Hello, sweet friends! I have another brand new makeover to share today, a small glass door cabinet that I picked up at the same yard sale where I found this stunning china cabinet this fall.
I paid $10 for it:
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Clean
This piece was pretty clean, but I still gave it a good wipe down with White Lightning, mixing one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water.
Paint
Once this cabinet was good and clean, I taped off the glass with FrogTape and painted it in two coats of Dixie Belle’s Fluff:
I removed the tape as soon as the second coat went on, while the paint was still wet.
Sand
Next up was sanding. I didn’t want the yellowy original color to show through when sanding, so I used one of these super fine grit sanding sponges…
These smooth out the finish beautifully without taking the paint off those edges.
There were so many options with what to do on the backdrop of this one. Fabric? Decoupage paper? My favorite is transfers! They are just so easy to use, especially as a simple backdrop for this cabinet.
Adding a transfer
After sanding, I vacuumed up any sanding dust and wiped it down with a clean, soft cloth to remove any residual dust in prep for my transfer.
It took me a minute to decide, but I settled on the Floral Home transfer:
This transfer comes with FOUR designs in all!
I went with this pretty one with the peachy blooms:
Seal
Once I had it applied, I sealed with my go-to sealer, Clear Coat in the satin finish, which I applied with the blue sponge:
I had already cut this one into a square so I could get down inside this huge toolbox to seal it, so it worked perfectly here too.
And this makeover was complete!
Small Glass Door Cabinet Makeover Reveal
Here is how she looks now!
Why do I always cover up the pretty with words?? Ha ha here ya go…
This would be great for displaying small collectibles, but I love it for toiletries as well…
It came with three glass shelves that are adjustable.
Faux Distressing
And do you see the “distressing”?
The original color was a yellowy tone, so I faked the distressing using my distressing block and faux distressing technique. (Folk Art makes what they call a layering block that is similar, but it is currently unavailable on Amazon.)
I made my own block by attaching a wooden knob with wood glue to a square of scrap wood as you can see below.
I just dipped my block in Coffee Bean paint, wiped most of it back, and then gently ran the block along the edges:
If you mess up or don’t like it, just wipe it back with a damp cloth right away and try again.
You can see it in action in the video below:
You can see more on how I cheat distress in this quick video:
If you have any trouble viewing, you can see it on YouTube HERE.
Looks pretty legit!
Here it is with the door open…
You can see the transfer in the background a bit better with the door open…
