What did you do for your matric holiday? Make mistakes? In Pretoria, where I went to school, most matriculants set off for the coast with beer and a swimming costume. Ballito, Umhlanga or Margate. My friends and I continued this centuriesold tradition and drove down in two vehicles: a kanniedood red Golf and an ancient green BMW I’d inherited from my mom. It was all part of my cunning plan to split from my friends after a week of mistake-making and go on a solo birding mission.
