Mexico outlawed cannabis over a century ago. In 1920, legislation was passed banning production and consumption of the plant. Claims that it wasn’t “medicine” and triggered violence led to the prohibition. Now, 100 years later, the country is continuing to, right the wrongs of the past—albeit slowly.
The Spanish first brought the plant to Mexico in the 16th century as a source of industrial fiber. Three centuries later, cannabis was enjoyed recreationally, which is when the demonizing began. It wasn’t until 2009 that Mexico decriminalized possession of up to five grams of cannabis. Last year, Mexico’s Supreme Court finally decriminalized recreational use of cannabis. “Today is a historic day for liberties,” President of the Court Arturo Zaldívar said at the time. “The right to free development of the personality is consolidated in the case of recreational use of marijuana.”
