Few people feature as prominently in the Bible as this month’s character. Shepherd, musician, king, poet, prophet, and precursor to the Messiah, David is the Old Testament’s “renaissance man”, and we have much to learn from him.
From unknown to heralded
The shepherd boy David burst onto the scene in 1 Samuel 17 with his defeat of the Philistine giant Goliath, but earlier Samuel had already quietly anointed him Israel’s king as the Spirit came upon David (1 Sam 16:13). With King Saul’s failure to obey God (1 Sam 15:11), God chose a replacement whose heart was right (1 Sam 16:7).
