A HISTORY OF MAPS

PEOPLE first created maps thousands of years ago to represent the world as they understood it. Early maps were inaccurate because of mapmakers’ limited knowledge, but throughout the centuries technology and mathematical calculations have improved to the point where we now have highly accurate world maps. Let’s take a look at how it all started.

THE FIRST MAPS

The world’s oldest known map was found in 1962 in the modern-day Czech Republic and depicts the mountain, river, valleys and routes around what’s now the . This map is an engraving , and it’s believed that hunters used it to plan their expeditions.
