A HEART-TO-HEART WITH PUSHPAM MURUGAN

The 1860 Heritage Centre and the Magazine Barracks Remembrance Association recently held an ‘In Conversation’ with Pushpam Murugan, a former resident of the Magazine Barracks, a Tamil teacher and the author of ‘Lotus Blooms on the Eastern Vlei’.

AS A youth of the South African Indian diaspora of a country rich in social, cultural and political history, I hang my head in shame and shun my fellow youth for not digging deeper into the archives of our rich past that has set the foundation for our existence today!

A slap of reality is the mere fact that the youth of my generation, referring to those from the Indian diaspora specifically, have become so westernised, that, for God’s sake, many of them barely know of those who “ran so we could walk”.
