Who wants to be PERFECT?

My friend Julie and I were walking our dogs. It was a beautiful spring day but, rather than taking in our surroundings, I was detailing my training plan for a forthcoming half marathon and berating myself for being behind schedule with a book I was writing.

Was it good enough, I wondered? Would I be able to ‘run through’ my knee pain, meet my work deadline, delight my editor and oversee the renovation of our house? And how would I steer my husband away from booking a holiday when I simply couldn’t bear to take time off?

Julie gave me a look that I could only interpret as, ‘My God, am I dog-walking with a madwoman?’

‘You’re very… goal-oriented, aren’t you?’ she observed.

No one had ever suggested that before, but
