TONY HAWK SWOOPS AUSTRALIA ON A WHIRLWIND TOUR

In 2022, Tony Hawk took a heavy slam and broke his femur. Now in his mid-50s, that could easily have been a career-ender, but Tony came back in December 2023 with an incredible video part: Tapes You Leave Behind. Upon its release, Tony said this was the last part he would ever put out. But that doesn’t mean he’ll stop skating.

The Birdman recently came to Australia to celebrate 25 years of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater video game. Tony brought along the Birdhouse squad and threw some demos alongside his speaking shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. Now 55, he can still turn it on for a demo. I caught up with him at the Brisbane Fortitude Music Hall to chat about the early Bones Brigade tours in Australia, the Big Day Out demos, and his legacy as irrefutably the most influential skateboarder of all time.
