Fliss was taking her early morning walk along the promenade, thinking how beautiful it was there. This was her favourite time, before it got busy. She almost had it to herself apart from a few dog walkers, who all recognised her by now, nodding and smiling as they passed. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming in this small, Welsh seaside town.
She stopped at the refreshments kiosk and bought herself her usual strong coffee, then settled on a bench overlooking the sea.
The bay was sheltered by mountains on either side. Between Fliss and the sea was a wide, golden beach. Later it would be crowded with families building sandcastles and paddling in the warm shallows, enjoying the gentle sunshine. She might bring Freddie down later. Her grandson had just learnt to walk and she loved to watch him enjoying the feel of the sand between his toes.
