The Rabbi's Daughter: Sex, Drugs and Orthodoxy Hardcover – 16 Aug. 2007

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 394 ratings

Brutally honest, beautifully written, The Rabbi's Daughter is the compulsive story of a woman trying to find love, and struggling to make peace with her faith, her parents, and ultimately herself.

Reva Mann was a wild child. Granddaughter of the Chief Rabbi of Israel and daughter of a highly respected London Rabbi, she rebelled strongly and so began a desperate search to discover who she was. In a whirlwind of sex and drugs, Reva strove to leave her strict family life behind her and find her own path.

When, years later, Reva decides she wants to return to her Jewish faith, she leaves London and enters a woman's yeshiva in Jerusalem. Driven by a strong yearning to return to a higher level of spirituality, she is determined to find a strictly orthodox holy man to marry and have children. So Reva begins a new life, wanting to suppress her former desires and needs, and to find her way to God.

In this brutally honest and often shocking memoir, Reva presents to us the secret world of ultra Orthodox Judaism. Fascinating insights into modern day matchmakers, ritual baths, sexual codes of conduct and Jewish practice are depicted, and Reva's journey is brought to life in stunning detail.

Have brought several copies of this book for friends over the years.
Everybody has said it was the best book they ever read and were sorry when they finished it!

I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I learnt a lot and it hinted at a flavour of what the Ultra Orthodox life might be like (although I certainly take it with a big pinch of salt). On the other hand, whilst the book started out interesting I felt kind of depressed by the end.

The writing style was not quite right. The writing was great in some parts and awful in others. Occasionally the tale seemed to veer off track into the trashy rom-com/soft porn genre. Particularly gross was her comparison of circumcised vs uncircumcised aesthetics and the scenes with Sam. I am not a prude at all, but parts of this were just coarse and uncomfortable.

Regarding the actual story, the main character has certainly had a hard life. However far too often we hear "my parents just didn't love me enough," "my parents didn't give me the attention I so desperately needed," whinge whinge whinge etc. Based on the book as a whole, her parents seem flawed (like any parents), yes, but she places far too much blame on them. There was no acceptance of a personal responsibility for the numerous bad decisions and lack of self control in her life.

One thing I will give the author is that she managed to keep me interested/willing to continue reading the book until the end.

This book helped me understand a little bit more about the jewish religion, but someone who has had no contact with the jewish religion would find it hard to understand some of it.

This books gives the non-jewish reader, an insight into some of the jewish ceremonies we are curious to read about. It is really rather exciting, emotional and extremely informative. If there is one book you need to take on holiday, do make it this one. It is just fabulous.

You can learn about tradition, customs of the orthodox Jews, and it is very interesting, to learn and understand a different culture. The Author writes in a nice, sophisticated language. I like this book very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very compelling, shocking memior

I liked this book but there was a lot in it that shocked me. I am Jewish and found the parts about Hassidic customs to be fascinating. I just wondered what kind of mother Reva Mann was when she subjected her children to her sexual partner. The book was funny in spots, compelling in spots. I recommend this book. I think the author was a little too explicit.
