In 1950 it was a magazine article about the Druine Turbulent, a French single-seat ultralight home-built with a converted Volkswagon car engine, that hooked Peter Hodgens into the world of building aeroplanes.
The newly formed Ultralight Association of Australia (ULAA) was lobbying the Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) to legalise home-building of private aeroplanes and Peter got approval to build the Druine Turbulent if he had the instructions translated into English.
