Process and Control in Chemical Engineering

Ethanolamines are raw materials widely used in industry. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide absorption and the production of materials such as paint, rubber, adhesive, detergent, soap are the areas where ethanolamines are frequently used. With the formation of new industrial areas, the demand for ethanolamine is increasing every year.
Our design project aimed to produce mono-, di-, tri-ethanolamine of high purity and quality. In aqueous environment, ethanolamines are obtained by the serial reactions carried out by feeding ammonia and ethylene oxide into the plug flow reactor. This process runs on a continuous model. Compared with other alternatives, the selected process has more sensitivity to the environment. Production planning Turkey's industrial structure has been expected to establish a complex system. For this reason, it was decided to establish the facility in İzmir, Aliağa Industrial Zone. We take into account when determining the quality of our process is the most important factor in Turkey's foreign trade deficit ethanolamine field. Accordingly, our annual production capacity has been determined as 4440 tons.
Mass, energy and utility requirements values and some calculations were made using Chemcad® simulation software. The process flow chart and block diagram were drawn using Microsoft Visio 2013, and the process control charts of the equipment were drawn using Draw.io. Capcost 2012 was used in the economic analysis. Other calculations were made by manually.

A strategy for adaptive control and energetic optimization of aerobic fermentors was implemented, with both air flow and agitation speed as manipulated variables. This strategy is separable in its components: control, optimization, estimation. We optimized parameter’s estimation (from the usual KLa correlation) using sinusoidal excitation of air flow and agitation speed. We have implemented parameter’s estimation trough recursive least squares algorithm with forgetting factor. We carried separate essays on control, optimization and estimation algorithms. We carried our essays using an original computational simulation environment, with noise and delay generating facilities for data sampling and filtering.

Our results show the convergence and robustness of the estimation algorithm used, improved with use of both forgetting factor and KLa dead-band facilities. Control algorithm used in our work compares favorably with PID using the integrated area criteria for deviation between oxygen molarity and critical molarity (set point). Optimization algorithm clearly reduces energetic consumption, respecting critical molarity. Integration of control, optimization and adaptive algorithms was implemented, but future work is needed for stability. Methods were defined and implemented for stability improvement. We have implemented data acquisition and computer manipulation of air flow and agitation speed for actual fermentors.

In general, the feedback control algorithm for a process designed to handle small perturbation that may arise under normal operating condition but can not accommodate any abnormal behavior due to fault. Thus the automated maintenance or early detection of worn equipment is becoming a critical issue. Using color video observation in conjunction with careful thickness calibration with laser interferometry it is possible to map the thickness profile evolution with time for fluid flowing radially outward on a rotating silicon wafer during spin coating. During the latest stages of a transparent fluid thinning on a spinning substrate, the fluid reaches thickness values such that interference effects cause the film to display distinct colors that correlate directly to thickness. These colors cycle through the visible spectrum in a predictable and meaningful way. The present work demonstrates that these colors can be easily captured using standard video equipment and that the corresponding thickness values can be calibrated using simultaneous normal-incidence laser interferometry at the center of the substrate. The combination of these two techniques allows for observation of the spinning wafer to understand fluid thickness profile evolution without being forced to know the exact illumination conditions or refractive index dispersion relationship for the fluid being examined. This technique provides meaningful time-resolved thickness profiles for fluids in the later stage of spin deposition and has potentially wider application in engineering process control and coating characterization.
