Early English (late 12th to late 13th century)

Imported to England from Normandy, the style featured tall lancet windows topped with a pointed arch, symbolising two hands clasped in prayer. Innovations included buttresses, clustered columns and stone vaulted roofs with carved sculptural decoration – often floral motifs. Examples include the choirs of Canterbury Cathedral (above) and the Temple Church in the City of London.
