Ever since I spotted the stealthy sapling, I have allowed it to grow. An exercise in cruelty; for I always knew it couldn’t stay, that all its efforts at life would prove futile. An exercise in defiance, perhaps; for I always knew Val would have had it out of there as soon as she saw it.

But I was curious. Surely it could do no harm to let it spread its leaves a little.
