Sense of Place

This photo essay explores some of the meanings of belonging, place attachment, community and heritage within my local community of the lower Blue Mountains, on the urban fringe to the west of Sydney, Australia. I argue that there is a prevailing version of heritage in this locality that constructs belonging in certain ways, excluding and marginalizing some on the basis of 'social locations' such as gender and race (Yuval-Davis 2006, 199). I identify this as a local manifestation of what is known as the 'authorized heritage discourse' (AHD) (Smith 2006), through which hegemonic concepts prevalent at state and national levels such as commemorations of white colonization, play out at the local level. I explore how this dominant discourse creates an ambiguity and dissonance in my attachment to place, further problematized by my status as a white Australian, making me a reluctant beneficiary of the colonial enterprise.

A major challenge of forest policy and management is effectively understanding different people's viewpoints on natural resource use and conservation, and how those viewpoints contribute to conflict and conflict resolution. In response to this challenge, the concept of place is gaining currency in natural resource research. The study of place promises an integrative approach to understanding people's relationships with particular areas. Realiz- ing the potential of place research to inform forest policy and management means conceptu- alizing place as an arena of shared and contested meanings. Denna studie undersöker idrottsrepresentanters syn på ansvarsfördelningen för kostnaderna inom barn- och ungdomsidrotten mellan 2009 och 2023. Målsättningen är att främja en diskussion om vad idrottsrörelsen kan göra för att förändra kostnadsutvecklingen och främja tillgängligheten inom föreningsidrotten.

Studien baseras på intervjuer med representanter från tre idrotter: fotboll (lagidrott med stora kostnadsökningar), ridsport (individuell idrott med små kostnadsökningar) och friidrott (individuell idrott med minskande kostnader). Urvalet gjordes utifrån kostnadsförändringar för barn och ungdomar i åldern 7–15 år mellan åren 2009 och 2023.

Resultaten visar ett komplext mönster av ansvarsfördelning och attityder kring kostnaderna för barns och ungdomars idrottsutövande. Representanter för föreningar och förbund tar ett visst eget ansvar för att hålla kostnaderna nere, men det finns en tendens att förskjuta det ekonomiska ansvaret nedåt, åt sidan och uppåt i organisationsstrukturen. Anmärkningsvärt är att vissa representanter inom både förbund och föreningar tonar ned problematiken.

Studien avslöjar en situation där ansvaret för barns och ungdomars idrottskostnader är diffust och där åtgärder för att hantera kostnadsutvecklingen ofta läggs på externa aktörer. Detta riskerar att leda till att kostnaderna överförs till barn och ungdomar, vilket kan minska idrottens tillgänglighet för vissa grupper och därmed undergräva idrottsrörelsens mål och princip om ”allas rätt att vara med”.

Undersökningen bidrar till en ökad förståelse för barn- och ungdomsidrottens prislapp och skapar en grund för vidare diskussioner och uppföljande studier om ansvaret för den utveckling som sker. Den belyser behovet av att föreningar och förbund tar ett tydligare ansvar för kostnadsutvecklingen och varför detta är avgörande för att säkerställa idrottens tillgänglighet och att upprätthålla idrottsrörelsens mål och princip om ”allas rätt att vara med”.

Current policies for the preservation of historic buildings (archaeological or heritage sites) constitute a challenge for local governments in Jordan. Although the main goal of preservation is to build a connection between people and sites, people have lost their connection with historic sites due to current preservation strategies. The present study is the first to investigate how and to what extent outdoor spaces can be used to increase place attachment to heritage buildings for people in Jordan. It evaluates the applicability of using outdoor spaces as a new method for connecting people with historic buildings in Jordan. This will be achieved firstly by determining which aspects of attachment to heritage buildings are being evaluated and which characteristics of outdoor spaces are being investigated to promote that connection. To achieve this goal, this paper adopts a mixed-method approach. The first method is a questionnaire survey using 344 participants for quantitative analysis. The second is observation of human behavior using ArcMap 10.8.1 and Revit 2022 software tools for qualitative analysis. This study concludes with a framework for developing or designing successful outdoor areas around historic buildings. It provides a set of recommendations that lead to a better connection between people and heritage sites, better protection of the sites, and more visitors. It revealed how the presence of outdoor areas surrounding heritage sites including their features and services can improve people’s sense of place through increasing community participation in celebrations and important events in these outdoor heritage areas. Additionally, it explored the challenges these spaces are facing that limit their use, such as shade areas and additional space for big events. Therefore, this paper contributes a plan for developing existing outdoor areas surrounding heritage sites. The findings allow decision-makers to develop or design outdoor spaces around historic buildings to create successful places by increasing their effectiveness and reviving their role in preserving historic buildings.

The aim of the research is to study the effect of internet on the personality traits of the youth. It attempts to find an answer to the questions that: what is the function of internet in forming our behavior? Are they able to make changes in personality traits of youth in Iran? To answer these questions five hypotheses were developed which, using standard tests of neo personality traits, compare the emotional instability, openness, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, between the youth who use internet and those who don't use. This research is of descriptive type, and its study design is an ex-post facto (causal-comparative). The population includes all students of the Science and Research University. The size of the sample, which was selected using a relative stratified sampling method proportional to the population size, is 300 people according to Cochran formula. To collect data, one questionnaire was used: standard questionnaire of personality traits; also to analyze the data in two scopes of data, descriptive and inferential analyses with emphasis on the assumptions of statistical model T, two independent groups have attempted to analyze the data, the main results of which are as follows: All hypotheses used in this research other than openness were confirmed and also the relationship between the dependent variable of the research (emotional instability, extraversion, agreeableness and conscientiousness) and independent variable (internet) has been affirmed. The relationship of variables in openness was not significant and it has been confirmed that the two groups had the same openness.

People's relationship with specific locations isn't just about geography; it's deeply intimate and largely affects our lives, our view of ourselves, and where we belong. As a result, the link is so essential. It instills us with a sense of safety and permanence, helping to keep us in the moment, knowing where we're coming from. However, this kind of link isn't only emotional. It can also evolve into concrete steps, such as a desire to improve the community and a need to maintain it. Our connection to certain places goes beyond mere physical location; it integrates itself fiercely into our definitions of self and identity. This connection, known as place attachment, is essential for sever al causes. To start with, it gives us a feeling of security and stability, rooting us securely in the ground. The present paper is an attempt to explore the connection between individuals and their environment with respect to well-being and sense of belongingness. For this purpose, a self-constructed questionnaire was used for the collection of raw data amongst the girl students of 17 to 24 age group. The major findings indicate a strong preference for natural landscapes and the importance of green spaces for ensuring better wellbeing and sense of belongingness.

The topic of the article concerns the issue of place attachment and its determinants. An analysis of place attachment was performed in terms of place identity and place dependence (Williams, Vaske, 2003). Moreover, links between place attachment and selected geographical (size and type of place, geographical region), demographic (age, sex) and psychological (satisfaction with life) variables were investigated. The study group included 759 respondents: 398 women and 361 men, aged 18-83 years, residing in 74 places in the Silesian Province, a region in Poland: in 10 sub-regions in the Upper Silesian conurbation and outside the conurbation. In this article, we have tried to show that the phenomenological
approach can be a suitable method for analyzing religious experience in
the field of education. To show this, we have argued that the
phenomenological method, as a descriptive method from the first-
person perspective, allows a person to directly describe and analyze
his/her lived experience, and the analyst can use this lived experience to
analyze the meaning of the experience, giving the person the necessary
knowledge and understanding of the meaning of his/her religious
experience. Therefore, in the first part of this article, we have mentioned
some important features of the phenomenological method. Also, in this
article, we have shown that the holistic approach provides the
possibility for the phenomenological researcher to expose the target
person, i.e. pupil or student, to the description and phenomenological
analysis of his religious experience from different angles. In addition to
these two important points in this article, it should also be mentioned
that adopting a phenomenological approach in the analysis of religious
experience in education provides the researcher with the possibility of
opening his/her mind so that he/she can learn about different religious
beliefs without bias and prejudice and do research about them without
judging whether they are right or wrong. This issue can be one of the
strong points of such research, which in the field of religious education
gives the researcher and the researched people the possibility to share
their religious experiences in the field of education without bias and
prejudice.

Built Environment Education (BEE) plays an important role in urban sustainability as citizens who are more aware of the surrounding architectural heritage have better opportunities to develop a sense of place and place attachment. Themes and stories make the architectural fabric of a city more legible that is why urban walking tours are such a popular format for BEE initiatives. These experience-based educative events are originally constructed for visitors (mainly tourists) of a city to receive in-situ impressions of the built heritage during their visit. But in recent years, the new phenomenon of proximity tourism appeared, inviting locals to participate in walking tours to discover their own neighbourhood, rendering this tourist-focused activity into a BEE tool for adults. Urban walks have been used in architectural education at the university level for quite some time, and recently organisations focusing on BEE have adapted the format as well, which therefore can reach a wide range of audiences. This research presents the quantitative and geo-referenced analysis of 449 photos taken during the walking tours by participants and a qualitative content analysis of the photos. The results of a questionnaire completed by 119 students upon the end of their walking tour are presented and analysed to determine the effectiveness of this BEE methodology. Results show that the experience-based format of urban walking tours in the context of BEE can contribute to the forming of sense of place for participants, and therefore should be considered as an educational tool.

The Anthropocene is a proposed geological epoch that marks the significant impact of human activities on the Earth's ecosystems (Lewis, Maslin 2015). Humanity currently faces many interwoven challenges and traps arising from intricate interactions between humans and their environment. These challenges and traps, known as polycrisis in the Anthropocene, represent one of the greatest challenges for research across various scientific disciplines. This paper explores polycrisis in the Anthropocene as a critical research agenda for geography, discussing its conceptualization, importance, and possibilities for study from a geographical perspective. The concept of polycrisis has not been adequately addressed in the geographical literature. Geography offers a rich heritage through its various subdisciplines. This paper will discuss how these subdisciplines and other related disciplines could be integrated into the geographical study of polycrisis. This discussion will consider the ontological delineation of polycrisis within the context of geographical research. The main idea of this paper is that an ontologically highly complex and hybrid object of research such as polycrisis provides an opportunity for a shift from the subdisciplinary fragmentation of geography to the application of a postdisciplinary perspective. The main research motivation is to strengthen the social relevance of geography in the context of the quest for global sustainability.

With the theory of Moss and Dyck, this study discusses Diane Glancy's The Reason for Crows to understand the insinuations of sensuous geography. This study maintains how in the wake of out-of-place identity within Native American space, Glancy uses sensory experiences as material practices to counter a sense of out-of-placeness. Such multisensory experiences help her native characters locate themselves in both the textual and Native American space. This study explores Diane Glancy's The Reason for Crows not only to find out the reasons due to which the Native Americans develop an acute sense of out-of-placeness within Native American spaces but also the geographies of illness and disability to investigate how Native Americans create and contest their space and place.

The socio-economic situation of the town of Karlovo and the surrounding area after 1878 was difficult, and the prospects for economic development were uncertain. The new economic realities and free competition accelerated the process of decline of the old crafts and livelihoods, while the local authorities and the central government failed to support the local craft and textile industries. The transition from proto-industrial to factory production proved unsuccessful in the first decades after 1878, despite isolated successful initiatives. A significant, but not sufficiently studied factor hindering the development of Karlovo and the region during this period were natural disasters, especially water-related ones. This paper will examine the consequences of water-related natural disasters that were a significant barrier to the economic development of Karlovo in the early 20th century. As will be seen, these processes were not isolated only around the Balkan Mountain, but occurred throughout Thrace, north-central and southwestern Bulgaria. In 1905 and 1910, two major water-related natural disasters occurred, causing considerable damage to the population and the underdeveloped economy of the town and the region. The paper traces how and why such devastating consequences occurred, and what measures were taken by local and central government to solve the problem? Were they successful or did vested interests and local power struggles prevailed?

In November 2000 at the University of Liverpool, the former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Dr John Reid delivered a paper on the uneasiness of British and Irish communities in Northern Ireland. Neither Protestants nor Catholics feel entirely at home in the region. This chapter explores the construction of a sense of place for different political traditions in Northern Ireland. While tensions here are rooted in conflict between two different geographical contexts, I wish to query whether difficulties also stem from different understandings of the concept of culture and its relevance for the public sphere. Initially I review the ideologies of unionism and loyalism, nationalism and republicanism with reference to the dialogical character of these identities and the changes that have occurred in recent decades. I query the civic and cultural dichotomy with which these ideologies are aligned, arguing that they have gradually become more alike and have adopted patterns of cultural assertion from one another. Noting Reid's statement (2001, p. 8) that 'you will not make someone feel at ease in your community or in your political structure by waving a flag at them, whether it is a Union flag or a tricolour', I query the significance of culture for different types of 'imagined community' in Northern Ireland, suggesting that it is not the sole prerogative of nationalists. If this is the case, should the public sphere be culturally plural or neutral? Should politicians endeavour to achieve parity of representation for different cultures or should they strive towards neutrality? Is a culturally impartial public domain feasible and how does this impact on a sense of place? How can one reconcile the conflicting demands of unionists and nationalists, if indeed they are opposites and not simply variants of a single ideology?

Based on a study of Little Saigon, an ethnic enclave in Westminster, California, this paper examines the physical, social, symbolic and emotional signi¢cance of such places in the lives of immigrants. We focus on three speci¢c aspects of the ethnic enclave: architectural elements, everyday social interaction within the enclave, and public ritual events. We highlight how the built architectural environment and the immigrants' social, commercial, and ritual activities interact to create and sustain a sense of place, foster community identity, and structure social relations. We conclude that ethnic enclaves constitute an important aspect of an immigrant's place identity enabling him/her to simultaneously remain connected to the places left behind and yet appropriating and forging signi¢cant new place ties.

The link between regional development and cultural heritage has been at the center of theoretical discussions and practices in the field of preservation. Especially, varieties of practices and regional plans have been developed in different parts of the World such as Europe, Russia and South Africa in order to ensure regional development through cultural heritage. In this paper, it is accepted that a cultural landscape, as a sub-region of a particular region, is a relevant and meaningful unit that can contribute to the qualities of the region in terms of socio-cultural and economic aspects. In this context, the main goal of this paper is to develop a set of criteria that will act as a tool for identifying to which aspects of a cultural landscape has the potential to contribute regional development and to evaluate possible contributions of Ephesus and its cultural landscape to regional development. These criteria can be classified according to a framework implying a three-fold classification; improvements in the physical quality of the cultural landscape, economic dimension and socio-cultural dimension. As a result, this case indicates that cultural landscape has great potential to contribute to the social and economic development of a region. There is a great need to support community through tools such as awareness raising programmes, regional heritage planning, regional heritage institutions acting as regional agencies.

This paper draws on two years of fieldwork and interviews with Ms.  Amy Stelly and members of the Claiborne Ave Alliance that have been organizing to take down the Claiborne expressway from Tremé, New Orleans. It argues that Stelly's life, political praxis and theorizations of the neo-Bourbon political economy of Louisiana are an important geography of Black feminist praxis in the US South.

This essay examines a corpus of Italian horror films set in Venice between the 1960s and 1980s, proposing the critical category of hydro-horror: a subgenre in which the aquatic element, while not central to the narrative, emerges as a source of a pervasive sense of the uncanny through its presence in modern urban environments. The specificity of the Venetian lagoon, with its amphibious nature and history of socio-natural transformations, provides fertile ground for the development of a cinematic imaginary of the monstrous in which water becomes a narrative and visual device that problematizes the boundaries between natural and artificial, revealing usually hidden urban metabolic processes. The essay explores how these films utilize Venice's aquatic materiality to articulate cultural anxieties related to urban modernity, offering a critical perspective on the ontological complexity of an irreducibly hybrid environment.

In recent years, due to changes in people's lifestyles and the emergence of staying at home and remote work, individuals are forced to spend a significant amount of time at home. For example, the prevalence of contagious diseases such as COVID-19 has led to long-term remote learning in schools. However, this trend has not only resulted in a decrease in academic performance among learners, but has also caused psychological disturbances such as post-traumatic stress and stress due to virtual learning in students. In studies conducted on the causes of these consequences, the quarantine environment of individuals (residential environment) has played the most important role in the emergence of these consequences. Therefore, examining the relationship of individuals with the quarantine environment becomes twice as important. It is necessary to review all factors affecting students in the quarantine environment and consider the importance of the home environment for individuals by examining environmental indicators that affect the individual. Therefore, considering the importance of the impact of the home environment on individuals, the present research aimed to elucidate stress-inducing factors in the residential environment of quarantined students, as well as to identify prominent components of meaningful manifestation effective in reducing the stress of quarantined individuals in the residential environment. The current qualitative (exploratory) study was conducted using a descriptive phenomenological approach. In this method, information was gathered from reliable sources and semi-structured interviews with students in Region (3) of Isfahan city, who were selected based on purposive sampling criteria, and sampling continued until reaching saturation. The findings were analyzed using the Colaizzi analysis method with the assistance of ATLAS.ti software, and the data were categorized and described. The research findings include 3 main themes and 11 sub-themes with 57 pieces of evidence. The results indicate that in order to reduce students' stress caused by home quarantine due to the spread of a disease and virtual education, considering the long duration of quarantine, it is possible to reduce individual stress by improving the sense of place in the environment and creating different environmental layers in space, multi-layering the environment, and better managing the long duration of quarantine.

Purpose – The current education paradigm is often criticized for fostering human dependence and failing to reduce environmental impacts. This has led researchers to propose alternative approaches. One alternative approach, place-based education, integrates a specific location’s natural and social context into learning experiences. By deepening students’ connection to their surroundings, place-based environmental education aims to enhance students’ sense of interdependence with a place and their place attachment in cognitive and
affective dimensions. While widely practiced, its effectiveness remains largely unevaluated, particularly in the East Asian context. The gap hinders the development of impactful pedagogical approaches for educators.
Design/methodology/approach – The authors examine a river environmental education program located upstream of Taiwan’s capital, offering a valuable case study within the East Asian context. The program’s design is analyzed, and its impact on enhancing students’ place attachment is assessed through a pre- and post-survey approach.
Findings – The results indicate a substantial increase in students’ place attachment following program participation, particularly pronounced among children with limited prior experience with the river. Importantly,
this increase is comparable to or exceeds those observed in similar studies from other regions.
Originality/value – The considerable increase in place attachment observed in this program demonstrates its effectiveness in fostering environmental connections, particularly among children with limited prior experience. The magnitude of the increase might be partially attributable to the interdependent orientation of Taiwanese culture. This suggests that place-based education might yield

Urban landscapes are ever-evolving entities shaped by diverse needs, socio-cultural shifts, technological advancements, and urbanisation. However, modern urban design approaches have often overlooked the experiential qualities of space, treating urban space mostly as empty surfaces on which things can be arranged according to functional and economic needs. This has resulted in a widespread sentiment that distinctive places are being replaced by a monotonous, uniform, shallow, ordinary placeless flatscape, lacking intentional depth and providing possibilities only for mediocre experiences. The research roots its interest in how the built form supports everyday life, contributing to creating people-place relationships in this dynamic urban landscape. Because a successful urban environment not only enhances the quality of life for its inhabitants but also demonstrates resilience and adaptability to the constant social, environmental, and economic changes.
While the existing discourse has extensively explored the role of place attachment in shaping emotional connections to specific locales, there is a gap in understanding how the ordinariness of everyday experiences contributes to people-place relationships. This study aims to address this gap by examining how the small, often overlooked aspects of daily life influence individuals’ spatial experiences within urban environments to shape perceptions of place. These place associations reflect the deeper experiential relationships and meanings embedded in everyday urban landscapes. These seemingly mundane elements of the environment significantly influence our behaviour while contributing to human well-being.
After a thorough review of the literature, a tentative analytical framework was outlined to explore how meaning is attributed to places from a phenomenological perspective. This framework informed the empirical study, which examined individuals' relationships with their everyday environments. To gather comprehensive data, the study employed in-depth semi-structured interviews, supported by visual documentation in the form of photographs, videos, and, in some cases, mental maps created by respondents.
The four-dimensional model adopted in this research captures a broad spectrum of interactions between individuals and their environments through the lens of process, practice, place, and people. It emphasises subjective human experiences over the objective realities of city life and highlights the importance of place in people's daily lives. These multidimensional explorations have identified several key variables across individual dimensions, which collectively enhance our understanding of what kinds of urban environments foster exceptional quality of life. This study concludes that by taking care of the quotidian aspects, and by making the use of limited resources wisely we can create environments that nurture well-being.

Article Information Geographic "place" and spatial relations in the historiographic dimension are the places where social memory is fermented. It is quite difficult to understand how the collective memory was (formed) from where we are today. Pierre Nora's aphorism "There is no more memory" (2022: 19) strengthens the expression, with history replacing memory, and memory is remembered as history. Collective memories established by the time gaps between history and new memory form collective memory in the long run. The purpose of study within this context is to map the history/ruins and a new memory of Istanbul Galataport/Karaköy-Galata Port chronologically and to find the important breaking points of social memory through the distances lived in the "place". These breaks are the points where the social memory is built by the gap between the "place" and the "distance" between the spaces. The starting point of the study is the question of whether the place maintains its sustainability/unsustainability in social memory with history, new memory, or distance section. The study is based on the hypothesis that the "history/ruins" and "new memory" concepts and the resulting "distance" as a result of the historical chronological sections taken, give the breaking points of the social memory. The study uses two-stage procedure as a method: deductive exploratory case study was used in the first stage, and a visual ethnography method was used in the second stage. In the findings, the historical Karaköy-Galata Port, named Galataport with its new memory, did not provide a contextual change to the "place" due to the distances formed by the history and the new memory, and it was seen that the distance frame grew larger in each period and history became a subset element in this framework.

This unpublished paper is an experimental attempt to examine the relationships between displacement and place, and pursues the idea that displacement cannot be understood without some prior understanding of place. Displacement is usually understood in social sciences as forced, mostly violent conflict or development.  In this essay I proposes a broader definition of displacement from the perspective of place to include a range of experiences that can be voluntary as well as forced. Different types of forced displacement are summarised, including the permanent exile of international refugees, internal displacements, displacements because of environmental disasters and climate change, resource and urban development, solastalgia and homelessness.  Voluntary displacements are associated with international migration, transnational employment, expatriatism, churning, and tourism, all of which are chosen and all of which inform sense of place. The conclusion is that while forced displacement has to be understood in terms of how it breaks attachment to place, it is also the case that sense of place is increasingly informed by memories of displacements, whether forced or voluntary.

Communities of Musical Practice by Ailbhe Kenny provides an in-depth and invaluable insight into ‘situated’ collaborative music-making practices on the ground in Ireland. The central research question – ‘how are ‘communities of musical practice’ developed and sustained in practice?’ (p. 1) – is addressed through qualitative case study research in Ireland’s mid-west region and situated within a broader sociocultural theoretical and contextual framework concerning music education. The author analyses and interprets complex practices using a Community of Musical Practice (CoMP) framework, adapted from Lave and Wenger’s Community of Practice (CoP) model, in addition to drawing on the sociocultural theoretical perspectives of Bourdieu, Becker and de Certeau. Simon Johannin's debut novel, "L'Été des charognes," published in 2017, offers a vivid portrayal of life in La Fourrière, an isolated village located in the Vosges. This area falls within what the French sociologist Christophe Guilluy terms 'France périphérique,' which refers to rural regions plagued by poverty and a sense of neglect. Through the perspective of an adolescent narrator, Johannin depicts the village's harsh daily reality, emphasizing its pervasive violence and the filth that characterizes its landscape. The narrative is saturated with descriptions of unpleasant odors, particularly from the decomposing carcasses of farm animals awaiting disposal, which permeate the village and underscore its marginalization.

My study aims to highlight how Johannin valorizes often disparaged aspects of the French rural landscape. Rather than softening the harsh realities of these neglected spaces, Johannin transforms them into an aesthetic gesture. Unlike Édouard Louis's sociopolitical approach in "The End of Eddy," Johannin uses a literary and aesthetic lens, focusing on the sensory experience of reading. This study explores how Johannin's approach transcends the abject aspects of "peripheral France" by integrating them into a literary framework, thereby challenging conventional discourses on these marginalized areas.

By creating a sensory, olfactory landscape, Johannin establishes a depiction for La Fourrière, making its overlooked realities visible and significant. This process can be likened to an alchemy, echoing Baudelaire's poetic transformation of "boue" into "or." Ultimately, this study seeks to examine the symbolic significance of Johannin's representation of peripheral France, particularly through its most abject elements, and to reflect on the poetic possibilities of filth and the role of literature in transforming the abject into an object of aesthetic interest.

Through the lens of spatial studies expounded in human geography, this paper aims to investigate the dynamics of space and place in the metropolitan context of two twentieth-century novels set in contemporary Sydney titled Indelible Ink (2010) by Fiona McGregor and Five Bells (2011) by Gail Jones. The characters' interactions with city spaces and places will be studied to examine the effects of spatial experience on their lives. Inter-related notions of sense of place, place identity, and topophilia are analyzed in the light of theories expounded by thinkers including Yi-Fu Tuan and John Agnew. This is complemented by an examination of the impacts of landmarks as iconic public spaces on the characters employing ideas put forth by Christophe Den Tandt. One of the conclusions the paper reaches is that characters of both novels fail to establish or maintain stable bonds with places of their dwelling and cityspaces, as a result of which, their sense of place as well as their inner peace and security are disturbed. When place identity is undermined, they suffer from a sense of dislocatedness and placelessness.

Sense of place has long been used to explain the relationships between humans and places. Sense of place refers to various socio-cultural, emotional, and psychological meanings, values, and feelings humans may attribute to places, individually and as a community. Sense of place as an overarching concept that explains human–place relations arguably include the other place-based constructs of place attachment, place identity, place satisfaction, and place dependence. Sense of place is a dynamic concept that varies in time and space. Individuals may develop different senses of place at different stages of their lives and in various socio-cultural settings. Although the investigations and applications of sense of place are wide and interdisciplinary, environmental and social psychologists and human geographers have shown more interest in this concept as a topic of research and practice or a matter of concern.
