Their history and current affairs selection are particularly strong, with books ranging from an unusual version of the Crusades from both a Muslim and Christian perspective, to timely accounts of the resent collapse of the global economy.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2015You may find the London you are looking for in these wonderful "off the beaten track" lovely and interesting places. Try "food and Drink" too. You 'll be in for English treats that you won't find amidst the big city hustle and bustle!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2012This would be a far better book were it possible to find different locations described on some kind of area map. Major drawback is that you find something of interest. ...then you are not sure where it is in a city as large as London.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2014Lovely.
I found a few gems in here, that now give me a few new London haunts that are a vast change of pace from the usual crowded spots.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2014We carried this book with us every day during our visit to London. As a result we found delightful places to visit we never would have come upon.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 13, 2014There are lots of books on London and I have read most of them. This one had a unique approach that was gentle and well-researched. It is worth a look.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2013This lovely little book was written by an artist and university lecturer based in London who began to search for places of solitude within the noisy, crowded streets of the capital. Based on personal explorations and recommendations from friends and people she encountered, [Quiet London] briefly describes well over 100 hidden and lesser known gardens, parks, art galleries, cafes, bookshops, cemeteries and other spots where one can relax in an environment free of music and crowds within zones 1 and 2. Each entry includes a photograph, web site, and directions via the Underground and bus. Only a couple of the sites were familiar to me, particularly the London Review Cake Shop within the London Review Bookshop and The Foundling Museum in Bloomsbury, but there were at least two or three dozen sites that looked especially interesting. This is a book that I'll bring with me on all of my future trips to London, and I would highly recommend it for casual visitors and longtime residents of the city.

4.0 out of 5 stars They should have a book like this for other cities
As part of my work I do spend a lot of time in many different cities. I often do not have the time to explore the cities in which I work (sometimes for years) and most guide books I find boring. It would be great if a publisher took up the theme and produced book of this kind for all the major cities in Europe. The question is: do quiet places remain quiet when they become a tourist attraction? rcml

5.0 out of 5 stars Pratique et varié
Très bon guide, clair et précis, parfois plaisamment inattendu, et qu'on voudrait même plus copieux... À recommander aux amoureux de Londres !

5.0 out of 5 stars a luminous selection
There's a number of pleasures to this book. The first is finding those public but almost hidden places that you already know and enjoy visiting. For me, places like The Geffrye Museum Herb Garden, the Kensington Roof Garden, the café at Lauderdale House.
Then there's the promise of finding out that there are other places that you never even knew about, places that you'll like just as much. The choices are not just for the lovers of quiet. Often they are small, out-of-the-way, not particularly well advertised, but places you'll want to return to.
And a third thing - it makes a beautiful gift too. Square, compact, cool, packed with goodies. Something for Londoners, for those like me who love London but are far away, and something for the visitor too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very handy
Agréable petit guide, joliment illustré, pour ceux qui connaissent les classiques de Londres et ont envie de quitter un peu les sentiers battus. je le recommande.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some nice places, maybe not for a young person
I bought this book as a present for a friend. I did not go to London to study the places that are recommended in the book. However, the style of the places that are recommended did not seem to be very appropriate for a young person. In particular, this applies to cafés and shopping places. Some of the parks seemed to be nice recommendations for every age, though.
