A Summer Of Second Chances In 'Small Town Hearts'

Lillie Vale's new young adult novel follows Babe Vogel, who's perfectly happy in her small town life, even though her friends have mostly moved on — until a "summer boy" arrives to complicate things.

Before Lillie Vale's Small Town Hearts even began, I was struck by the dedication: "To anyone who ever needed a second chance." I'm a sucker for a good dedication. And who among us hasn't ever wanted (or needed) a second chance at something?

I'm also a sucker for good small town story. Probably because I was born a Vermonter with maple syrup for blood. Babe, is also a child of northern latitudes — she lives in a picturesque seaside town in Maine called Oar's Rest. I found her perspective a refreshing change from the usual books of this sort: This young woman actually loves the small town in which she was born and raised and has no grand dreams of moving away for a bigger and better life somewhere else. (I also enjoyed that this was book for older teens that didn't slip into the all-consuming romance and sex that typically accompanies the New Adult label.)
