa Powers, was written to be more famous than Stephen King or even John Lennon. No matter how small town your town is, not 120% of every human will recognize you. 90% of the book you learn at the end follows the plot line of Powers' claim to fame book, which is terribly contrived and left me often yelling at my Kindle "oh come on!". Then the last chapter throws in a twist that albeit interesting (and you can see it coming a couple of chapters prior), makes you realize you wasted your time on the first 90% of a poorly written story. Freeman had a good plot, but IMHO he stretched the coincidences far too much, and tied so many characters conveniently together. I got this on Amazon Prime's free reads. I guess you get what you pay for.

One of my monthly Amazon Prime selections. I've not read this author before, nor even heard of him. For a thriller it was fine, but not engrossing. I was curious where the story was going, finished the book quickly and found it to be generally well-written. It was a fairly quick-paced plot, easy enough to absorb, without requiring a lot of dedicated attention on the reader's part. Personally, I didn't love the main character--although, I didn't dislike her and wasn't rooting against her by any stretch. Mostly, I found her to be frustratingly naive and overly trusting. I couldn't quite wrap my head around the child who is central to the story, or the geography/distance between where he started and where he ended up at her house. To finish the story, I just had to suspend disbelief and accept it, but if you're the type to try to work it out, I'm not sure it makes sense. Some of the resolution and twists are guessable, but not all. I would neither enthusiastically recommend or attempt to scare you off.
