Indian education must be rooted in the developing soul of India, to her future need, to the greatness of her coming self-creation, to her eternal spirit. A truly nationalist education and curriculum are always inclusive in nature, and mindful of the great diversity that makes One India. Our Education must help children and educators develop love for their nation and a wide, universal appreciation of the diversity in the nation and the world. This book is meant for general audiences and is written in a reader-friendly voice. Much of the inspiration and deeper thought guiding this work comes from the thought and works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. This book introduces 26 themes - each for a letter of the English alphabet - that according to the author should guide, shape or be a part of an Indian National Education. These themes speak of some selected aspects of the essential Indian spirit and may also shed some light on the forms through which this spirit could express itself in educational practice. Some of these could be of greater interest to educators and parents, while others may give educational thinkers some food for thought. In a larger sense this book speaks of the need for rethinking some of the fundamentals and philosophical foundations of an Indian National Education. At the same time readers may also be able to find some hints on curriculum restructuring, pedagogical innovations and administrative reform.

Beloo holds several degrees in Education and Economics, has extensive teaching experience at school and university level in India and the US, and has a keen interest in the educational, social and cultural thought of Sri Aurobindo. She currently lives in Pondicherry and enjoys an almost-retired life that allows her to do quite a bit of reading, some writing, some teaching, some gardening and a whole lot of reflecting on life, living, society, politics, religion, art, literature, India, the World, and everything else under the Sun and the Moon. She writes about things that are of interest to her (at the moment), but tries to go deeper or behind the surface understanding of things, as much as she can, given her abilities at the moment.

In India, we look upon education as a means to get lucrative jobs and earn money. But education is just not about securing jobs in MNCs. Indian civilization had a vast knowledge base which focused on all aspects of the individual and the society. The prosperity and contentment was a by-product of the whole process of living in harmony with oneself, society, Nature and Spirit. Today's education misses out these vital points resulting in slave mentality of students. This book enables the reader in simple way to understand why and what needs to be done for transforming education in India. This book is a must for educators, teachers, educational institutions , Universities, education policy makers and parents.

Beloo gives a clear and concise manifesto for the book- what it IS and what it is NOT, in her introduction. Her purpose is to Put India Back In Indian Education; a purpose in which- if her ideas were to be implemented- she will surely succeed resoundingly.

Meanwhile, there is no reason why parents and teachers should not supplement the academic curriculum of their kids with inputs which are Indian (rooted in the developing soul of India, to her future need, to the greatness of her coming self creation, to her eternal spirit and her rich spiritual traditions) and National ( inclusive in nature, and mindful of the great diversity that makes One India, United India, fostering love for their nation and a wide, universal appreciation of the diversity in the nation and the world).

Through 26 well-researched ideas, each dealing with a specific area of education, Beloo shows how this can be achieved. A must read for all parents and teachers!

ABC’s of Indian National Education, by Dr. Beloo Mehra
Reviewed by – Eeshaan Mahesh (Mythological Novelist)

There are many books, academic papers and newspaper editorials written on the dismal state of our education system. Experts, opinion-makers, well-read citizens, teachers, parents, administrators all have their own ideas and opinions on how to “improve” the rotting system, how to “correct” the mistakes, how to “solve” the problems.
ABC’s of Indian National Education, an easy-to-read thin volume, authored by Dr. Beloo Mehra, a former school teacher and university professor with years of experience of teaching in India and the US, does not offer any quick fixes. What it does offer, and in a highly inspiring way, is a way for us to rethink our education as a whole, starting with the aim of Indian education.
Dr. Mehra uses a rather interesting approach to present several different aspects of the Indian education that must be rethought on a very fundamental level. The book jacket reads – "This book introduces 26 themes –each for a letter of the English alphabet – that according to the author should guide, shape or be a part of an Indian National Education.”
It must be emphasized that the book is not about Indianizing the education in any narrow, chauvinistic, jingoist sense. And that the arguments and ideas presented in the book continue to remind the reader that this is in fact not the true Indian way, is in itself a remarkable achievement of this work. Dr. Mehra speaks of some selected aspects of the essential Indian spirit and sheds some light on the forms through which this spirit may express itself in the educational thought and practice of the country.
ABC’s of Indian National Education asks readers – parents, teachers, professors, educationaladministrators, policy-makers –to reflect upon and rethink some of the fundamentals and philosophical foundations of our National Education. While more thorough research and a deeper analysis of some of the topics included there will make the book much more substantive and comprehensive, even in its present form the book offers several hints on curriculum restructuring, pedagogical innovations and administrative reform.
