The study investigated the influence of parenting styles and peer pressure on social adjustment of in-school adolescents in Ibadan metropolis, Oyo state Nigeria.
The population of the study comprises students in senior secondary school one and two (SS1-SS2). The participant’s age ranged from 12 years to 18 years. 150 questionnaires were administered out of which 149 students participated and this amount to 98% of total respondents. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire consisting of Parenting Style Scale, Peer Pressure Scale and Social Adjustment Scale. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and Multiple Regression Statistics Method. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Three research instruments were used they are: Measurement of Parenting Style (MOPS) contained fifteen questions in total for the students to answer pertaining to their primary caregiver, Peer Pressure Scale (PPS) contained 10 questions and the popularity subscale contained 12 questions and Social Adjustment Scale (SAS) is a six items scale with responses anchored base on the four likert points.
The results revealed that there was significant relationship between the independent variables (Parenting Style and Peer Group Pressure) and the dependent variable (Social Adjustment) in the following order of magnitude: Parenting Style (r = 0.658; P < 0.05) and Peer Pressure (r = 0.760; P < 0.05). Similarly, the result also indicated that the two independent variables (Parenting Style and Peer Group Pressure) when pulled together have significant effect on Social Adjustment of in-school Adolescents in Ibadan Metropolis. The result shows that Peer Pressure made the most significant contribution to Social Adjustment of in-school Adolescents in Ibadan Metropolis. (β = 0.704) to the prediction follow by Parenting Styles (β = 0.136).
The findings of this research provide reasonable information that can be applied in counselling and social psychology to the better understanding of social adjustment of in-school adolescents considering the fact that a keen observation of what is happening in Nigeria today seems to indicate that social behaviour is on the increase among in-school adolescents despite the fact that the manifestation of anti-social behaviour could hinder their ability to concentrate in classroom teaching and learning situation and prevent them from developing required functional competencies for academic success. It is recommended that additional research examine the influence of peer group acceptance on the social adjustment of adolescents in the context of other potential influences, including the nature of the parent-children relationship, the academic culture in the home setting, and the support and encouragement that students receive from teachers at school.

Öz Macera terapisi deneyimle öğrenme yaklaşımından kaynak alan, danışanlara fiziksel görevlerin verildiği ve küçük gruplar şeklinde, genellikle terapistin ofisi dışında ve açık alanda yürütülen bir terapi yaklaşımdır. Günümüzde gittikçe tanınırlığı artan ma-cera terapisi, çok farklı örneklemlerde ve farklı değişkenlerle araştırılmaktadır. Ma-cera terapisi, açık alanda gerçekleştirilmesi ve macera etkinlikleri ve fiziksel aktivite-lere yer vermesi dolayısıyla özellikle çocuklar ve ergenlerle çalışıldığında anlamlı so-nuçlar alınmaktadır. Profesyonel uzmanlık gerektiren bir terapi yaklaşımı olan macera terapisinin kendisine bulunmaktadır. Türkiye'de de adından söz ettirmeye başlayan macera terapisi, araştırmacı ve uygulayıcıların dikkatini çekmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, okuyuculara macera terapisinin teori ve prensiplerine ilişkin genel bir bakış açısı sağlamaktır. Bu amaçla macera terapisinin kullandığı özgün tekniklerin yanı sıra oturum süreci ve içeriğine değinerek macera terapisinin teorik temelleri ve temel pren-siplerinden bahsedilmiştir. Adventure therapy is based on experiential learning approach covering physical tasks assigned to participants in small groups generally in outdoor settings. In addition to continuously increasing awareness of adventure therapy, it has a wide research area including different populations and variables. Adventure therapy yields significant results especially when it is conducted with children and adolescents as it includes adventure and physical outdoor activities. Adventure therapy, which is a therapeutic approach requiring professional expertise, has its own methods as well as different components from other therapeutic approaches. Adventure therapy is gaining popularity in Turkey and attracts the attention of practitioners and researchers. This paper is intended to provide an overview to the readers about theoretical basis and principles of adventure therapy by touching unique techniques used in adventure therapy as well as the session process and content. Information is given about the session process and the activities carried out. Finally, conclusion and recommendations for Turkey are discussed in the light of literature.

Logosynthesis is an Energy Psychology technique and approach that was developed by Willem Lammers. Although Logosynthesis draws from various schools of psychology - especially Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Transactional Analysis, as well as from the field of Energy Psychology it is essentially a trans-psychological technique or approach, as it is one of the few psychological approaches that explicitly integrate mind, body and spirit. Logosynthesis embodies elements of hypnotherapy, somatosensory focusing, cognitive therapy, depth psychology, energy therapy and ritual. It is meditative in the sense of facilitating an internally focused, intentional state, attending to one’s internal reality as determining experience ‐ which permits a dissolving of the energetic structure of the problem. Lakatos's (1978) philosophy of science is used as a guide for resolving published authors' differences of opinion about interpersonal forgiveness. We first review the ancient writings and current philosophical works regarding interpersonal forgiveness. With these ideas as a foundation we then critique six published papers on forgiveness, all of which have counseling implications. It is suggested that the works are not yet grounded in the foundational writings on forgiveness. The works, thus, may need some refinement in the area of definition, or proposed consequences for a forgiver, or in the processes used to bring about forgiveness in clients. A process model of interpersonal forgiveness then is described. Implications for the use of interpersonal forgiveness within counseling are drawn.

According to research, while moderately gifted students can often fit in the regular classrooms with differentiated instructions, pull-out programs, or acceleration options, highly gifted students do better when they are grouped with other intellectuallyadvanced peers in accordance with their strengths, interests, and background knowledge of a topic. Each of these students requires special attention and management strategies to develop better cognitive, social, emotional, and physical skills. Thanks to the grouping strategy, highly gifted students can study concepts at the appropriate pace, depth, and complexity so that these students feel valued and normal . In order to fully meet these students' needs, creating a school for highly, exceptionally, and profoundly gifted students would be a more beneficial plan compared to requiring them to stay within the regular classroom, accelerating, or grade skipping. Rogers pointed out that these students showed more academic growth by studying with other intellectual peers in separate classrooms. According to , identification, curriculum, program design, staff development, parental involvement assessment, and evaluation areas were essential for gifted program development. In accordance with the program development guidelines noted above, in this presentation, the process of developing and implementing a program for highly gifted students in Science, Math, Reading, and Social Studies will be provided based on an interview with Lynette Breedlove, Ph.D. who is the director of Advanced Academic Studies & Secondary Counseling at Spring Branch Independent School District in Houston, TX.

Psychological support is considered as a mediator of constructive personality transformations, which is a specially organized activity aimed at restoring and maintaining psychological health, professional self-realization, and deepening relations with a significant environment. It was determined that the results of the support are determined by activity, determination, responsibility, mutual tolerance of the parties to the accompanying interaction. The stages of support were analyzed: diagnostic-targeted, operational-instrumental, community-communicative, assessment and correction. Indicators of the effectiveness of support are determined: increase in the level of psychological well-being of the accompanying person, enhancement of community, dialogue, mutual tolerance of interaction between the recipient and agents; stimulating the involvement of the recipient in the joint work, his responsibility, empathy, optimism. Support strategies that can be used to obtain additional resources for restoring psychological health are disclosed: a strategy to overcome feelings of loneliness, alienation; a strategy for integrating traumatic experiences through new interpretations of what has been experienced; a strategy for testing new ways of engaging with the environment, a media strategy for improving self-regulation and self-efficacy.

The article introduces discourse analysis as a fruitful approach to psychotherapy change-process research. Extracts are presented from a successfully resolved, client-specified, problematic theme that was selected from a successful 8-session psychodynamic-interpersonal therapy of a female client presenting with a major depressive episode. The study offers a heuristic demonstrating (a) how resolution of the client's problem evolved from implications raised by the client's own description of her predicament and involved the therapist's legitimation of a morally defensible account of the client's actions and (b) how cultural meanings can be brought into the consulting room as intimately personal problems. The implications of studying therapeutic change as a discursive activity comprising the use and negotiation of sociocultural meanings are discussed.

This study tested a parent empowerment framework using a national sample of 9,982 parents from the Parent and Family Involvement Survey (National Center for Education Statistics, 2007) to investigate relationships between parent empowerment and children’s academic performance. A multinomial logistic regression demonstrated significant relationships between parents’ competence, self-determination, community belonging, community participation, and academic performance, which differentiate among parents based on racial/ethnic, language, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Findings highlight the importance of parent empowerment interventions that consider structural barriers in schools.

The drive for a theoretical integration of psychotherapy arises out of is dissatisfaction with the inadequacy of single systems/theories. It has been suggested that there is a need for a 'meta-theory' that provides a framework to integrate different psychotherapy theories in terms of some shared construct. The theoretical integration should take into account behaviour, emotion, cognition, and interpersonal factors. In addition, trans-theoretical considerations should include theory and data from neurology and psychiatry. Some different integrative 'frameworks' are noted, including Clarkson's 'Systemic Integrative Psychotherapy'. Some neuroscience based frameworks for integration are also mentioned. It is proposed that homeostasis could serve as a meta-theory that encapsulates principles in terms of which to 'systematically' integrate aspects of psychotherapy, including trans-theoretical dimensions.

In this review, supervision models used in the psychological counseling process are examined. In the literature, supervision models are classified under three headings; psychotherapy-based supervision models, developmental supervision models, and social-role models. Psychotherapy-based supervision models are divided into three subgroups. These are, Working Alliance Model, Behavior-Analytic Model and Cognitive Skills Model. Developmental supervision models are divided into four subgroups. These are, Integrated Development Model, Reflective Model, Conceptual Model and Developmental Comprehensive Supervision Model. Lastly, social-role models are divided into two subgroups. These are, Discrimination Model and Holloway’s System Approach Model. The mentioned models are discussed in the scope of their functionality in the supervision process, their basic philosophies and their stages.

Using social capital theory as a framework, the authors examined data from the Educational Longitudinal Study (ELS: 2002) to examine how student contact with high school counselors about college information and other college-related variables influence students’ college application rates. In addition to some college related variables, the number of school counselors, and student contact were significant predictors of college application rates.  Implications for school counselors and counselor training are included.

This article describes the technique, its distinguishing features and its application, as well as discussing broader aspects and implications of its hypothesized mechanisms. Three case examples are offered to illustrate both its application and its effectiveness.

This study is based on the analysis of narratives during counselling sessions of two clients facing the problem of stuttering. Though the two cases were quite different with regard to their demographic characteristics, but during counselling sessions, both the clients reported emotionally devastating and stressful home environment during childhood. Both the clients had reported undergoing childhood traumatic experiences of being abused and mistreated by their parents, especially by their father. The clients were clearly of the opinion that their father’s abusive behaviour infused in them a sense of acute fear, insecurity and mistrust regarding relationships. After initial few counselling sessions the clients narratives made it clear that their stuttering was more acute when they had to face their father.  These revelations suggested a strong relationship between traumatic childhood experiences /child abuse and stuttering. Parents are the key source of strength and confidence for a child. Parents are like the boat through which the child explores the vast ocean of life and develops his own personality. He/she looks towards his parents whenever he finds himself/herself in trouble perceived or real. But when the same source of strength and confidence becomes a source of fear or anxiety, it has a detrimental impact on not only the overall development of personality but also on the other cognitive capabilities including the fluency of speech.
The earlier studies in the field have primarily focused on the role of genetic factors in the aetiology of stuttering. On the basis of the analysis of narratives of the clients, we strongly believe that it will be misleading to lay overemphasis on genetic factors and to undermine the role of early childhood traumatic experiences in the aetiology of stuttering. Since chronic stress has been found to have a detrimental effect on various cognitive abilities, including the processing of speech and language, it has been argued that stress generated by early childhood traumatic experiences plays a key role in aetiology of stuttering. The effectiveness of CBT in significantly minimizing the problem of stuttering is indicative of the role of psychological factors.

It has been determined the specifics of the socio-psychological rehabilitation of war-injured personality in comparison with medical, social, and psychological rehabilitation. It is shown that socio-psychological influences are not strictly aimed only at the restoration of health, or of the lost mental functions, or at the social status returning. A wide field of socio-psychological interventions covers the activating of the person's life-designing, the restoring of the independent transformations ability, which involves projecting of the future, approbation, correction of these projects and their realization in various spheres of life.
Socio-psychological technologies of personality’s rehabilitation are defined as the complex targeted impacts which provide the preservation and restoration of personal integrity, balance, self-regulation ability, self-efficacy, communicative competence, and generation of vital senses activating. The technologies are presented as a set of interventions deployed in a 4-vector personal-instrumental-spatial-temporal plane. There is analyzed the process of the socio-psychological restoration which consists of three stages: preparatory, basic, and supporting one.
There are defined the technologies that are expedient to use at the preparatory stage of socio-psychological rehabilitation: these are the technology of self-change motivation enhancing, the technology of effective motivators constructing, and the technology of blind fields of attention activating. There are tested the technologies which ensure the successful passing of the basic stage: these are the technology of the future through life choices designing, the technology of updated projects by means of life tasks setting approbation, and the technology of the set tasks realization with the help of more and more successful practicing. There are proposed the technologies on which the supporting stage (which also acts as the prophylactic one) should be based: these are the technology of reinterpretation and integration of traumatic memories into the personality’s general experience, the technology of developing of the new attitude to stress as to resource, and the technology of mediated influence on the personality through the more ecological environment of life organization.

Therapy can be confusing: two people converse in a private room, one in distress, the other described as a helpful expert. At least one of the two is likely to express thoughts and feelings usually kept secret. In other circumstances, the exchange of such intimacies may herald a more physical relationship. For therapists, however, the professional relationship explicitly precludes such contact. The BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy,1 for example, requires that practitioners must not abuse their client’s trust in order to gain sexual, emotional, financial, or any other kind of personal advantage. Sexual relations with clients are prohibited, along with sexualised behaviour.

While psychotherapists and counsellors generally acknowledge that sexual attraction is a common and often ordinary human response to another, they also recognise that acting on such feelings in therapy will quickly become problematic. The early psychoanalytic community had to confront and respond to such instances as Jung’s relationship with Sabina Spielrein.2 Rosie Alexander’s3 description of the times she sat on her therapist’s knee and felt his erection, elicits a mixture of emotions in the reader, not least shock, and the narrative is saturated with a sense of betrayal.

There have been several types of research investigating boundary breaches and sexual boundary violations.4 In spite of these, however, there is little certainty about how common sexual boundary violations are, as the sources of information about them (confession, client reporting, complaints to organisations, and knowledge of colleagues’ conduct) are all vulnerable to error. Further studies have attempted to identify characteristics of transgressing therapists and the factors that contribute to such events (see Moggi et al5 for an example), and to understand the effects on clients who have experienced therapist-client sex.6 If sexual feelings are ubiquitous and sexual attraction a real possibility in the context of the therapy relationship, how are these managed in therapy? Complaints about sexual boundary violations form a small proportion of complaints about therapists and health professionals.4, 7, 8 Is it the prospect of opprobrium from colleagues or the threat of sanctions from regulatory agencies that contains the relationship within professional boundaries? Do reported violations represent only a small proportion of actual sexual boundary violations? .......

Aim: To identify therapists’ views on sexual boundaries and the strategies they employ to manage them in therapeutic practice. Method: In-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with a sample of 13 accredited, experienced practitioners of psychotherapy or counselling. A grounded theory approach, informed by principles from Free Association Narrative methodology, was employed, in which team members used debriefing sessions for extending depth of understanding of the interviews. Findings: There is consensus about boundaries at the extremes, but variability about fantasy, flirtation and touch. A core process was generated from accounts of successful management of sexual attraction. We identified four problematic ways of reacting to boundary pressure, each with potential to harm clients and therapy. Discussion: A participant-observer stance was conceptualised as essential for managing threats to boundaries, consistent with the empathic stance. Minor boundary crossings were viewed by interviewees as both potential precursors of more serious transgressions, and as opportunities for understanding the client's difficulties. Implications for practice: These span training, accrediting organisations, supervision and therapy practice.

The wellbeing and nurture of children is a paramount concern for every country, culture, and community. Internationally, notable numbers of children undergo maltreatment, leading to significant lifelong implications (WHO 2016).

In UAE, child welfare, safety, and protection have been evidently intensifying in many spheres - political, social and cultural. Legalism, bureaucracy, and procedures are recognized as key drivers of child protection systems. Governments at both federal and local levels have developed policy frameworks for child protection and safety as part of community-based change initiatives.

Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has been closely monitoring the safety and well-being of children as part of its evaluation of the schools. However, policy and research on child maltreatment are under-researched and under-conceptualized remains in its infancy.

This article will discuss how two theoretical frameworks can be useful in the analysis of conflict situations in social work practice. By viewing situations from the perspective of competing and differing values, social workers are able to come to respect the positions of those with whom they are in conflict. The respect that emanates from being empathic and validating towards another's values is crucial for negotiating resolution to difficult conflict situations.

The tasks of the work were to develop methodological principles for restoring the psychological health of the individual, to work out the technologies of social and psychological rehabilitation and to determine the resource modalities that increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation influences. It was used the method for the phenomenological analysis of individual and group counseling interventions and interviews, in-depth and contextual interviews, case studies. As a result of the study, the individual readiness to creative construct one’s own life is defined as the main condition for the restoration of psychological health. The rehabilitation process is considered as a means of recovery, aimed at enhancing life creativity. It is shown that the effectiveness of restoration is ensured by taking into account the indicators, criteria, vectors, meaningful targets of rehabilitation interventions, their phased specification, the possibilities of targeted inclusion of communities in the systemic support of their members, team approach of different specialists. The ways of attracting problem youth to restoration (readiness to orient themselves on the warrior-colleague positive experience, support of the veteran and religious community) and measures to prevent recurrence of asocial behavior are determined. There was an emphasis on the acute experience of losses by combatants and internally displaced persons, as well as a state of alienation in accordance to society, other people, and work by demobilized people. Technologies of restoring self-efficacy and life-continuity of the individual, its constructive dialogue with the world, life, self, sense are tested. There are determined the following resource modalities, which promote the restoration of individual psychological health:  basic (increasing the viability of the individual); instrumental (use of mobile applications as psychological support) and buffer (participation in the playback-action, providing group recovery). The obtained results can be used to increase the social-adaptive capacity of a person, the ability to recover from traumatism. The direction of further research is the socio-psychological support of the individual in the transition from war to peace. The work practical value is to develop the principles of interagency interaction optimizing at the state and interdisciplinary level, to develop the ways of activities of communities and organizations coordinating a comprehensive approach to rehabilitation of the injured persons. The investigation social consequences are determined by the goals of rehabilitation effects, phases, stages, forms, technologies and techniques of rehabilitation; self-help directions, and practice to promote post-traumatic growth is defined. The value of work is to implement an integrated approach to social and psychological rehabilitation of the victims.

This article explores the congruence between poetry therapy and the strengths perspective of social work. It demonstrates the ways in which poetry therapy is consistent with the strengths perspective and discusses methods for its utilization in direct practice settings. Case examples are provided to help the practitioner learn how to utilize poetry therapy with clients from diverse backgrounds. As a tool in strengths-based practice, poetry and poetry therapy can help empower clients and help to focus practitioners on clients' capacities and resilencies. This article seeks to expand upon the growing literature of strengths-based social work, addressing how the theory can be applied to clinical practice situations. This study analyzed the effect of a career decision-making program on high school students' decision-making difficulties. In this study, the placebo control group with pretest, posttest and follow-up test experimental design has been used.  Students have participated in experimental group (female:8, male:7) and placebo control group (female:7; male:8). These students have been selected randomly among 400 students from two different high schools in Turkey. Career decision-making difficulties have been measured by the scale of Career Decision-making Difficulties Questionnaire (CDDQ) which was originally developed by Gati and Saka and adapted to Turkish adolescents by Bacanli. Covariance analyses have been conducted to examine possible differences in students’ responses before and after the career decision-making guidance program. All levels of career decision-making difficulties of the experimental group have significantly decreased in comparison to those of the placebo control group. Furthermore, career decision-making program was applied to the experimental group for 11 weeks after treatment and, in general, the decrease in the levels of difficulty still existed. However, the decrease in the external conflicts has not continued. These findings indicate that it is effective on decreasing the career decision-making difficulties of the 9th grade students. These findings and suggestions with regard to the scientific study on the field of career counseling and guidance are offered.
