Student Management Information System

Despite the benefits of school management information systems (SMIS), the concept of data-driven school culture failed to materialize for many educational institutions. Challenges posed by the quality of data in the big data era have prevented many schools from realizing the real potential of the SMIS. The paper analyses the uses, features, and inhibiting factors of SMIS. The paper proposes a five-phase conceptual model that assist administrators with making timely, quality decisions. The paper enriches the theoretical landscape of SMIS usage in the era of big data and lays a foundation for the future by establishing an educational decision-making model. Modern universities thrive on the information gathered through well-managed information systems. The overall process of developing and maintaining Academic Information System (AIS) all within the university and without any external assistance is generally regarded as a mark of achievement. This chapter deals with various aspects of AIS such as requirements, development, testing, overall security, etc. Two major options, developing AIS from scratch and deploying a commercially available software solution, are discussed. Typical management strategies are suggested to combat possible resistance from users and to serve a wider-ranging user community in an effective manner. A strong case is made in favor of in-house development of AISs to reduce initial costs and maintenance expenditure. Importantly, the process of design, developing a functional prototype, and overall security aspects are presented in detail. Several recommendations are made to deal with various operational challenges through well-known practices.

School information management system is enhanced into a web based or database record which can be observed to most of the universities and colleges. The aim of this research study is to implement an efficient database for student information management system of Lipa Adventist Academy (LAA) through Microsoft Access as the database, Visual Studio for the development platform, and Visual Basic as the programming language.  It limits only on an admin interface navigating student profiles in a system as an application only. This implementation research study employs qualitative method which revolves in a focus group discussion with two experienced young adults. The information is obtained using primary and secondary sources. Student database information management system for LAA is implemented as it is agreed that it plays a critical role in meeting the needs of academic institutions for sound and accurate control of students' knowledge and/or documents. Database information systems lend a long list of advantages for the school or any institutions. Compare to using Excel Spreadsheet, database offers lesser manual work, user-friendly approach, easy navigation, and data integrity as it guarantees a little to no error in single or massive information update. The system is proved to be more secured, reliable, efficient, accurate, and relevant especially in this time when schools are pursuing distance education. Adapting an integrated student information database management system will not only be beneficial for the LAA administrator, but also favorable for other teachers, students, and even parents. Still, more features are bound to be improved.

This paper is about E-school system which has a great importance in increasing the effectiveness of Turkey's Education. E-school is mainly computerized Education Management Information System. It is dynamic, web-based Student Information Management System for centralized Education System of Turkey that provides solutions for schools so as to manage student data. It is developed by using innovative web based software and database technologies to enhance education and used by any kind of formal public or private preschool, primary and secondary schools, inside or outside Turkey, controlled by Ministry of National Education. Firstly, the article contains a short summary of implementation process, technique, core components, design, and user profiles of E-school. In the main part, it discusses how student information management in Turkey's Education has been handled before and after E-school system. Principally, it emphasizes on how collection, processing, storage, accuracy, analysis and dissemination of student data, organizational policy and productivity, planning, statistic, scalability and transparency in Turkey's National Education sector are improved after implementing E-school. In addition, it focuses on how E-school contributes to teachers, educational authorities, policy makers, students, parents also environment, Education System and Economy of Turkey.

Educational institutions, with the use of a method or procedure, store records (educational information relating to their students and/or employees). These methods of storing information include the traditional file system of storing records, in which information and records are stored in an organized manner in file cabinets as hardcopies. The traditional file system of storing records is however stressful, as retrieval of records is slow (could take hours or even days), and unauthorized users can easily access records they don’t have the right to. With the introduction of Information Technology, Information Systems have been developed to handle the storage and management of records, and as such is easily applied to the educational system. The computerized method of storing files is easier to use, faster in processing and retrieving records, and offers more security. This project utilizes the more recent computerized method, improving it to address the faults and problems existing around the current system in use to store and manage records as well as attempting to inform/educate on the importance of a computerized Student Information System, with an objective to implement likewise for the university: Salem University, Lokoja. A prototype application implementing the computerized method of processing records was developed using Microsoft Access, based on the case study: Salem University, Lokoja.

Decision Support Systems (DSS) are very essential for facilitating the management and daily operations of Higher Educational institutions. They are used to support the decision-making process and can be used in various applications including the work and activities done by academics, admin staff, management as well as supporting students' decisions. Therefore, this research article aims to highlight the importance of utilizing DSS in Higher Education, and introduce and discuss the different applications it can be utilized in. In this research, surveys ae carried out to collect responses and data from the two main end-user categories (server and client), the employees (Academics and Admin Staff), and the students of a higher education institute. The results and analysis show that the use of DSS reduces manual work, gives better data analysis, eases the decision-making process, hence increases productivity, employee, and customer satisfaction, and increases revenue and profitability for the organization.

Design, development and implementation of a three layer cost effective Management Information System (MIS) for typical university environment are presented. Several aspects which are specific for any typical university environment like-nature of diversified data items, continuous growth of data, different categories of users, demand for access, user expectations and huge quantities of information etc are considered for the design and development process. The approach suggested in this paper combines the strengths of a commercial database product and open license technologies. The need for using a standard and commercial database product is emphasized. Two client applications are developed using two different data abstraction technologies which work independently on the common database backbone. The developed model of MIS is tested using the data of a joint degree program offered by two different universities and the sample results are presented.

This study aimed an Administrative tools management system for ACLC College of Iriga Inc. Specifically, this study required to find the data collection of student records in ACLC College of Iriga Inc. to overcome the manual input of data for the registrar and cashier sorting and findings information faster as well as computing the assessment.

Similar to banks and credit card companies, school districts also collect confidential information such as names, addresses, photos, dates of birth and sometimes social security numbers. Much of this information is stored as a part of a district's database on its servers or in the cloud, and it is vital that administrators keep this data confidential and safe from hackers.

This research has described a NQF Conceptual Model specified as a Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagram and associated Information Systems Components which describe an Information Systems view of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). The research has also developed a vocabulary to describe domain and model constructs in accordance with the Guidelines of Design Science Research according to Hevner etal. (2004).
The research provides an introduction to the problem domain of managing National educational Qualification data using information systems and identifies a need for an Information Systems Model of the NQF.
The requirements and stipulations of the NQF for structuring educational data concerning Qualifications, Unit Standards and Assessments undertaken by Students are examined. The research then examines the composition and application of existing Higher Education Information Systems used in the management of Student data to determine key Concepts and Information Systems Components and used by the various implementations.
The research utilizes the Principles of Design Science Research to interpret and communicate the Search Process undertaken during the development of the proposed conceptual model. The Research Process is communicated by developing a Vocabulary and Symbols to explain identified constructs and artifacts that compose the Information Systems Model. The research identifies Symbolic Constructs and develops a vocabulary to express these constructs using three primary Conceptual Model artifacts that progress from a Core Model Entity diagram (CME) through a Core Model Entities Extended diagram and finally to a UML Core Model Relational Entity (CMRE) diagram. The identified Information System Components artifacts in combination with the Conceptual Model expressed in the CMRE diagram allow one to Hierarchically visualize and organize core NQF Conceptual Model entities to structure, relate

and manage Qualification, Student, Course, Unit Standard (Module) and Assessment data in a Credit Accrual Process based on aggregation of Micro (participant) data.
The constructs identified through the research employ the Principles of Hierarchy and Aggregation respectively to conceptually manage the Credit Accrual Process (CAP) associated with a Student accruing Qualification Credit within the NQF. The proposed Information System Components are tested using a case study approach which examines two in depth examples of employing the Principles of Aggregation and Hierarchy to manage Student data as a Credit Accrual Process.
The research finds that it is possible to model the core components of the NQF and deploy it as an Information System at an educational Provider to successfully manage the Credit Accrual Process. The research also concludes that the Student Centric View of the Credit Accrual Process expressed as StudentQualificationCredit by the Proposed Model contributes to the mechanism of Credit Accrual and Transfer and the Principle of Life Long Learning.
The research concludes that the accrual of NQF Credit may technically be extended to individual Assessment level.
Future work should examine the proposed NQF Conceptual Model to see whether it may be augmented with components that could integrate Curriculum Management features capable of reconciling Assessment related Activities and Learning Outcomes with the Credit Accrual Process and therefore enhance the Conceptual Model’s Qualification Management features.

System usability is one of the key elements that should be focused on, especially during the design and test phases of a system, because it provides feedback to system administrators in order to improve the system. In the literature, System Usability Scale (SUS) is widely used as the gold standard method to evaluate system usability. Today, machine learning, which is one of the subfields of artificial intelligence, also provide new perspectives on the evaluation of system usability. In this study, it is aimed to predict usability of a Student Information System (SIS) by using machine learning techniques. In the study method, the Cross-Industry Standard Process for Data Mining (CRISP-DM) steps have been followed. Analysis are performed on two different datasets namely “sus0” and “sus1”. “sus0” dataset is consisted of demographic characteristics (age, gender, department) of 324 students using a SIS of a foundation university in Turkey, also their responses to the Turkish version of  the SUS (SUS-TR). “sus1” includes only responses to the
SUS-TR. C4.5 Decision Tree Algorithm, Naive Bayes Classifier and k-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm are used to create models and performance of the models are evaluated. In the analysis with 80% to 20% hold-out method, the best performance was obtained on the “sus0” data set with k-Nearest Neighbor Algorithm (accuracy = 0.698, F-measure = 0.796 for k = 20).

Every University has thousands of applications streaming in for each course. A single application has a minimum of three stages – the document submitted by the student, his/her interview and finally, uploading the financial proof. Managing all of this singularly is a huge challenge.
