Those who have somehow reconciled with the mythologised history of ancient India will surely be surprised by the continuing trend of myth-making even in modern times.
Partition of India has largely been covered by thick layers of deliberate untruths to construct communal narratives
demonising Muslims.
Not many people know that a majority of Muslims did not approve of the idea and large numbers of them actually opposed it. These facts, however, remain largely unexplored except in a few scholarly treatises. The present book by a noted scholar and a progressive activist-thinker Shamsul Islam, devoted to exposing these truths to the larger public,
is not only a welcome contribution but also a timely one, given that Hindutva forces are falsifying our history with a
fascist zeal.

Fear is one of the primary emotions and state of psychological being which affects the
physical existence of human being. Literature dealing with holocaust, partition or physical
violence also highlights the dimension of fear. Victims are always under the siege of
psychological trauma that devastates their human existence. It leads to various emotional and
psychological disorders in the victim’s life.
The present paper traces the portrayal of fear and its remembrance as depicted in
Anita Rau Badami’s novel “Can You Hear the Night Bird Call?” It deals with such
manifestation of fear that follows the protagonist Nimmo through out life like a shadow of
the past. The fear manifests itself into the ghost from the past which is realized in her present
life.

In this paper we shall explore the move from localised to politicised identities in Bengali society and evidence how religious affiliation became a central consideration within this shift. The growth of communalism, we shall argue, has much to do with the colonial strategy of establishing separate electoral systems for Hindus and Muslims, cementing the separation between these religious groupings. Our critical interest centres around the Partition of Bengal, and we shall employ memoirs and literary texts, written in Bengali and translated into English, so as to elucidate upon the complexities of the Hindu/Muslim relationship. We shall argue that the unresolved issues of Partition still cast their shadow on contemporary India, and shall draw connections between past and present manipulations of religious identities for expedient political ends. Resumen En este artículo estudiaremos el cambio de identidad local a identidad nacional en la sociedad bengalí y cómo la religión tuvo un papel central en el mismo. El auge del sectarismo religioso estuvo relacionado con la estrategia de las autoridades coloniales de crear colegios electorales distintos para musulmanes e hindúes, lo que claramente abrió una brecha insalvable entre ambas comunidades. Para conocer mejor la complejidad de las relaciones sociorreligiosas, nos centraremos en los efectos de la Partición en Bengala y al efecto recurriremos a memorias y textos literarios escritos en bengalí y traducidos a inglés. Inferimos que la Partición dejó irresoluta una serie de problemas que afectan a India en la actualidad, debido a la manipu-lación de la identidad religiosa con fines políticos, en el pasado tanto como en el presente. Treatises on the 1947 Indian Partition have been mostly centred on the vehemence of riots and the travails of refugees, but the present article chooses to take a revisionist line and focus on the humane amidst this overwhelming violence and misery. It explores episodes of compassion when ordinary men and women admirably extended help to members of the ‘Other’ community during their moments of dire need. Though not numerous, these instances where they showed exemplary courage in rising beyond the boundaries of their religious affiliation constitute a significant feature in Partition Studies and deserve to be suitably highlighted. Such incidents also gain immense significance in the light of sectarian hostility repeatedly rearing its ugly head across the Indian subcontinent, even in the post-independence period, making minority groups feel vulnerable. Literary and historical accounts based on the theme of inter-religious amity amidst those vicious times of the Partition have the potential to play an ameliorative role in the current scenario by bridging the gulf between different communal factions and foregrounding essential human principles of peace and harmony.

Millions of people were forced to migrate after the Partition of the Indian subcontinent. The massive human displacement enabled the creation of new ethnic identities. This was, especially, pronounced for migrant Muslims in Pakistan who had to settle there and restart their lives. Although initially, they were regarded as religious refugees who had sacrificed everything for Pakistan, soon they were treated as unwanted outsiders. Ethnic tensions, between natives and migrants, transformed into open political hostilities and Karachi, where several migrants had shifted, would witness violent riots throughout the following decades. These circumstances subvert the idea of Pakistan as a homeland for the post-Partition Muslim migrants who could not feel secure there. It forced them to organize themselves as a new distinct ethnic group called the ‘Muhajir.’ Intizar Husain’s The Sea Lies Ahead and Kamila Shamsie’s Kartography facilitate a deeper understanding of the dynamics that affected these migrants and how they, eventually, were able to situate themselves in Pakistan. This paper seeks to study these dynamics, and it argues that three stages – becoming, unbecoming and finally, re-becoming – were involved in the transformation of ‘Muhajirs’ from a group of heterogeneous migrants to a distinct and homogeneous ethnic group in Pakistan.

The Indian short story is not merely a derivative of the Western genre, but owes much to the great story-telling tradition of Indian antiquity. The mythical and legendary tales as well as folktales have provided a fertile soil for the modern Indian short story to germinate. Beginning towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Indian short story flourished in the twentieth century. It became evident by the end of the past century that the canon is attuned to Indian landscape whose heterogeneous people and their diverse experiences it reflects so faithfully. The Indian short story as a distinct genre resembles a “multicoloured glass” scattering myriad hues which is analogous to the diversity of our country itself. The variegated and unbeaten genre righteously deserves critical attention which it has been deprived of.

With twenty-seven scholarly articles by academics, professors and researchers, the present critical volume is a tribute to an affluent but neglected genre of Indian literature. In accord with the genre itself, the scope of the book allows for such diversity as the classic writers like Tagore and Manto; the feminist writers like Ismat Chughtai, Kamala Das, Shashi Deshpande and Indira Goswami; the dalit writers like Bama and Ajay Navaria; the diaspora writers like Bharati Mukherjee and Jhumpa Lahiri. The reworking of myth by Mahasweta Devi, the nature lore of Ruskin Bond, the saga of exile by the Kashmiri Pandits, the satire of Hari Shankar Parsai, the macabre tales of Satyajit Ray, the problematics of identity in Manoj Das and memory in Temsula Ao—all are taken into consideration within the structure of a single volume to make this a stimulating overview for students and scholars of Indian literature.

Diese Diplomarbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem Thema der Repräsentation weiblicher Rollenbilder zur Zeit der Teilung von Indien und Pakistan in Romanen südasiatischer Autorinnen. Nachdem Frauen anfangs fast komplett aus der Geschichtschreibung der indisch/pakistanischen Unabhängigkeit ausgeklammert wurden, wurde ihnen später vor allem die Rolle des Opfers von körperlicher Gewalt zugeschrieben. Erst allmählich wird bekannt, dass Frauen auch eine Vielzahl anderer Erfahrungen hatten zu dieser Zeit. Da konventionelle Geschichtsschreibung meist hegemonial männlich besetzt ist, wird die weibliche Sicht oft unterdrückt. Deshalb wird in dieser Diplomarbeit auf fiktionale Romane zurückgegriffen. Throughout the Indian Independence Struggle, a movement that was aimed at creating a collective identity, individual identities were trapped in the cross-fire of conflict. This paper attempts to study the perpetual flux in the social, religious and national identities of an individual, an occurrence which was most noticeable as an aftermath of the Partition of 1947. In addition, the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, an event that redefined the entire human history, will be studied from the point of view of memory and literature, with the intention to establish a connection between trauma and identity.
              This paper applies the framework of memory studies, as found in Astrid Erll’s publication ‘Memory In Culture’, to the following texts of wide-renown: ‘A Train to Pakistan’, ‘Tamas’ ,‘Those Who Crawled’ and ‘The Selected Short stories of Saadat Hasan Manto’. The motive behind examining narrative memories through Literature can be attributed to the shared heuristic triads that can be found amongst them, such as: Author/Reader and Revival. Such an examination also makes it possible to distinguish between “prosthetic memory” and “transgenerational memory”, while also providing us with a marked demarcation between the concepts of the “narrating I” and the “experiencing I”. This faculty equips us to fully understand the conflict in identity. In addition, as a means of investigating the relationship between trauma and identity, the paper applies the concept of “literary afterlives”, which propagates the re-reading, re-writing and re-mediating of identity, through the amalgamation of history, memory and literature.

FILLING IN THE KNOWLEDGE GAPS (Review of Muslims Against Partition in The Statesman by Moinuddin Ahmad)
Religious minorities in many post-colonial states have been subjected to " othering " while being blamed for the socio-political muddle experienced by the majority community. The circumstances under which these states got rid of their colonisers are remembered for sheer unrest and bloodshed that resulted in the remapping and reshaping of their territories. The Partition of India left behind images and memories of violence borne by both Hindus and Muslims and with the creation of Pakistan, Muslims in India were held solely responsible for dividing one-fifth of humanity into two separate dominions. Of course, a large section of Muslims desired to live in a separate country, but at the other end of the spectrum there was a considerable number of them who rejected the idea of a state derived from religious nationalism. Muslims who chose to stay back in India suffered a two-way setback. While mourning the absence of loved ones who had left for Pakistan, some of their Indian compatriots accused them of nurturing extraterritorial loyalty. For the majority groups, they have always remained " Pakistanis " and their neighbourhoods " mini-Pakistans ". The carving out of Pakistan from the northwest and eastern part of undivided India and making it a Muslim majority country was undeniably sought by a section of the erstwhile Muslim leadership led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. But historians have noted the strong opposition by Muslims who opposed the legitimacy and raison d'être of Pakistan. Who were these Muslims and why were they opposing the Partition? To what extent did they succeed in convincing their community members to stay back in India? What were their relations with the erstwhile Hindu leaders? Should they be called “nationalist” or patriotic Muslims? Shamsul Islam has made a sincere effort to find answers to these questions in this book.

Under review book, is a product of serious and painstaking research by Shamsul Islam on the history of criminal conspiracy hatched by the British Government of India to break the backbone of the Indian nation since they defeated India's First War of Independence, 1857-1859, by surreptitiously injecting the poison of Hindu-Muslim religious divide and of how India's political leaders gradually fell prey to the trap, and of how, anticipating a huge carnage if the evil design of the rulers along with their stooge elites is realised, a small yet expanding group of Muslims under the leadership of Allah Bakhsh of Sind province with his Ittehad Party and Azad Muslim Organisation stood as a stumbling block against the evil design of the Muslim League during early 1940s for which he was done to death by the conspirators in order to facilitate Partition to meet their narrow ends. Reading the book it will appear that all political parties, Congress and Muslim League, Hindu Mahasabha, RSS and their equally communal Muslim counterparts and the contemporary political leaders of all hues were equally responsible for the Partition leading to riots, carnage, mutilation and rape etc on an unprecedented scale killing about ten million Indians and maiming and injuring other three to four million innocent Indians plus affecting properties worth tens of millions in terms of Indian Rupees which had high values in the World War-II international currency.
The author has splendidly unearthed and restored the spirit of the patriotic Muslims, their resolve to stay united with the Hindus and their agonies and sadness in the face of the superimposed Partition. When Allah Bakhsh's dream of a United India is more severely facing threat today than ever before, a reading of this book is highly recommended. The book has indeed appeared before the people as a great solace in the midst of the vicious atmosphere of communal suspicion, now prevailing in the country.
