Some of you may have noticed I have been changing my color palette this autumn and winter. As I wrote in a previous post, the earthy brown and rust tones somehow are making me feel more grounded. The pinks are softening my hard edges left over from last semester. Since most of my jewelry and sunglasses are designed around black and white with pops of color, mostly red, I have resorted to wearing my silver and gold hoops with every outfit. Boring!
So I decided to make a trip to my favorite vintage earring purveyor, Sheri’s Vintage Jewelry Collections. A former fashion designer, Sheri has a massive collection of vintage jewelry in every color and a repertoire of even more colorful stories about her adventures in the fashion industry. She works with stylists, costume designers and women who just love jewelry. Sheri also has a special relationship with Lawrence Vrba and is one of the few places you can get his designs. My Lawrence Vrbas have always been big hits whenever I wear them.
So stay tuned and watch for my new selection of browns, amber and beige statement earrings. I also got some sunglasses debuting above.
Are earrings a part of your style and if so do you have a favorite pair that make a statement?
I tend to fall back on a medium-sized pair of gold hoops my daughter gifted me. Both because they look good with everything, and because they remind me of her thoughtfulness. Lately, I’ve been looking for some mixed-metal options to mix things up. Thanks for the post!
I have literally 100s of pairs of earrings, some inherited from my mother, but often go with gold or silver hoops. If I’m wearing a larger statement necklace, I don’t want big flashy earrings, too, so will go with smaller earrings. But if there is a small or no necklace, out come the big and danglies!
My most important accessory, always! I purchased a pair in Philadelphia while shopping with my sister Judy. We were shopping in a gift store owned by Judy’s friend. As soon as I saw these earrings, I was connected! While they don’t necessarily make a huge statement, they are unique and I love them! They work with every piece of clothing I own, from jeans to evening wear… and when I wear them, I feel close to my sister and recall a really fun day together!
I’m always drawn to sparkle and shimmer with earrings…rhinestones, glass beads, diamonds, gems. I love simple, minimal on other women, but that doesn’t work for me. Or rather…lol…it doesn’t show up because of my fair skin. I can remember the first time I got my ears pierced it was in my bedroom in Hawaii. As an avocado tree shaded my bedroom windows, my best pal’s older sister, Army brats like me, the “expert”…she was fifteen, I was ten…numbed my lobes with ice, sterilized a needle…voila…pierced ears. My little, sore lobes lasted a week with little until my father, a military officer, took me to have it done correctly at the department store when I was thirteen. It seemed more special that he took me than my mother who was working that day. Fun and beautiful memories.

I am in love with bold earrings. I just try to make sure that they are not too heavy. I recently purchased some fabulous black oblong hoops.I used to wear only silver and gold, however, with the mixed metals being in now. I wear a mix of silver, rose gold, gold and copper, I shaved my hair off and wear a super short afro so I need my earrings! They have become a part of my body.
I change my earrings every day, choosing them with my outfit of the day. Recently my mother passed away and I inherited her earrings. She always wore big golden earrings with diamonds or pearls. So now I am trying them on, and that is a very intimate kind of being with you mother and looking like her.Sometimes I feel her on my shoulder , saying that I should dare to wear them. Funny what earrings or jewelry can mean to you….I think earrings are a very nice way of colouring your day ( or that of others) and a bit of showing of in a gentle manner….Very nice how you create your looks with them.
Oh, I am kind of obsessed with Oscar de la Renta’s earrings. But there are so many fun options out there. for something less bold I’d head to Chico’s. I love earrings, they can bring just enough flirty to a otherwise quite classic style that I favor.
Thank you for this post! My long time friend from high school and college sent this website to me. She’s a photography teacher at ICP and is fond of your work. As I scrolled through your blogs, I saw this one. I still vividly recall the night she pieced my ears in my family kitchen using ice cubes to numb my earlobes, and then pierced them with a sewing needle. My right lobe still requires a little more wrangling when I insert my earrings, since it’s not a straight run through. I decide what to wear, choose my earrings to complement my outfit and off I go. I love colorful and unique earrings. My favorite pair is from our mutual college roommate, Phyllis who died not long after graduating. They are hoops with interwoven strands of delicate purple cloisonné leaves. I love them and feel like I am with Phyllis when I wear them.
a lovely story, thank you for sharing
I’ve always felt that earrings are like the full stop (period) on an outfit.
Naked without 🙂
i am all in! love big , colorful, bold earrings. they speak volumes about me. your whole outlook resonates with me totally, I am 62.
Diana
I love your style! I turned 60 last October and I’ve been asking myself how do I dress now. I feel the same as you do. Dress how you feel each day! Thank you for empowering women of all ages.
So glad I found you. I have been in a funk lately. I am 64 and now realize how as you get older the more invisable you become to society. Makes me think about how I reacted to older folks when I was younger.
It’s time for me to move on. I don’t want to be one of those old people that looks like I don’t care. I have always loved looking good in my fashion. I haven’t always succeeded.
I feel like it is our duty to show others that it is ok to look nice.
Love this. Thank you for being an inspiration for me.
Jennifer
I love how you mentioned the word duty. What I have discovered is that many young people are fed negative stereotypes about aging. We can show them that it is nothing to fear and certainly nothing to fear when you are 25! So yes care for us and care for them.
When I retired I stopped wearing my earrings. Mostly because I ware large eyeglasses. After seeing how good they look on you decided to ware my favorite large silver and brass ones to dinner . When I got home only had one !! Oh no I lost one. Next day my husband and I retraced our steps on Magazine St. NOLA twice !! Still no earrings. But found a great Cuban restaurant. Okay maybe I can use it as a scarf clip or a hat band. Instead took to a wonderful local jeweler to duplicate the earrings. Know it won’t be identical but will still have the look and spirit. Plus will have a scarf clip.
My fallback are grey/green Tahitian pearls because they were bought on my favourite holiday (about 10 yrs ago).. I own other earrings but they make me feel like me.
I wear my grey/green Tahitian pearls most days, as they remind me of my favourite holiday and they make me feel like me.
It is always amazing how an object can summon up affect, isn’t it? For me, it smells. Every time I very rarely smell Aramis I remember my first true love.
I just discovered your blog and website! I am a costumer and musician and a semi-retired Fairy Godmother. Every day I wake up and decide what to wear! I see YOU en “courage “this radical behavior!!! The sorting process never ends…and I have two or three favorite pairs of earrings. The more they glimmer, dance and sparkle when they are on…the better!!! I have short hair..so they are a Necessary Accessory!!! Thank you for this whole amazing, inventive, FUN site!
Thank you! I hope you share your styling adventures and experiments here and we can support each other in our radical behaviors!
I live in Italy and not far from my house there is a jeweller’s shop/lab run by a man from Sicily who is specialized in working with resins, precious metals and hard stones….He made some beautiful heart shaped buffalo horn earrings using my little boy’s milk teeth as decorative elements. Every piece is original and unique and the result of a genuine craftsman’s creativity. check it out! http://www.zangara.it/
What an incredible story, I love it. especially the milk teeth.
I’m so glad I accidentally discovered you about a year ago. Thank you for making aging fabulous!!! I wil be 62 this year, I was always worried about dressing age appropriately. I always loved being fashionable, I never want to lose that. Thank you for showing that fashion is great at any age. I love it!!!
Bah to rules about anything!
I so want more earrings. Unfortunately, my ears go crazy when I wear anything that isn’t gold…sometimes I can get away with rose gold. I don’t like silver. So I wear the same studs every day and that feels very boring….and don’t feel I can justify the budget to buy a whole array of gold earrings ha ha….
I imagine you must have another thing that can be your signature?
Have you tried vermeil (18k gold thickly plated on sterling silver)? If you buy from a reputable jewelry artist, you get the gold look without spending on gold prices. Vermeil is not like “gold plated”, which is a thin coat of 10k gold plated to who-knows-what base metal.
Have not but I will. Gold-tone is new for me as I have traditionally worn silver.
Have been making my earrings recently using beads and wire and some metal connectors. I learned how to make wire loops on YouTube. My most becoming style is long long linear and it’s the easiest style to make. I use colors to enhance my blue to green eye color and those that won’t blend in with my hair color. The focus when making bead choices when designing is the look of the earring and not the outfit I may wear it with because it’s fun to later surprise myself with an offbeat color combo of outfit and earrings. Downside is I have spent a fortune on beads because sold in greater quantities than I need —if I love the beads I have to buy.
So enjoyed hearing about your process and the way you make those design decisions.
I am a fan of large vintage sterling earrings-usually clip-on. Great with short hair.
Gee..it doesn’t seem that long ago, but when I was in my early 30s, I (sadly) got a box and tossed all of my CRAZY earrings into a plastic sack and tossed the bunch into the dumpster! I promised myself that since I was making a good wage, ($250 a WEEK!) I would STOP BUYING CHEAP JEWELRY! I started buying silver from Tiffany, an occasional gold piece here and there, and other earrings from two designers I loved who were making things in Bali, (Tabra & John Hardy) and, sometimes, some “Old Pawn” pieces of silver & turquoise. Of course, the Tiffany is Classic & never be “out” of style, neither will the Old Pawn First Nations jewelry, John Hardy has become “iconic” and Tabra will always be my “fun” pieces. If I don’t wear any other jewelry, I wear earrings every day…they’ve become my “statement”…the men in my life talked me into cutting my hair, by saying I looked like “an old hippy”…and it’s not often I give in to my desire to wear 4 inch earrings any more either…at almost 70, I guess it’s time to grow up and give up those big beautiful jingling earrings…they look as silly on me as the hair color my 95 year old mother insists “looks natural”…I tell her “when you are 95, Mother, unless your hair is GRAY, IT DOESNT LOOK NATURAL!! No one BELIEVES your hair is NATURALLY AUBURN, WITH NO GRAY!” But, she doesn’t listen to me any more than I listen to my son telling me that I shouldn’t wear Stevie Nick’s earrings! Do what feels right to YOU! But don’t spend all your Jewelery Allowance on Cheap Stuff…ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE YOUNG!! I bought a BEAUTIFUL gold bracelet in Hawaii, back when the price of gold was “high” at $450 a Troy ounce (now its 3x that!) I couldn’t afford to replace that bracelet NOW!!! So, buy yourself something you really LOVE, wear it, love it, and let it appreciate in value….the best of both worlds!
In the 70’s I worked at Off Broadway, on 72nd Street in Manhattan. I learned from the master the late Lyn Dell Cohen, how important jewelry was, fortunately for me I listened and amassed a treasure trove of jewelry. Lyn, taught me to dress every day for the performance of my life I listened and at 68, I do that everyday.
Sonia, Thank you for reminding me of the wonderful Lyn Dell Cohen. Her comment about “dressing every day for the performance of our lives” was so memorable.
It was not until my middle years and up that accessories became an important part of me. With age, I seem to have become more confident wearing statement jewelry. I feel undressed without earrings although if I am wearing a dramatic necklace I will, occasionally, forego them.
In the past I would decide on an outfit and then find a piece of suitable jewelry. As so many pieces of jewelry lay unused over the years, I now pick out a piece of jewelry first and then find clothing to go with it. Everything is getting its turn!
She was indeed a legend and inspiration.
I love this article! I’m not a huge fan of actually wearing jewelry because it always bothers me but I’ve always loved how they look so I’ve started to slowly start wearing them and getting myself used to it and not feeling annoyed of it any more thanks for this! I’m definitely gonna shop your suggestions. But along with this cartilage earrings is also being loved by the women’s.
I have many earrings; each one tells a special story. I love dressing with a lot of color or a little color–just depends. I am very lucky to have earrings that roll with my vibe.
Miss Lyn — YOU are so needed right now. Thank you! You are doing what I urged/plead my Mom. She stopped wearing the color red after turning 50, etc. Thank you!!
Ah yes, we have so much more of life to life these days, it makes me sad when women buy into the idea that we should disappear.
I’ve become slightly addicted to StuffMadeFromThings earrings! Most of them are really very simple and I now have 5 pairs, but covet so many more! My current, everyday staple are the black teardrop hoops – they are just gorgeous – https://www.stuffmadefromthings.com/listing/521993575/black-brass-teardrop-hoops-on-rose-gold
[I love your blog btw!]
Do you have your ears pierced or do you wear clip ons?
Both, my piercings are stretched so I wear clip-ons when I am doing bigger earrings.
This blog is really amazing. The collection of jewellery is super. Actually, I am a fan of large vintage sterling earrings and I have a specific collection of earrings for my special outfits. For jewellery lovers, I found one article on the best jewellery collection – https://www.trendinbuzz.com/fashion/style/go-bling-this-season-with-these-6-hottest-jewelry-trends/
I’m fond of earrings and loves to wear the trending ones. Now, these earrings have made me fall in love with them. I would love to add them to my new collection. Anyways I have a few suggestions for all jewellery lover friends. https://www.trendinbuzz.com/fashion/style/go-bling-this-season-with-these-6-hottest-jewelry-trends/
I really like the way you have mentioned the importance of signature earrings. It was worth to read this blog.
Its really nice website. Thanks for giving full information about EarRings.
A few years ago, I accidentally fell into making jewellery and fell in love with semi precious gemstones and pearls. As my hobby has grown, I reluctantly sell my jewellery but always gift pieces willingly to family and special friends (as long as I have a duplicate for myself!!)
I LOVE earrings. My favourites are bright colurs, especially blues and aqua. I tend to be a bit matchy matchy, but am venturing into clashy clashy!
Thank you for this great piece of information!
Loved these very informative, interesting conversations!
I am 68 and and i have always
dressed in the fashion i chose to wear. You have to please yourself and place yourself First. Own It, Live It!
I do tend to sometimes be to matchy on my clothes and earings. I’m going to try more options now!
Thank you,
Denise Bush

Now, that’s what called Perfection. Keep up!!
Darn it I’ve had to stop wearing earrings because of the pandemic! I have lost two earrings (from different pairs) when peeling off the mask – they just fly away, never to be found!
I wear the first diamond stud earrings my husband bought me 30 years ago and nothing else. Seems boring but I love them and they’re the perfect size.
Not boring at all because they are filled with meaning and love.
