About the author
Cenk Sönmezsoy (pronounced jenk sun-mass-soy) is an author, blogger, photographer, and food stylist based in Istanbul. After graduating from college, he moved to San Francisco, where he earned an MBA from the University of San Francisco and worked at a high-tech PR agency. On realizing that he’d rather eat glass than sit through another client conference call discussing another “groundbreaking” product, he returned to Istanbul. There, in 2006, he started a food blog that grew bigger and faster than he ever could have imagined. Published both in English and Turkish, Cafe Fernando (cafefernando.com) has been cited as one of the “World’s 50 Best Food Blogs” by The Times of London. Saveur named it “Best Culinary Travel Blog” in 2010, and the following year awarded the brownies he designed for Dolce & Gabbana “Best Original Baking and Desserts Recipe.” In 2012, Saveur called the piece Cenk wrote about his dining experience at Chez Panisse the year’s “Best Piece of Culinary Writing.” He ditched the corporate world in 2010 and began work on his first cookbook. His Turkish cookbook, "Cafe Fernando–Bir pasta yaptım, yanağını dayar uyursun", published in June 2014, became an instant bestseller and was awarded “Best in the World—First Place” in the Blogger category at the 2015 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards and first place at Gourmand’s “Best of the Best.” The English-language version of his book, "The Artful Baker: Extraordinary Recipes From an Obsessive Home Baker", was published by Abrams on October 17, 2017.

- Reviewed in Australia on 7 July 2024Verified PurchaseNot only do I like the recipes, but I love the back story of how many of the recipes were arrived at. Like many bakers, sorting the wheat from the chaff, or the good recipes from the bad, is not easy. Sometimes small modifications can produce big differences, be it in technique, ingredients or quantities. I really appreciate that someone has gone through all the trials, made the mistakes and and arrived at a great recipe version of what they wanted. Not only do I love the recipes, I love the philosophy behind them. This is the kind of book which gives me confidence that if I make a recipe from it, it will turn out great. Well worth your time and money to buy this book. I'm glad I bought it and only wish I had bought it sooner to be honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best baking book ever
Verified PurchaseI love how specific Cenk is with his recipes as it is often necessary with baking. Baking is an art, and he gets it! My favorite cooking blog and cook book ever. I have it in both Turkish and English and I really appreciate how you have adapted the Turkish one for the available ingredients we have there! Such a thoughtful touch.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best baking cookbooks ever
Verified PurchaseI have many cookery books & am a keen baker. This book was 5 years in the making & you can really tell, the detail & accuracy is outstanding. This is full of sophisticated, no-fail recipes. Many books re-hash similar recipes. Not this one, it is different, modern, unusual (in a very good way). I completely love it. The Appley, Deeply Appley cake was my first trial. Some of the recipes require a few processes, but the results are totally worth the effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book
Verified PurchaseI got it as a present some time ago and I gave it two times already as a present. A great book, the recipes I tried turned up to be great and delicious! The level of difficulty is not very high.

5.0 out of 5 stars This books strikes the perfect balance: classic recipes you wouldn't hesitate to serve ...
Verified PurchaseI have over a hundred baking books, and this is one of the most special that I've added to my collection. I find baking books these days either rehash the same classic recipes over and over again, or try to push the enveloppe by offering recipes with unusual flavours and ingredients - original to be sure, but not usually what one (or one's family) wants. This books strikes the perfect balance: classic recipes you wouldn't hesitate to serve to guests, but different enough that it'll be memorable.
I made the vanilla and white chocolate bundt cake (baked in 2 loaf pans instead of a bundt pan) - it is exactly what I always wanted my pound cakes to be like. The flavour is like the best vanilla ice cream (3 vanilla beans and some extract - seems like a lot but isn't!) and the texture is melting (from the white chocolate). It is so so so so good. I would recommend this book for this recipe alone, but the rest of it is amazing as well. I'm especially keen on trying his preserve recipes using the apple pectin technique. And his caramels.
The incredible attention to detail given to every aspect of this beautiful book is obvious. Overall, a well rounded book with an excellent variety of recipes, beautifully introduced and photographed by the author.
Edited to add: I have recently gone on a brioche making bender. My favourite has been from this book. Yet another reason to keep it handy.
