Writers are often given the advice to figure out our characters’ motivations and goals. Sound advice, given that these elements drive the characters’ actions—that is, the plot.
What does your protagonist want?
The answer can be just about anything:
• Solve a crime … or get away with one.
• Find true love … or escape a damaging relationship in order to get a new lease on life.
• Fulfill a quest … or wriggle out of it.
• Travel to a distant planet … or stay home.
• Get a promotion or coveted job or win a prize … or find a way to exit the rat race.
