The sepiolid, Euprymna berryi Sasaki, 1929 has been reported for the first time from the west coast of India. This species, commonly called as humming-bird bobtail squid, was observed in trawl catches off Mumbai in December 2006-January 2007. It is an upper sublittoral pelagic coastal species occurring up to 60 m depth.

Sepioteuthis lessoniana memilih julat keamatan cahaya bawah air 1.5-25.0 lux manakala Loligo chinensis memilih 1.5-22.5 lux. Nanwn begitu, kedua-dua spesis mencatatkan julat puncak 2.5-10.0 lux. Sepioteuthis lessoniana mempunyai perangai fototaktic positif yang lebih kuat berbanding Loligo chinensis. Kajian ini memberi pengetahuan mengenai perangai tindakbalas sotong terhadap cahaya tiruan dan memungkinkan teknik penangkapan secara multispesis dan spesis-selektif dijalankan.

Stock assessment of the Indian squid Uroteuthis (Photololigo) duvaucelii off north Tamil Nadu coast from commercial trawl landings was studied during the period 2012-2016. The species is mainly caught by trawl net and the annual average landing of the species was 563.3 t contributing to 2 % to the total trawl landing along north Tamil Nadu coast. L∞, K and t 0 were estimated as 260 mm, 0.84 yr-1 and-0.105 yr, respectively. Total mortality rate (Z), Natural mortality rate (M), and Fishing mortality rate (F) were 4.43 yr-1 , 1.67 yr-1 and 2.78 yr-1 , respectively. t max was estimated to be 3.47 yr. The length at first capture (Lc 50 = 62 mm) estimated by Length converted catch curve method was found to be lower than Length at first maturity (Lm 50 = 80 mm). Furthermore, E curr (current exploitation rate) was found be on higher side than the E max (0.48) and E 0.1 (0.40) which indicates that the fishery is in overexploited stage. Thompson and Bell prediction model showed that a marginal decrease (20 %) in current level of exploitation would help in regeneration of stock for long term sustainability of the resources as well as in achieving maximized economic return.

An exploratory trawling to obtain data on the catch rate, species composition, and distribution of the deep sea cephalophods in the Indian Ocean of southern Java and eastern Sumatera using the RV Baruna Jaya lV was carried out during May 2 to July 7 year 2005.

The fishery and stock status of cuttlefishes along the northern coast of Andhra Pradesh was studied with special reference to the needle cuttlefish; Sepia aculeata Van Hasselt, 1835. Cuttlefishes caught by trawlers along the coast of Andhra Pradesh contributed 68.29% of the total cephalopod landings of the state during the study period (2006-2016). The average annual cephalopod landing in Andhra Pradesh for the study period was 2991 t and the mean annual catch per hour (CPH) during 2006-2016 was 0.47 kg h-1. The cumulative sum (CUSUM) analysis indicated increasing trend in cuttlefish landings of the state during the study period. Stock status plots indicates that cuttlefish stocks along the Andhra Pradesh coast are in the “fully exploited” phase.

The main rope sizes are 50 m, 60 m, 70 m, 80 m, and 90 m. In calm water or wind speeds of less than 10 km per hour, the size of the mainline used is 50 m, and if the wave is big or the wind speed is more than 35 km per hour, the size used is 90 m. The application of the right size keeps the boat and fishing line in balance. The number of catches during one trip is 119,970 kg, with the lowest catch occurred in January, amounting to 1,710 kg, and the largest catch occurred in March, amounting to 82,530 kg. Types of the catch divided into 2: squid with 20 kg and 10 kg. For 20 kg size, mostly obtained in March with a total catch of 2M = 33,040 kg and for the size of 10 kg with a total catch of a size of Y is 23,510 kg.

This experiment used the commercial artificial flashlight baits commonly sold in the fishing shop. The bait has several different light color combinations. The light colors were modified into several light colors by inactivating certain colors and used as treatments. The study is expected to be able to find flashlight bait's most effective color for squid fishing. We applied red-green, green, blue, and commercial bait lights in this study. Each treatment has 3 replications. The effect was expressed as the amount of squid caught. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance. Results showed a significant effect on the number of squid catches. There was significantly different squid catches among the treatments. It indicates that this artificial flashlight bait could be developed to maximize squid catches. This finding can be used for the local fishermen's income and the squid fisheries development.

The potential of the capture fisheries sector in Anambas Islands Regency is quite large so it needs to be managed and utilized properly. It is necessary to know the description of the existing fishing effort so that development in the capture fisheries sector can develop optimally. Hand lines are a type of fishing gear used by fishermen in the Anambas Islands Regency. There are 2 types of hand lines operating in these waters based on the size of the ship's engine, namely ships with motors <15 HP and boats with motors 15-30 HP (pompong handlines). The business of catching pompong handlines produces more fish in terms of types and quantity. Business capital and operational costs incurred in the fishing effort using pompong fishing gear are greater than using handline fishing gear.

The study was conducted in the coastal waters of Bolong, Zamboanga City, Philippines purposely to determine the spatial distribution of S. lessoniana in relation to the depth of water and temporal distribution in relation to lunar phase using size composition and catch per unit effort (CPUE) data. Two sampling stations were established, namely, shallowwater station (Station 1) and deep-water station (Stations 2). Twenty units of squid traps were utilized in the study; ten of which were set in Station 1 and the other ten in Station 2. The traps were constructed using bamboo and green polyethylene netting. Instead of bait, coconut spikelet was placed inside the trap to lure squids. A motorized banca was used to set and haul the traps in the two sampling stations. This study aimed to identify one of the deep sea squids caught in artisanal fisheries by traditional fishermen in Sulawesi Sea, North Sulawesi Province, Indonesia. Samples were collected using the vertical hand line of traditional fishermen. The specimen was identified using Cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1). For morphometric characteristics, all body parts were measured, and each part was compared with mantle size. Results showed that the specimen was identified as purpleback flying squid Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis and had 99.35% similarity to S. oualaniensis (CO1) from China (NCBI-MN101944) with sufficient genetic diversity. Based on the body size, species recorded in the present study belong to the dwarf form, the smallest form of S. oualaniensis groups. The species has the following morphometric characteristics: Head length is 0.28 of mantle length, tentacle length is 1.158 of mantle length, and fin area is 0.5 of mantle length. The fourth arm is the shortest and the second arm is the longest. S. oualaniensis recorded in the present study belonged to dwarf form living in equatorial waters. This finding may contribute to the list of marine resources of fisheries in Indonesian waters.

Gujarat is one of the most important maritime state of the nation contributing to the nation's economy and Veraval is the major landing center of the state. The present study was conducted to understand promising fishing grounds of commercially important Cephalopods using GIS mapping method. The precise data in the form of geographical coordinates of fishing and allied information on the time of fishing, depth of the fishing area, catch details, etc. in a structured schedule were collected from the identified multiday trawlers operated along Veraval coast of Gujarat. Information was then mapped on GIS platform to get the promising fishing grounds and the spatio-temporal distribution of different groups of Cephalopods. The favorable fishing grounds for Cephalopods were located along the south off Gir-somnath district and off Daman coast at a depth range upto 30 m, which resulted in moderate to high CPUE in all the seasons.

In the 2016 excavation season of the Akko Tower shipwreck, a ferrous stud-link anchor chain and a rod, both covered with thick encrustation and concretion, were retrieved from the site. The chain links, studs, and rod were analyzed by metallurgical methods, including: radiographic testing, x-ray fluorescence, light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy, optical emission spectroscopy, and microhardness measurements, in order to determine their composition and microstructure. The links and the rod were made of wrought iron, while the studs were made of gray cast iron with a significant silicon content of 2 wt.%. The welding zone of the links was identified. The chain was end-welded by forge welding, and the stud was fixed mechanically. The design and manufacturing characteristics of the chain are typical of nineteenth century stud-link anchor chain, which supports the dating of the ship. It is suggested that the chain served the secondary anchor of the ship.

Metals and their alloys were used by ancient civilizations based on their appearance and properties. During antiquity, the production process of metal artifacts frequently caused strain hardening, cracking, and loss of strength. In addition, devastating failure has often occurred after long burial periods, resulting from residual stresses and continuous corrosion attack. Therefore, the present study aims to examine how a fracture mechanics approach, integrated with failure analysis tools, may assist archeologists in gaining additional information concerning ancient metal objects. For this purpose, a literature survey of postmortem studies of the RMS Titanic ship's failure is presented, followed by a review of various archeological and historical studies of metal objects and structures made of silver, lead, copper, iron, and their alloys. Lastly, based on the current literature review, a methodology is proposed for analyzing ancient metal artifacts. This approach may assist archeologists in gaining a better understanding of the manufacturing techniques of ancient metal objects, their original shape and dimensions, the cause of failure, and state of preservation and conservation. Moreover, the use of such an approach may be valuable for future conservation and restoration of such archeological metal artifacts.

Selected iron arrowheads and bolts retrieved from the destruction layer of the Crusader castle of Arsur/Arsuf, which was taken down by the Mamluk army (headed by Baybars) in late April 1265, were studied. Being the only site within the boundaries of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem that has thus far yielded more than 1200 iron arrowheads, an archaeometallurgical characterization was performed. The aim of this research was to study the warfare methods and manufacturing technologies used by the Mamluk and Crusader armies. Examination included optical microscopy, SEM and SEM-EDS, XPS and microhardness tests. Analysis was performed on both the metallic iron and iron oxides. Ferrous wooden 'fossils', which were found on and within the bolts, were dendroarchaeologically tested. The microstructure analyses show that the weapons were made of wrought iron. These results are correlated with the function of the weapons. The different microstructures of the arrowheads and the bolts indicate dissimilar manufacturing processes. The graphitization of the ropes on the bolts and the oxide phases on their surfaces both provide evidence of high-temperature fire. The ropes support the archaeological findings that these devices were used by the Mamluks to set the Crusader castle on fire.

The current study was carried out to document different designs of small-scale fishing vessels and gears from selected centers of Nagapattinam to Kanyakumari districts, along the coast of Tamil Nadu. Personal interviews and direct observation were used to gather primary data. The two major groups, wooden and FRP fishing vessels were segregated, out of which 12 types were sub-grouped for design documentation. Based on the type, area and method of operation, small-scale fishing gears were grouped as gillnets, hook and lines, and trawl nets. In total, 12 types of fishing vessels and 9 different types of fishing gears were recorded. Design parameter of each fishing vessel and gear was recorded and technological development in small-scale fisheries was observed. The outcome of the study is a comprehensive database of selected small-scale fishing systems, which can be the source of primary input for researchers, government agencies, and other stakeholders to formulate guidelines and policies.

The catch composition and economic impacts of ghost fishing in the fishing grounds near Suan Son Beach, Rayong province, Thailand, were examined based on interviews of squid fishers and experiments using ghost-fishing squid traps. In the province, 27 fisher families are engaged in squid trap fishing, and each family operates 100-300 squid traps. The catch per unit effort (CPUE) of the traps is 30-40 kg/100 traps/trip. The average price of a squid trap is 135 Thai baht (US$ 4.50), and traps have a lifespan of 1-2 months. Squid traps can ghost fish when they are lost in bad weather conditions, due to gear conflict, or when the trap materials deteriorate. The catches of experimental ghost-fishing traps were examined during two periods in 2017: May-July and August-October. The traps caught cephalopods and other species, both commercial and non-commercial. The commercial species included bigfin reef squid (Sepioteuthis lessoniana), other squids, cuttlefishes, groupers, snappers, and blue swimming crabs. The total number of aquatic animals, total weight, and total economic value of the catches during May-July and August-October 2017 were 51 and 38 specimens; 12 000 g and 7250 g; and 6318.0 baht/27 traps and 5302.5 baht/28 traps, respectively.

Technological intervention in the Indian fishing industry are intended to increase marine fish production of the country. Crude light fishing methods practiced in Mandapam was reported for catching silverbellies (Sekharan 1955, Indian J. Fish., 1955; Anon., 1957, Indian J. Fish). Fishing experiments with light attraction for pelagic fishes using purseseines was conducted by Fishery Survey of India (Ninan and Sudarsan, 1988, Occasional papers of Fishery Survey of India No. 5) who reported that no aggregation was noticed in the areas where water turbidity was high and strong current (above 2 Knots) was present. Mohamed (2016) reviewed light fishing practices in India and suggested restrictions in power of lights used, area of operation, mesh size for exploitation etc (Marine Fisheries Policy Brief No. 4, 2016, ICAR- CMFRI).

The deep sea squid Asperoteuthis acanthoderma (family: Chiroteuthidae) is reported here for the first time from the Arabian Sea of the India. A single specimen was collected while conducting a trial fishing with 49.5m Cosmos mid water trawl onboard FORV Sagar Sampada between latitude 11o 47.767'N and longitude 73o 39.065'E at a depth range of 350 to 400 m during the month of October 2013. The morphometric measurements of the specimen are described and are compared with the same species reported from the North Atlantic Ocean. The female specimen measured 788 mm in standard length, 22.50 mm in mantle length, 89.26 mm fin length and weighed 85.38 gm.

Cephalopods are the third largest molluscan class after gastropods and bivalves.
There are more than 800 species distributed in the World Ocean. Cuttlefish, squid
and octopus were major groups of cephalopods. Diversity of this group
presumably more are still unexplored and recorded, despite Malaysian known as
part of the high biodiversity region in South East Asia. Samples of cephalopods
were collected from selected stations in Sarawak Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)
using otter trawl net with stretch mesh size of 38 mm at the cod end. All samples
used in this study were by-catch of trawling activities during National Demersal
Fish Resource Survey in Sarawak (16 August until 6 October 2015). Trawling
operations were conducted beyond 12 nautical miles from the coast, and the area
were divided into three depth strata, I) 20-50 m, II) 50-100 m and III) 100-200 m.
In total 16 species of cephalopods inhabit Sarawak waters, representing five
families and eight genera. The present study found that high number of species
recorded in depth strata I (14 species) compared to strata II (12 species) and III
(11 species). Six species of the cephalopod in this study were first record in
Malaysian water, namely A. marginatus, A. rex, O. bartramii, S. brevimana, S.
vietnamica and S. prashadi. Hence, information on cephalopods diversity and
distribution in different depth strata could be useful in updating database on
Malaysian marine species diversity.

The present study deals with the design and technical aspects of high opening bottom fish trawl (119 m) locally know as 62 Angali Disco Dol, operated along the Ratnagiri coast of Maharashtra. The material used for the fish trawl is HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and the knot type used for construction is a single trawl knot. Blue colour multifilament netting twine was normally used, having twine diameter of 1.50 mm for construction of netting of wing and Square section, 1.25 mm for belly; while 1.0 mm twine was used for part of belly, lengthener and cod end section. The mesh size of the wing and square section was 1200 mm and reduced down to the cod end section (18 mm). The net was specifically used to catch Ribbonfish, Squid, Croaker, Pomfret etc. at a depth of 20 to 40 fathoms.

In order to overcome the challenges in administering and regulating marine fisheries in the Indian EEZ under central government administration (area 1.86 million km2, which is 92% of the total 2.02 million km2), a zonal management system is proposed. Besides the Territorial Waters (TW) zones regulated by maritime states, the broad marine biogeographic area of the Indian subcontinent were divided into 4, the northwest coast (northeast Arabian Sea - NEAS), southwest coast (southeast Arabian Sea - SEAS), southeast coast (southwest Bay of Bengal - SWBOB) and the northeast coast (northwest Bay of Bengal - NWBOB). There are 13 maritime states based TW zones and 6 regional zones (4 mainland and 2 island) in this proposed plan for fisheries management. A total of 216 specimens of the pharaoh cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis Ehrenberg, 1831, from the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, Peninsular Thailand, were collected, 51 from the Gulf of Thailand and 165 from the Andaman Sea. Morphometry of 37 external characters of specimens of two sexes from the two water bodieswere compared. S. pharaonis from both locations, regardless of sex, were significantly different in twelve characters. Sexual differences were noted. Males and females, regardless of habitats, were different in 8 characters. Differences were more prominent in males than female. In males,10 characters were significantly different, but only 2 characters differed in females. Overall, eighteen characters were significantly different among groups (2 sexes, 2 locations). All differences were supported by canonical variates. The results of the morphometrical differences between the cuttlefish from the two water bodiessuggested thatsamples were taken from separate populations.

The global trade in cephalopods is a multi-billion dollar business involving the fishing and production of more than ten commercially valuable species. It also contributes, in whole or in part, to the subsistence and economic livelihoods of thousands of coastal communities around the world. The importance of cephalopods as a major cultural, social, economic, and ecological resource has been widely recognised, but research efforts to describe the extent and scope of the global cephalopod trade are limited. So far, there are no specific regulatory and monitoring systems in place to analyse the traceability of the global trade in cephalopods at the international level. To understand who are the main global players in cephalopod seafood markets, this paper provides, for the first time, a global overview of the legal trade in cephalopods. Twenty years of records compiled in the UN COMTRADE database were analysed. The database contained 115,108 records for squid and cuttlefish and 71,659 records for octopus, including commodity flows between traders (territories or countries) weighted by monetary value (USD) and volume (kg). A theoretical network analysis was used to identify the emergent properties of this large trade network by analysing centrality measures that revealed key insights into the role of traders. The results illustrate that three countries (China, Spain, and Japan) led the majority of global market movements between 2000 and 2019. Based on volume and value, as well as the number of transactions, 11 groups of traders were identified. The leading cluster consisted of only eight traders, who dominated the cephalopod market in Asia (China, India, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam), Europe (the Netherlands, and Spain), and the USA. This paper identifies the countries and territories that acted as major importers or exporters, the best-connected traders, the hubs or accumulators, the modulators, the main flow routes, and the weak points of the global cephalopod trade network over the last 20 years. This knowledge of the network is crucial to move towards an environmentally sustainable, transparent, and food-secure global cephalopod trade. Cephalopods account for around 2.5% of seafood production. Landings have increased in relative terms by 416% since 1961 to reach an all-time maximum of around 4 million tonnes in 2013, before dropping to around 3 million tonnes in 2019 (Fig. 1a). East Asia and South America, led by China and Peru, drive the increase in production, while Japan has halved its cephalopod production over the past 50 years 1,2 (Fig. 1b,c). Despite an evident global trend of declining cephalopod catches since 2013, their commercialisation in volume (tonnes) and monetary value (USA dollars, hereafter USD) has followed a steady increasing trend, by sixfold in volume and 14-fold in USD, since the 1950s. East Asia and South America (particularly Peru and Argentina, including Malvinas/Falkland Islands) have concentrated the highest production of volume in the last 20 years, staying in the same predominant position since the 80s (Fig. 1b,c). Regarding cephalopod market value, Asian (China, Japan, Thailand, Republic of Korea (South Korea), Vietnam, India), European (Spain, Italy), African (Morocco) and North American (the USA) countries hold the 10 most important fishing fleets in the world 2. Considering relevant stocks of squid and octopus, worldwide catches of shortfin squid (Illex spp., see family Ommastrephidae in Fig. 1a) fell from 850,000 tonnes in 2014 to 200,000 tonnes or less in recent years. Shortfin squid catches in the Malvinas/Falkland Islands have been low (43,400 t) in recent years, and the year 2019 marked the third consecutive year of slow recovery of the South Patagonian stock after its extremely low abundance

A total of 216 specimens of the pharaoh cuttlefish, Sepia pharaonis Ehrenberg, 1831, from the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea, Peninsular Thailand, were collected, 51 from the Gulf of Thailand and 165 from the Andaman Sea. Morphometry of 37 external characters of specimens of two sexes from the two water bodieswere compared. S. pharaonis from both locations, regardless of sex, were significantly different in twelve characters. Sexual differences were noted. Males and females, regardless of habitats, were different in 8 characters. Differences were more prominent in males than female. In males,10 characters were significantly different, but only 2 characters differed in females. Overall, eighteen characters were significantly different among groups (2 sexes, 2 locations). All differences were supported by canonical variates. The results of the morphometrical differences between the cuttlefish from the two water bodiessuggested thatsamples were taken from separate populations.

The manned submersible JOHNSON SEA-LINK II was used for a series of dives on the continental slope of the eastern Gulf of Mexico in September 1995. The deep-sea squids Mastigoteuthis hjorti Chun, 1913 and Octopoteuthis megaptera (Verrill, 1885) were repeatedly observed at depths of 600--850 m. Both species were videotaped alive, in situ, for the first time during these dives. These species share the characteristic of very large fins, almost as long as the mantle length, but their swimming behavior observed in the vicinity of the submersible differed greatly. Throughout most of the videotaped sequences of O. megaptera, it swam with its body oriented obliquely with the head upward, arms flexed laterally and dorsally. The fishery of cephalopods and some aspects of population dynamics of the Indian squid Loligo duvauceli from Veraval and Mangrol in Saurashtra region was studied for the period 1996-99. The average annual landing of cephalopods by trawl in Veraval and Mangrol were estimated at 3911t and 1030t respectively, which contributed 4.8 and 5.7% of the total fish landings in Veraval and Mangrol. Loligo duvauceli dominated the catch (58%) , followed by Sepia aculeata (19%), S. elliptica (19%), S.pharaonis (3%) and Sepiella inermis (1%). The length weight relationship was estimated for males and females of Loligo duvauceli as W= 0.109011 L 2.634609 and W = 0.314656 L 2.185796 respectively. Present study was carried out to understand the Growth and Mortality parameters of commercially important Indian Squid Uroteuthis Duvauceli (D’ Orbigny.1985) based on length frequency data from Pakistani waters. The pooled n=1138 pair length-weight data of both sexes combined were used to calculate the length weight relationship as: W=0.278*L (R=0.9520) length frequency data n=10008 were used to estimate VBGF growth parameters as L =26.25(ML-cm) and K= 0.270 year1 with goodness of fit model were estimated at Rn=0.335. The t0 value was calculated at t0=-0.442. Length converted catch curve analysis gave a Z value of 1.14 year. Natural mortality (M) obtained from Srinath’s method using empirical formula M = 0.4603+1.4753K, M=0.853 yearFishing mortality was calculated as F=Z-M = 0.287 year 1  and the exploitation rate (E) was calculated from F/Z = 0.251 year 1  because the exploitation rate in present study is lower than 0.5.

The present study was conducted to examine the market wise and product wise growth, instability and direction of fish export from India. This study was based on secondary data on market wise and product-wise marine export in terms of quantity and value was collected from different sources like Marine Products Export Development Authority of India and Indiastat. The analytical tools like Markov Chain Analysis were employed to analyze the movement (direction) of export of fish over time, Compound Annual Growth Rate analysis was used to estimate the growth in export and Cuddy-Della Valle method was used to estimate the extent of instability in export of fish over a period of time. Swordtip squid (Uroteuthis edulis) is a commercial species and is obtained through inshore torch-light fishery in the waters off Northeastern Taiwan. Using fishery data collected from 2015 and 2019, we analyzed the characteristics of the fishing ground as well as the spatial and temporal distributions of U. edulis to obtain a preliminarily understanding of resource utilization. The results indicated that the cumulative catch of swordtip squid accounts for 45% of the total cephalopod catch in this area, with the highest cumulative catch and highest monthly average catch-per-unit effort between April and October. In addition, based on the longitudinal and latitudinal gravity centers of the fishing ground, we concluded that in the first 3 months of the year, swordtip squid fishing is mainly concentrated in the area adjacent to Peng-Chia Yu Islet; the fishing ground then moves northeastward and to the waters off Peng-Chia Yu Islet. Lastly, the longitudinal and latitudinal frequency distribution showed that the traditional fishing area is adjacent to Peng-Chia Yu Islet. Further studies are needed to understand the environmental effects on spatial and temporal variations in swordtip squid distribution.

Fleet dynamics was addressed for three cephalopod taxa of commercial interest, the squid Loligo vulgaris, the octopuses Octopus vulgaris and Eledone cirrhosa, and the cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, for 48 trawlers of the fish trawling fleet. Landing profiles (LP) were identified based on the species composition of the landings using hierarchical cluster analysis. Four out of a total of 12 different LP were related to cephalopods and other species associated with them. The effects on the landing proportions of a number of variables, year, season and vessel, are analysed for each of the species studied using generalized linear models (GLM). The factor "vessel", including an ensemble of technical characteristics as well as the abilities of individual skippers, explained most of the model deviance, strongly reinforcing the existence of a fleet component dedicated to catch cephalopods. However, time also explains much of the variation found in the data. Seasonal alternation between landings of octopodidae and cuttlefish was observed within a small group of old trawlers operating mainly off the south coast, following the abundance cycles of these species. For a larger group of more modern trawlers, operating off the western coast, inter-annual shift between octopus and squid was found, together with a well marked seasonal pattern between the catches of cephalopods and horse mackerel. Spatial patterns of activity were identified using vessel monitoring system (VMS) data available for trawlers in Portugal, demonstrating the existence of cephalopod targeting strategies in Portuguese fish trawling activities.

Identification and biological analysis of Cuttlefish (Sepia spp) this could be the basis of information for cuttlefish resource management for sustainability. The aims of this study were to determine the species composition of cuttlefish, determine similarity in morphology among cuttlefish species, and length-weight relationship of dominant species cuttlefish landed in Muncar, Banyuwangi, East Java. The analytical method used is species composition analyze, Hierarchical clustering analysis to determine similarity among cuttlefish species and length-weight relationship analysis of dominant cuttlefish species with the following equation W = aL b. There are three species of cuttlefish were landed in Muncar, Banyuwangi, Sepia pharaonis with 373 individuals (92.6%), Sepia latimanus 19 individuals (4.7%), and Sepia esculenta 11 individuals (2.7%). The results of length-weight relationship analysis cuttlefish dominant species, Sepia pharaonis, the b values obtained in the total sample, males and females respectively are 2.55, 2.56, and 2.57. It shows that the growth properties of S. pharaonis is negative allometric. It means the population has thin body shape where the increase in length faster than weight gain.

This paper describes the cephalopod genera caught with light-traps at different locations and depths in the waters of the central Great Barrier Reef (GBR). Multiple stations were sampled in four locations: (I) the coastal GBR Lagoon, (2) inter-reef passages (Magnetic and Palm), (3) near-reef environments (Keeper, Helix, Faraday and Myrmidon) ranging from mid- to outer-shelf locations, and (4) the Coral Sea. A total of 13 cephalopod genera was caught from monthly cruises conducted from October to January of 1990-91 and 1991-92. Octopus, the most abundant juvenile cephalopod, was present in relatively high numbers at all shelf locations; few were caught in the Coral Sea. Photololigo, the most abundant squid, was rarely caught outside the GBR Lagoon. In contrast, Sthenoteuthis, the second most abundant squid, was caught at all locations. The present study deals with the design and technical aspects of high opening bottom fish trawl (119 m) locally know as 62 Angali Disco Dol, operated along the Ratnagiri coast of Maharashtra. The material used for the fish trawl is HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) and the knot type used for construction is a single trawl knot. Blue colour multifilament netting twine was normally used, having twine diameter of 1.50 mm for construction of netting of wing and Square section, 1.25 mm for belly; while 1.0 mm twine was used for part of belly, lengthener and cod end section. The mesh size of the wing and square section was 1200 mm and reduced down to the cod end section (18 mm). The net was specifically used to catch Ribbonfish, Squid, Croaker, Pomfret etc. at a depth of 20 to 40 fathoms.
