RACE TO MESSINA

Although overseen at a distance by Eisenhower, the invasion of Sicily was characterised by the rivalry between Montgomery and General George S Patton. Both veterans of the First World War, Montgomery and Patton saw heavy combat and were wounded during that conflict.
