Performance Philosophy

This introductory chapter outlines theatricality and performativity by way of their tensions and paradoxes – between seeing and doing, novelty and normativity – and argues for a more perspectival approach with notions of ‘texture,’ derived from anthropologist Tim Ingold and philosopher Stephen Pepper. After a section on ‘metaphor,’ those of texture and weaving are further elaborated in three extensive segments, beginning from their prior usage in dramaturgy (Eugenio Barba) and philosophy (feminism, Pepper, ecology). The third and most important section introduces Ingold’s meshwork as a key figure of plural performative becoming: the interweaving of lines, as opposed to the network as a key figure of theatrical detachment or abstraction – the connecting of points or objects into which the meshwork is simplified when we optically ‘zoom out’ from its haptic engagement. In the end, the ensuing chapters are introduced, themselves addressed as specific ‘threads’ within the book’s overall texture.

By asking if "performance philosophy" would be per se pragmatist, I intend to interrogate performance philosophy's specificities through three perspectives. At first, I will show the formal similarities between James' pragmatism as a philosophical method and contemporary theatre as a scenic practice. Secondly, I will examine how and at which conditions pragmatism and contemporary theatre could be connected in a way that allows common experiences without any territorial confusion. Thirdly and finally, I will experience the validity of this connection through one problem which is common to contemporary philosophy and theatre: the way we define knowledge and its subject, and the eventuality to construct other modalities of these main modern categories.

Emerging only in the 1980s, the complex assemblage of critical Disability studies and theatre studies is still a developing field. There are not enough scholars doing this work, and, with accessible performances only recently becoming standard across international theatre communities, it is unsurprising that there is not much written about performers with intellectual Disabilities. Tony McCaffrey provides close readings of several key case studies in Incapacity and Theatricality to challenge fundamental performance frameworks and principles, including aesthetics, semiotics, and mimesis, through the lens of critical Disability theory. With prose that gently questions the construction , representation, and inclusion of intellectually Disabled artists , McCaffrey suggests that theatre incapacitates such acts of public discourse but yet renders those acts more intense, more open to a range of different modalities of perception and sensing (a redistribution of the sensible) and reveals in the incapacitation or deconstruction of the customary social framing of these acts new and different ways of thinking, acting, and doing. (13-14) Especially integral to critical Disability studies and theatre studies is McCaffrey's assertion that theatre with Disabled performers neither has to be a learning experience for the audience nor does it have to assume the audience is non-Disabled. Rather, theatre with Disabled performers provides an opportunity for dialogue between audience and performer that offers more than reflection: it maintains the potential to challenge and reframe how intellectually Disabled people are perceived and treated off the stage.

The ubiquity of "crisis" and its sheer pervasiveness as a description of the contemporary world means that we do not so much write about crisis as much as we write from crisis. What type of thought is possible within crisis? If crisis extends to thought itself, insofar as we find ourselves in a crisis of thought (i.e., the crisis of not being able to think beyond the crisis of thought), then what kind of thinking is possible anymore? These are the questions raised by this special issue of Performance Philosophy, introduced here by the issue's co-editors.

The notion of the 'philosophy of x', which has recently tended to become part of many subjects, from music to management, tends to obscure a range of important issues. The idea behind it seems to be that, by designating one's reflections on a subject as the 'philosophy' of whatever it is one is reflecting about, one achieves some kind of higher insight. Such an approach arguably grants too much to a subject whose main manifestation is actually endless disagreement on fundamental issues. This chapter locates the practice-inspired approach to rhythm of choreographer and movement-thinker Rudolf Laban (1879-1958) in the wider context of critical theory focusing on rhythm and rhyth-manalysis. In doing so, its aim is both to add a signifi cant and overlooked voice to the ongoing debate on rhythm which has unfolded in Western thought, and to argue for the value of a practitioner's insight into this prominently if not exclusively theoretical arena. Laban's attempts to defi ne, analyse and understand rhythm are here discussed in relation to his artistic output and his philosophy through an exploration and analysis of unpublished manuscripts and drawings held at the National Resource Centre for Dance at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom. Anticipating what Henri Lefebvre famously argued in Rhythm-analysis (2004), rhythm is for Laban at the same time a quantifi able phenomenon (Takt) unfolding in space and a qualitative variable (rhythm itself), suggestive of what Lefebvre would later describe as 'what is least rational in human being: the lived, the carnal, the body' (9). Laban studied rhythm's intensities in his 'Effort theory' in English factories in the postwar period. This work resonates with but at the same time differs from Taylor's project of time-motion studies, in that rhythm plays the central role of resisting the impact of machine work on individual workers. Rhythm's effects on space and its impact on the dynamics of the moving body are also explored by Laban in his Choreutic theory, of which several models in the form of sketches and drawings are discussed in this chapter. In order to understand and reconcile the inner (Effort) and outer (Choreutics) study of rhythm, Laban, later in life, relied on topological structures such as knots and Mobius strips to devise his theories, something that resonates with the work of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, Jacques Lacan and Michel Serres.

La présente publication s'attache à saisir la diversité de la syncope dans les arts contemporains. Elle assemble des écrits, en langue française et anglaise, de théoriciens et d'artistes venant rythmer et élargir la réflexion lancée lors de la journée d'études, La Syncope, expériences du ravissement qui s'est tenue à l'Université d'Amiens le 17 mars 2016. Cette dernière était associée à une exposition éponyme au fracpicardie composée également d'oeuvres de la fondation Francès de Senlis. Outre l'équivalence de son et de sens en français et en anglais, la syncope, du grec sún « avec » et de koptô « je coupe », contient une tension antithétique qui a retenu notre attention. Ses trois expressions, physiologique, linguistique et rythmique se superposent et se mêlent parfois au sein d'une même oeuvre. Nous avons pensé l'articulation de la publication comme une confrontation entre expériences et allégories de la syncope. Déplacée en dehors du simple acte de sa représentation vers d'autres enjeux esthétiques et politiques, la syncope devient méthode qui interroge le hors-soi, hors-lieu, hors-temps. Échappées et volte-face qu'il est possible d'interpréter en termes de dé-production et d'utopie, de basculement vers une syncopolitique.

Through Interdisciplinary-Aesthetics, an argument is made utilizing an Atraudian/Deleuzian conception of the "Body Without Organs"  to emphasize the phenomenological value of live performance.The argument is progressed in theory and practice through use of the argumentative framework as a performance analysis for Experimental Metal band "The Body."

This article begins by examining the phenomenon of the deus ex machina in the modern theatre, in particular in Brecht's and Hauptmann's Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera, 1928). The transformations of this work into the film directed by Pabst (1931), The Treepenny Lawsuit: A Sociological Experiment (1931) where Brecht documented the trial against the company producing the film as well as the Threepenny Novel (1934) and Benjamin's short essay relating to the novel are also discussed with regard to their relations to the supernatural. In the second part of the article I contextualize this post-Nietzschean confrontation with the " supernatural " through Walter Benjamin's interpretation of plumpes Denken (crude thinking) based on Brecht's use of this expression in his adaptation of the same materials from the drama in the Threepenny Novel. My overall aim is to present a specific case-history of an issue that is central to the work and thinking of both Brecht and Benjamin, the materialization of ideas, in particular in this case of the supernatural, which on the one hand points at a potential utopia while on the other criticizes and limits this redemptive possibility by developing a dialectics based on the materialization of ideas.

This is a transcript of an unpublished talk presented in Frankfurt in November 2015. The paper draws from the principles of François Laruelle's non-standard philosophy to develop a critique of recent philosophies of theatre, both analytic and continental.

In this article I reinterpret Plato’s allegory of the cave as dramatizing democracy’s dependency on slave labor. Doing so, I argue that Plato allegorizes not the birth of the philosopher, as in the dominant readings of the allegory, but of the militant intellectual, one invested in the axiom of equality and the problem of emancipation. Equality, emancipation, intellectual militancy, and the meaning of Plato’s dramatic allegories are the main attributes of Alain Badiou’s and Jacques Rancière’s long investments in Plato’s Socratic plays, which explains why they are my main interlocutors in this article. However, in this article I argue that a decolonial interpretation of the allegory shows ways in which Rancière and Badiou’s interpretations of Plato ultimately undermine their own commitments to the axiom of equality by radicalizing the axiom in a different geopolitical location.

V této knize mapuje Alice Koubová kontext performativního obratu ve filosofii a zkoumá principy a důsledky, které z něho plynou. Nedělá to pouze pomocí analýzy konkrétní tematické oblasti, ale hledá a zpřesňuje zároveň specifický styl myšlení. Součástí tohoto stylu je připravenost filosofie transformovat se podél svého předmětu zájmu a být svou sebereflexí k dispozici něčemu jinému než své vlastní sebereflexi. Tato schopnost myslet v jistém smyslu netragicky, či z druhého místa, se ukazuje jako hlavní charakteristika tzv. performativní filosofie, ke které svým výkladem Alice Koubová směřuje.
Implicitním, avšak zcela klíčovým motivem této knihy je, že takto koncipovaný netragický filosofický styl lze snadno uplatnit na poli tzv. uměleckého výzkumu. Umělecký výzkum není čistě uměleckou tvorbou, ale není ani teorií umění, či estetikou. Je umožněn díky myšlení, které je k umělecké tvorbě ve specifickému vztahu. Tento vztah se tvoří, mohli bychom říci v excesivní blízkosti performativní umělecké aktivity a filosofické reflexe. Umělecký výzkum využívá filosofii, která se s uměleckou tvorbou vzájemně podmiňuje a mění.  Nejde tedy o jednoduchý způsob instrumentální aplikace filosofie na umění či umění na filosofii, ale o složitější vztahovou strukturu.

The question of attention in theatre remains relatively unexplored. In redressing this, Theatre and Aural Attention investigates what it is to attend theatre by means of listening. Focussing on four core aural phenomena in theatre - noise, designed sound, silence, and immersion - George Home-Cook concludes that theatrical listening involves paying attention to atmospheres.

Such matters are examined as they have arisen in some of the most sophisticated works of theatre sound design of recent years, including Sound & Fury's Kursk, Romeo Castellucci's Purgatorio, Complicite's Shun-kin and Robert Lepage's Lipsynch. In suggesting how theatre works to direct the audience's aural attention, the book also carries out an important enquiry into radio drama (Beckett's All That Fall, Embers, and Pinter's A Slight Ache).

This ground-breaking study will be of interest to drama students, sound theorists, practitioner-researchers, performance philosophers, and to anyone curious to explore what it means to attend theatre.

la théâtrophilosophie (l'étude de la philosophie à travers le théâtre) et la philosophie du théâtre (l'étude du théâtre à travers la philosophie). Il permet d'esquisser certains champs à travers lesquels sont cultivés la recherche des intersections entre le théâtre et la philosophie : les études sur l'esthétique, les notions philosophiques sur le théâtre, le caractère événementiel de la représentation comme scènes théâtrales.

This article describes the area which stretches between what could be
called théâtrophilosophie (the study of philosophy by way of theatre) and the philosophy of theatre (the study of theatre by way of philosophy). It enables us to sketch out certain areas of research into the intersections between theatre and philosophy: the study of aesthetics; philosophical notions of theatre; and the singular, one-off nature of the stage performance.

This text is an attempt to make an ontological analysis of American choreographer Deborah Hay's (1941-) 'performance practice' and to reflect its significance for the dance of the 2000-2020s. It bases its argumentation on the writer's participation as a documentarist for two of Hay's artistic processes, Foster 1986) and the writer's artistic PhD (2004) on the paradigm changes of dance ontologies during the 1900s, with the help of the fundamental ontology of Martin Heidegger.
The main argument of the article is that in Hay's dance practice the principles of idealistic aesthetics, ideal pre-images or forms, have been abandoned thoroughly; instead both the dancing and choreography emerges from the fundamentals of our bodily existence: from time and being-in-the-historical-world. With her focus on the embodied perceptual awareness of the uniqueness of the present moment, she is pointing to a possibility of both negotiating with and stepping momentarily over and out, of the conditioned historical continuums, both in choreographic language and in one's own embodied consciousness.
The fact that Hay proposes a series of bodily-perception questions to dancers instead of a specific movement language, does change the dancer's role and agency to a creative co-agent and the choreographic work to a score-based emergent event. Her practice offers a space to notice the body-mind's tendency to hold on representations of the world but also its potentiality to let go of them and play with movement as actualization of potentiality as potentiality. In Hay's practice the semantic, language, and somatic, movement, are negotiating and interacting with each other, and this interaction opens a space for embodied ecstatic temporal-horizon and topological spatiality as choreographic form-in-the-making.
Hay brought her performance practice back to the professional dance field at just that time in the beginning of the 2000s when much of European contemporary dance was recognizing the problems with often generic and inherited modern dance movement techniques. The article claims that with Hay's radical approach, dancer's technique and skill, rather than understood as a causal technique of production, is considered as situated embodied understanding and articulation, with which one can work on, in Heideggerian terms, the disclosure of being.

Answering the call of Alun Munslow, Robert Rosenstone and others for post-linguistic turn philosophy of history to look beyond language as, to quote Munslow, ‘rather restricting as a medium for engaging with the past’, this paper proposes and investigates performance - dance especially - as one possible alternative praxis for historical representation.  Focussing on a 1997 London performance of Steptext by postmodern choreographer William Forsythe, my paper begins by reading as post-structuralist Steptext’s desire to excavate, disrupt, and disavow the apparently logical structures which have shaped the history of western performance.  Arguing for Brecht as an especially apt ally in Forsythe’s realisation, through performance, of some of the fundamental tenets of Foucault’s re-conceptualisation of history, this paper then moves to consider the performance and its televisual adaptation - filmed by the BBC, Steptext was screened later the same year - as portals into new and arguably more self-reflexive modes of reading post-war British dance theatre as subjugated, or effective, history.

Western philosophical traditions from Descartes on have been haunted by an intellectualist thesis which centers the unique capacities of the human in an interior mental life. This particular feature of the human separates it in kind (rather than degree) from non-human, purely mechanistic lifeforms. Thus, the intellectualist thesis is supported by two founda-tional assumptions: first, that humans can be defined in virtue of their minds, and second, that having a mind separates humans from non-human animals. Phenomenologists have complicated the first assumption by emphasizing the embodied and embedded nature of existence: Husserl revealed the importance of the lifeworld, Heidegger added equipment and das Man, Levinas added the other, de Beauvoir added gender, and Merleau-Ponty added the body. Although these thinkers have complicated the Cartesian sanctity of the mind, there is nevertheless a tendency in phenomenology to remain fully within a human-centric research paradigm. Phenomenological research seems to suggest that animals do not have a world, or if they do, it is deficient. 1 This article will explore the possibilities of a posthuman phenomenology for unsettling this deficiency and suggest that certain forms of performance philosophy are the most effective methods for investigating this new terrain. 2 Performance is effective in overcoming human exceptionalism in the tradition of phenomenology through its emphasis on a lived practice of philosophy that is embodied, and entangled with other non-human animals. Jokob von Uexküll (2010) and Vilém Flusser and Louis Bec (2012) offer provocative suggestions for a new, speculative biology, but their methods remain largely imaginative-indeed Flusser and Bec refer to their work as a "fable." Although many insights can be gleaned from this approach, we will refer to some examples of posthuman phenomenol-ogy, and in particular the work of Charles Foster (2016), which shift from imagining alternative, non-human ways of being, to performing them. Researchers such as Foster begin with the recognition that to understand what it is like to be a non-human animal, the human body itself must be transformed. They explore their curiosity by attempting to "be" a non-human animal-to inhabit the world of the non-human other by augmenting their own bodies, habits, and ways of being in the world. Moving beyond mere mental speculation, Foster performs the human body differently, and in the process , touches upon a non-human excess that is not reducible to mere anthropocentric projection. Many phenomenologists have complicated this thesis, but there is nevertheless a tendency in phenomenology to remain fully within a human-centric research paradigm. This article will explore the possibilities of a posthuman phenomenology for unsettling this human-centeredness and suggest that certain forms of performance philosophy are the most effective methods for investigating this new terrain.

We are always in atmospheres. Every where has, is an atmosphere. We are always affected by atmosphere, more or less consciously, more or less intensively. A crowded street, an open field, night, a moment of anticipatory tension, a jubilant throng, the aroma of freshly-turned earth on a green hillside in the rain in the sombre stillness of a funeral, a post-coital haze, a boring seminar in a white box-shaped room. However neutral or benign a space is designed to be, however unconsciously or habitually dwelt, it has, it is, atmosphere. If space is anything more than volumetric void, ideal abstraction, or pure potential, it is atmosphere. Certainly, if space, as opposed to place, can be experienced, it is as atmosphere. This article outlines a phenomenological-performative methodology for the apprehension of atmospheres, based in the work of Hermann Schmitz and Gernot Böhme. It examines the concept of atmosphere in detail, and proposes a practical application in a site-specific performance project conducted in urban environments. Ultimately, it claims a role for performance phenomenology as a means of providing a more in-depth, body-centred analysis of the aesthetic experience of being in place than is attainable by other means.

Η σκηνοθεσία επιχειρεί ένα πέρασμα από το χάος της φαντασίας στον κόσμο, δηλαδή στην τάξη της συγκεκριμένης σκηνής: «σκηνοθετώ» σημαίνει αναπόφευκτα και «ταξι-θετώ», επιλέγοντας από ένα μεγάλο πλήθος δυνατοτήτων εκείνες που αρμόζουν καλύτερα να συγκεκριμενοποιηθούν και να ενεργοποιηθούν στο εκάστοτε παρόν μέσω του δικού μου οράματος του κόσμου, που είναι συνάμα ουτοπικό και πραγματικό. Η ταξιθεσία αυτή ισοδυναμεί με την οργάνωση και τη νομή της εμπειρίας του αισθητού και του νοητού.
Στη συνέχεια εξετάζονται οι νέες προοπτικές της σύγχρονης σκηνοθεσίας, οι οποίες  διαμορφώνονται με τους όρους της πληροφορικής και των νέων τεχνολογιών, αλλά και με τη σκηνική διερεύνηση και εφαρμογή ερευνητικών δεδομένων (λαογραφία, εθνολογία, ανθρωπολογία, ιστορία, ψυχανάλυση) και θεωρητικών προταγμάτων (φαινομενολογία και ερμηνευτική, δομισμός και μεταδομισμός, αναλυτική φιλοσοφία, σημειολογία, θεωρία της πρόσληψης, της διαλογικότητας, των ομιλιακών πράξεων και του καρναβαλικού στοιχείου) όπως επίσης και παλαιότερων καλλιτεχνικών εγχειρημάτων.
Υπό το πρίσμα αυτό εξετάζεται και η ισχυρή τάση της συλλογικής δημιουργίας μεταξύ των σκηνικών συντελεστών και μελετώνται οι νέες προκλήσεις που αντιμετωπίζει σήμερα η σκηνοθετική τέχνη: η τεχνολογική έκρηξη, η απώλεια των σταθερών αναφορών και η αυτονόμηση των τεχνών, η ζωτική αντίφαση ανάμεσα στην ενικότητα της παράστασης και στο αξίωμα διαχρονικότητας του σκηνοθετικού έργου, οι πολύπλοκες στρατηγικές της εικόνας.
Η μελέτη των προκλήσεων αυτών αποσκοπεί στη διαμόρφωση μιας βιώσιμης προοπτικής της σκηνοθεσίας μέσα στους κόλπους της καταναλωτικής κοινωνίας. Για τον συγγραφέα, η προοπτική αυτή συνίσταται στο εξής: η σκηνοθεσία μπορεί να αποστασιοποιηθεί από την κατεστημένη εικόνα της πραγματικότητας, μπορεί δηλαδή να αποδεσμευτεί από την υποχρέωση του διπλασιασμού αυτού που ήδη υπάρχει. Η σκηνοθεσία εκλαμβάνεται έτσι ως ένας λόγος ο οποίος, χωρίς να αρνείται την πραγματικότητα, την υπερβαίνει για να σκεφθεί το άσκεπτο, για να δώσει πρόσβαση σε νέους χαρακτήρες της αλήθειας, για να προσπελάσει απορητικά το μη αναπαραστάσιμο (το κενό, το μηδέν, τον θάνατο, την τρέλα), για να προσεγγίσει διάφορες μορφές της ετερότητας και να φωτίσει κάπως το άγνωστο και το ανοίκειο.
Αλλά όλοι αυτοί οι στόχοι ανήκουν παραδοσιακά στη φιλοσοφία. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι ο σκηνοθετικός, μπορεί να γίνει μια δραστική εκδοχή του φιλοσοφικού λόγου, ο οποίος δεν εργάζεται απαραίτητα με αφηρημένες έννοιες και υπερβατικές συλλήψεις, αλλά αναζητεί μια νέα διάσταση της γλώσσας μέσω της ομιλίας και της ποιητικής της διερεύνησης και επεξεργάζεται συστηματικά τις διάφορες μορφές της σωματικότητας, της ηχητικότητας και της σιωπής, της χωρικότητας και της χρονικότητας, της χρωματικότητας και της φωτεινότητας, με μια ιστορία βάσης ή με ένα πλαίσιο αναφοράς, ώστε να εντοπιστεί και να εγχρονιστεί η σκηνική δράση και να δοθεί στο κοινό η δυνατότητα να δοκιμάσει μια ερμηνευτική εξουσία και μια κριτική δύναμη, για να βιώσει μια πρόσκαιρη ουτοπία. Υπό το πρίσμα αυτό, ο σκηνοθετικός λόγος θα μπορούσε να περάσει από τη χειραγώγηση και την ταπεινή απομίμηση στη χειραφέτηση, τη δημιουργική μίμηση και την έρευνα των αληθειών.

Αναπτύσσεται με ένα λεπτομερές «ερωτηματολόγιο ανάλυσης» για έλεγχο και αυτοέλεγχο της θεατρικής κριτικής (πού γράφει, για ποιον γράφει, πώς αρθρώνει την κριτική του, με ποιο ύφος, με ποια ιδεολογία, με ποιες επιστημονικές ή μεθοδολογικές βάσεις, με ποια φιλοσοφικά στοιχεία, με ποιες εγκυκλοπαιδικές γνώσεις, με ποιες παραμέτρους πραγματολογικές, δεοντολογικές, και ακόμα και 40 «ανοιχτά ερωτήματα»).

During the last twenty years, there has been a slow but increasing proliferation of scholars and practitioners employing phenomenological methodologies in the study of performance. is is symptomatic of a desire to escape from overly theoretical approaches which diminish the status of the creation, enjoyment and experience of the performance and to embrace methods which allow an access to the materiality and affective substance of the performance itself. In this paper, I argue the worth and relevance of phenomenology to the study of performance, tracing some key historical developments, outlining the current state of the field, explaining some key points of resistance and pointing towards a few possible future directions. e paper begins in noting the phenomenological origin of many key debates in performance studies concerning embodiment, presence and reflective practice. It traces early developments in the field and points to isolated, often institution-specific pockets of activity. It makes a survey of recent publications and the exciting new field of performed phenomenology as a mode of embodied research.

Performing within and as a Cybernetic flow of information development, this interdisciplinary and experimental work identifies the manipulations of Time executed through both the 19th century occult-organization the Theosophical Society and 1990s experimental Philosophy group the CCRU.
The identification of time manipulation by and through these two groups will detail and assess the systematic mechanics and revelations of time-traveling ‘Hyperstitional’ technology implemented within the complex system of time. This assessment locates the Aesthetic practice of Fictioning progressive futures and the socio-ethical dimensions and implications of the developments which strive toward said futures.
Following a brief conceptual introduction to Time-travel, Hyperstition, and Cybernetics, the experimental exercise begins its evolution with an engagement of Theosophy’s cosmological Hyperstiton 'Spiritual Evolution', giving way to Occult Sexology, Satanic Feminism, and Cosmic Eugenics. From this will develop the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit’s actualization of Hyperstitional technology through Hauntological Necromancy and said technology’s implementation in not only Accelerationist and Esoterroristic Meme Magic, but also the collective-action Fictioning in Xenofeminist metapolitics.

Συγκεντρώνονται οι γενικευτικές αποφάνσεις από τριάντα πέντε δραματικά έργα του Καμπανέλλη, με θεματικές αναφορές από κάθε σχεδόν περιοχή των ανθρωπιστικών και κοινωνικών επιστημών: το θέατρο και η κοινωνική του εμβέλεια, η κοινωνία και η θεατρική της δομή· η δύναμη και η αδυναμία του λόγου, η δύναμη της φαντασίας, του ονείρου, της τρέλας και του έρωτα· οι σχέσεις της σκέψης με τον λόγο, της ιστορίας με τα υποκείμενά της, της μνήμης με τον χρόνο, της ηθικής με την αγάπη, την ευτυχία, την αλήθεια και την ελευθερία·  το άχθος της κοινωνικής αδικίας, του πολέμου και του θανάτου·  το σχολείο της μοναξιάς, του πόνου και του φόβου· οι μαίανδροι της πολιτικής, της γυναικείας παρουσίας, της συγγραφικής τέχνης· η γοητεία του υποσυνειδήτου, του άλλου, της ζωής, του κόσμου, του ανθρώπου. Μια πολυφωνική και πολυπρόσωπη παρακαταθήκη δημόσιου λόγου. Γιατί, οι γενικευτικές αποφάνσεις μοιάζουν σαν αυτόνομοι κυματισμοί της σκέψης μάλλον παρά ως σχηματικές θέσεις μεμονωμένων ατόμων. Για τον λόγο αυτόν είναι δύσκολο να διακρίνει κανείς καθαρά την πηγή τους: προέρχονται απ’ ευθείας από τη σκέψη του συγγραφέα και «δανείζονται» ευκαιριακά στα πρόσωπα ή απορρέουν άμεσα από τον χαρακτήρα, τη νοοτροπία και τη θέση των προσώπων στον μυθοπλαστικό κόσμο του εκάστοτε έργου; Δεν ισχύει ακριβώς ούτε το ένα ούτε το άλλο.
Οι αποφάνσεις ανήκουν τόσο στον ίδιο τον συγγραφέα, όσο και στα πρόσωπα που τις εκφωνούν ή ακριβέστερα, ανήκουν στον συγγραφέα επειδή πρωτίστως και κυρίως τα υποκείμενά τους είναι τα δραματικά πρόσωπα. Η σχετική αυτοτέλειά τους και η αποφθεγματική τους μορφή, όπως και η νοηματική τους δύναμη ή η ενίοτε αισθητική τους αρτιότητα, μας βάζουν προσωρινά σε πειρασμό να τις θεωρήσουμε ως ανύποπτες στιγμές συγγραφικής παράβασης. Από την άλλη πλευρά όμως  υποβάλλουν μία δομή βάθους, όπου αναδεικνύεται μία ισοτιμία φωνών και ένας πολυπρόσωπος θίασος, συγκροτημένος από όλα τα έργα. Ο διακειμενικός θίασος αυτός μοιάζει να συμπληρώνει ερμηνευτικά το κάθε έργο ξεχωριστά, χωρίς βεβαίως να το επισκιάζει.

The three centuries since the European Enlightenment have manifest rapid developments for both Science and technology. These developments have been accelerated by and proliferated across the socioeconomic structure of Capitalism. Evolving through and as the expanse of technoscientific industrialization is then an increasingly organized scientific model by which to determine what reality can and cannot do.
The world, and furthermore a greater extent of the universe, may now be understood from the perspective of scientific rationality, as a ‘disenchanted’, ordered, and logically consistent mechanistic structure free from divine interventions or supernatural forces. Entangled in the complexity of technoscientific commerce and consumer culture, these limits imposed by Science thus dictate and control development within and for society moving forward: what reality can and cannot be.

Presented here as critiques of the structured, hierarchical, and objective outlook on reality maintained through the interplay of Scientism and Socioeconomics, both Post-Structural theory and Magick provide theories and praxis for the artistic manipulation of time, causality, representation, and control as means for Postmodern ‘reality engineering’. Magick - performed across twentieth-century Occultism as both the science and art of causing change in accordance with will - does not go against the disenchanted presentation of reality, but rather works within it. So too does Post-Structural theory go to work within institutions and power structures, laboring to deconstruct the rigid organizational methods and reductions of ‘Objective’ systematization and thus expand the possibilities of thought and being into an open network of fluid possibility. 

Composed as Performance Philosophy, this work both details and demonstrates the intersection and overlap maintained between twentieth-century Occultism and Post-Structural Philosophy. Through an interdisciplinary analysis of Chaos Magick, Antonin Artaud’s Theater of Cruelty, LaVeyan Satanism, William Burroughs’ Cut-Up Method, the Esoterrorist tactics of experimental-music-organization Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth (TOPY), and the Hyperstitional Theory-Fictions of 1990s Experimental-Philosophy group the Cybernetic Culture Research Unit (CCRU), this thesis will provide a Postmodern theory for the subversive integration of non-represented elements into culture, society, and reality-models by their own means. As a work of Performance Philosophy, this theory will be utilized as the very methodology by and through which the research presented in this paper is articulated; the theory will be both explained and argued not in abstraction, but through and within its own application.
By an experimental aestheticization of information communication, this work provides a dynamic approach to questions, problems, and discourses across the Humanities through a utilization of Postmodern Aesthetics, Network Theory, and Post-Continental Philosophy of Time, functioning to deconstruct rigid historical narratives, research practices, and other dominant methods of control.

τίθεται το φιλοσοφικό ερώτημα του υποκειμένου και της ταυτότητας μέσα από ένα θεατρολογικό πρίσμα. Εξετάζεται κατ’ αρχάς η αφηγηματική και η εθική συνιστώσα στην κατανόηση του εαυτού, δηλαδή το γεγονός ότι ερμηνεύουμε τη ζωή μας ως μια ιστορία, ότι την τοποθετούμε σε διαδοχικά σκηνικά. Το αφηγηματικό υφάδι του εαυτού υπακούει σε μια βαθύτερη επιτελεστική ανάγκη: αυτό που νοηματοδοτούμε ως εαυτό είναι η διηθημένη απόρροια μιας σειράς ερωτημάτων και πρόσκαιρων απαντήσεων που τίθενται στο πλαίσιο μιας συνεκτικής αφήγησης. Από την άλλη μεριά, αυτό που ονομάζουμε ταυτότητα, το καταστάλαγμα της συνεκτικής αυτής αφήγησης, δεν μπορεί να εννοηθεί έξω από τους ηθικούς προσανατολισμούς που εκάστοτε ακολουθούμε.
Στη συνέχεια σκιαγραφείται μια τριπλή διανυσματική σχέση, που περιλαμβάνει την κίνηση από τον εαυτό στον ρόλο, από τον ρόλο στην ταυτότητα και αντιστρόφως. Εάν ο εαυτός αποτελεί την πιο ρευστή έννοια με την οποία προσπαθούμε να προσδιορίσουμε ένα πρόσωπο, και ο ρόλος είναι η σύλληψη του εαυτού σε μια συγκεκριμένη σκηνή του καθημερινού βίου, τότε η ταυτότητα αποτελεί το πιο σταθερό, αλλά όχι και αμετάβλητο, σύστημα γνωρισμάτων και σχέσεων που διέπουν τον εαυτό. Ο εαυτός απαντά στο ερώτημα: «ποιος είμαι απέναντί σου;». Η ερωτηματική αυτή μορφή μας οδηγεί κατ’ ευθείαν στην καρδιά της θεατρικής σχέσης, όπου ο εαυτός μπορεί να υπερβαθεί, (όχι όμως και να καταργηθεί), μέσω μιας δυναμικής σχέσης με τον άλλον. Η πολλαπλότητα του εαυτού είναι επομένως η πρώτη ασφαλής διαπίστωση που μας προσφέρει η φιλοσοφική διαβούλευση περί ανθρώπου, αλλά και το ίδιο το θέατρο.
Από την άλλη μεριά, ο ρόλος είναι μία σκηνή, μία παράσταση ή αλλιώς ένα πεδίο ενσάρκωσης των πολιτισμικών υποδειγμάτων, των στάσεων και των αξιών που το εκάστοτε κοινωνικό περιβάλλον φαντάζεται και σχεδιάζει, σχεδιάζοντας έτσι τις προσήκουσες ή τις εφικτές δράσεις που θα αναπτυχθούν στο εσωτερικό του. Με άλλα λόγια, ο ρόλος είναι προϊόν του συλλογικού εκείνου σχεδιασμού που περιλαμβάνει τόσο τη φαντασία, όσο και την ηθική και την πολιτική. Επειδή όμως τίποτα σε αυτά τα τρία πεδία (της φαντασίας, της ηθική και της πολιτικής) δεν είναι απολύτως προβλέψιμο ή καθορισμένο, οι σχέσεις που προϋποθέτει ή και συνεπάγεται ένας ρόλος δεν είναι ούτε κλειστές ούτε ανοιχτές.
Αφού αναιρεθεί η έννοια του φυσικού νόμου ως προϋπάρχοντος του εαυτού, περνούμε στην έννοια της ταυτότητας. Πρόκειται για μια οντότητα εν εαυτώ ταυτή, που γίνεται όμως διανοητή μόνο σε συγκεκριμένα πλαίσια αναφοράς. Κάτι είναι ταυτοποιήσιμο όταν μπορεί να ενταχθεί σε ένα πλαίσιο μεταβλητών παραμέτρων και να συγκριθεί με ομοειδή αντικείμενα που αποκλίνουν ή διαφοροποιούνται ουσιαστικά από αυτό, ενώ το ίδιο παρουσιάζει έναν συνειδητό βαθμό απαραμείωτης συνέχειας, αναλλοίωτης συνάφειας και δομικής σταθερότητας. Υπό ένα θετικό πρίσμα επομένως, η ταυτότητα προϋποθέτει την ομοιότητα και υπό ένα αρνητικό, τη διαφορά. Και τα δύο πρίσματα πρέπει να είναι ενεργά όταν επιχειρώ να αποδώσω μία ταυτότητα σε κάποιον, αφού η ενότητα ορίζεται στη βάση μιας πολλαπλότητας και η σύγκλιση στη βάση μιας διασποράς, τόσο στα ψυχολογικά και κοινωνικά, όσο και στα μυθοπλαστικά-θεατρικά σύνολα αναφοράς μας.
Ο εαυτός, οι ρόλοι και οι ταυτότητες δεν προϋπάρχουν κάπου έξω από τα ανθρώπινα διαβήματα και τους κοινωνικούς θεσμούς, αλλά συγκροτούνται σε συγκεκριμένα κοινωνικά και ιστορικά συγκείμενα. Θα ήταν μάλλον αφελές να πιστέψουμε ότι οι ταυτότητες έχουν προκατασκευασμένους πολιτικούς προσανατολισμούς ή παγιωμένα νοήματα, αλλά θα ήταν εξίσου αφελές να δεχθούμε ότι λειτουργούν μέσα στους κοινωνικούς ιστούς χωρίς πολιτικούς και ηθικούς προσανατολισμούς ή χωρίς κάποιον νοηματικό πυρήνα στον τρόπο άρθρωσής τους. Απεναντίας,  θεσμοθετούνται εμφατικά μέσω του παιχνιδιού των διαφορών με άλλες ταυτότητες, σηματοδοτώντας σύνορα και διαχωριστικά όρια σε σχέση με αυτό που δεν εμπίπτει στην ταυτότητα. Όπως ένα σύνορο συνδέει και χωρίζει ταυτόχρονα, όπως ένα όριο εγκλείει, αλλά και αποκλείει, έτσι και η ταυτότητα είναι μία κρυστάλλωση στοιχείων που κατηγοριοποιεί θετικά ή αρνητικά τα υποκείμενα που μετέχουν ή απέχουν των στοιχείων αυτών. Το γεγονός ότι οι κρυσταλλώσεις των ταυτοτήτων δεν είναι φυσικές διαδικασίες, αλλά κοινωνικές κατασκευές συνεπάγεται ότι ένα υποκείμενο μπορεί να επιχειρεί τη συγκρότηση διαφορετικών ταυτοτήτων σε διαφορετικές στιγμές της ζωής του.
Στη βάση αυτήν αναπτύσσονται οι διανυσματικές σχέσεις των ανθρώπων-ηθοποιών. Οι διανυσματικές σχέσεις υπάρχουν στις αμοιβαίες διηθήσεις του εαυτού, του ρόλου και της ταυτότητας. Οι διηθήσεις εκκινούν ήδη από τον εαυτό. Σε κάθε σκηνή του βίου υπάρχουν λόγοι, δυνάμεις, εντάσεις που διαπερνούν τον εαυτό και που δεν μπορούν να ανακτηθούν απόλυτα από αυτόν, καθώς τον κατοικούν με αινιγματικό τρόπο σαν να είναι η δική του οικεία ετερότητα. Στη θεατρική σκηνή ειδικότερα αυτή η ετερότητα είναι πολυεστιακή: πηγάζει (α) από την οντολογική διαφορά του ηθοποιού προς το δραματικό πρόσωπο που υποδύεται και οικειώνεται, (β) από την παρουσία του άλλου ηθοποιού, μέσω της οποίας αυτός ο πρώτος συγκροτεί τη δική του σκηνική ύπαρξη και (γ) από την παρουσία του κοινού, ενώπιον του οποίου και στην εμβέλεια του δικού του βλέμματος ο ηθοποιός είναι ηθοποιός. Στη συνέχεια, η επιτέλεση του εαυτού αναζητεί το έδαφος του ρόλου για να εκτυλιχθεί πληρέστερα. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει βεβαίως ότι εξαλείφεται το κενό του εγχειρήματος, ούτε ότι η εκτύλιξη της επιτέλεσης του εαυτού είναι πλήρης στο έδαφος του ρόλου, αλλά ότι το κενό αξιοποιείται έτσι ώστε να δοθεί ένα σχήμα, ένα πλαίσιο στη δυναμική του εαυτού. Είναι σίγουρο ότι, αναλόγως προς την ποιότητα και την ένταση του ρόλου, η δυναμική του εαυτού θα αμβλυνθεί ή θα συρρικνωθεί, αλλά, σε μια αντιστάθμιση αυτής της απώλειας, ο εαυτός βρίσκει έδαφος να προεκτείνει την προσπάθεια της επιτέλεσής του. Στο επόμενο βήμα τίθενται οι ταυτότητες: οι ταυτότητες δεν είναι απολήξεις, αλλά πυκνώματα ροών και δυναμικών κινήσεων, οι οποίες εκφράζονται μέσω των ρόλων.
Θα ήταν ίσως προτιμότερο να μιλάμε όχι για παγιωμένες ταυτότητες, αλλά μάλλον για ταυτοποιήσεις (identification) ─ και με τις δύο έννοιες του όρου: τη διαδικασία προς την ταυτοτική πύκνωση και την αναγνώριση του ότι μέσω αυτής της διαδικασίας αρθρώνεται και ενεργοποιείται μια φαντασιακή κοινότητα που ερείδεται στο αίσθημα του συνανήκειν.
Όπως και οι ρόλοι, αλλά με μεγαλύτερη ένταση, οι ταυτοποιήσεις ερείδονται στο αίσθημα του συνανήκειν και, ιδίως στη θεατρική σκηνή, συγκροτούνται μέσω της ενεργοποίησης της φαντασιακής κοινότητας, ύστερα από το όριο όσμωσης ηθοποιού και θεατών. Το διάνυσμα με τις συνάψεις της εαυτότητας με τους ρόλους και τα διακυβεύματα προς τις ταυτοποιήσεις αποκτά το εξής περίγραμμα: Αναζητώ τα όρια, όπως και την ενδοχώρα του εαυτού μου μέσα από τους ηθικούς προσανατολισμούς μου και τις αφηγήσεις που αποτολμώ για τη ζωή μου. Το σχέδιό μου μπορεί να αποτύχει και να αρχίσω πάλι την περιπλάνηση στην ενδοχώρα του εαυτού μου. Μπορεί όμως και να πετύχει, οπότε το εγχείρημά μου αποκτά ήδη ιδρυτική σημασία για τους ρόλους που αρχίζω να υιοθετώ και τα δραματικά πρόσωπα που προσοικειώνομαι. Πρόσωπα και ρόλοι προσιδιάζουν σε μια συνείδηση που μέλλει να δημιουργηθεί και σε μια συμμετοχή «που μέλλει να εγκαθιδρυθεί» στην προοπτική μιας φαντασιακής κοινότητας που μόλις και αχνοφαίνεται ανάμεσα σε μένα, τον ηθοποιό, και τους άλλους, τους θεατές μου. Αυτή η προοπτική μπορεί να πραγματοποιηθεί, μπορεί και όχι. Εάν δεν πραγματοποιηθεί, επιστρέφω στους ρόλους και στα πρόσωπα που υποδύθηκα για να επιφέρω αλλαγές, τροποποιήσεις ή αντικαταστάσεις ή για να αποτραβηχτώ ακόμα βαθύτερα στον εαυτό μου. Εάν πραγματοποιηθεί, θα πρέπει να προβώ σε ταυτοποιήσεις του εαυτού μου με πιο πυκνά κοινωνικά μορφώματα, τα οποία αποδέχομαι ως πλαίσια δράσης. Προβαίνω λοιπόν στη συγκρότηση μιας ταυτότητας, της δικής μου ταυτότητας, αλλά με τον τρόπο μιας ανοιχτής προσχώρησης. Θα λέγαμε ότι έχω αυτήν την ταυτότητα επί θητεία, δεν είμαι μόνιμος φορέας της.

αρχίζει με την αμφισβήτηση του παλαιού δόγματος που θέλει τον Πλάτωνα έναν ορκισμένο εχθρό του θεάτρου, υποστηρίζοντας ότι ο φιλόσοφος προσπάθησε να δημιουργήσει μια εναλλακτική δραματική φόρμα, τον σωκρατικό διάλογο, ο οποίος εκπροσωπείται από κείμενα που προβάλλουν τη θεατρικότητα του φιλοσοφικού λόγου (ακόμα και όταν στρέφονται εναντίον του θεάτρου), με ένα κυρίως δραματικό πρόσωπο, που συγκροτούν έναν λόγο διαλογικής διάρθρωσης συλλογισμών και «αγωνιστικής» διάταξης επιχειρημάτων, ο οποίος χρησιμοποιεί συχνά έννοιες δανεισμένες από τον κόσμο του θεάτρου, που προορίζεται να ακουστεί σε ένα μικρό σχετικά κοινό, χωρίς τα οπτικά χαρακτηριστικά του χορού και της σκηνογραφίας και που εισάγει μια νέα θεματική: τη φιλοσοφική ανησυχία για τον άνθρωπο και τη ζωή του. Τα κείμενα αυτά επιπλέον είναι ίσως τα πρώτα φιλοσοφικά έργα όπου επιχειρείται μια οικειοποίηση θεατρικών πρακτικών εκ μέρους της φιλοσοφίας. Η συνέχεια ανήκει στη διάκριση της φιλοσοφίας του θεάτρου από τη θεωρία του θεάτρου. Παρά τη γειτνίασή τους, τα δύο πεδία είναι διακριτά καθώς η μεν θεωρία του θεάτρου αποτελεί την πιο αφαιρετική βαθμίδα στην κλίμακα των θεατρικών μελετών, ακολουθούμενη από την ιστορία και την κριτική του θεάτρου, η δε φιλοσοφία του θεάτρου βρίσκεται εκτός αυτής της κλίμακας, αλλά μπορεί να επιδράσει σε όλες τις βαθμίδες της. Η θεωρία του θεάτρου αποτελεί συνάρτηση τόσο της ιστορίας, όσο και της κριτικής του θεάτρου. Η φιλοσοφία του θεάτρου όμως αν και διαποτίζει κάθε σχέση του θεατρολογικού τριγώνου, ωστόσο δεν εγκλείεται σε αυτό, καθώς τα ερωτήματα που θέτει και τα ζητήματα με τα οποία καταπιάνεται όχι μόνο υπερβαίνουν τις σχέσεις αυτές, αλλά προσέτι αντλούνται από περιοχές πέραν του θεάτρου (ηθική, γνωσιολογία, πολιτική φιλοσοφία κ.τ.λ.).
Ακολούθως σκιαγραφούνται τα επιμέρους γνωστικά πεδία όπου θα μπορούσε να αναπτυχθεί η θεατροφιλοσοφία. Τα πεδία αυτά είναι: 1) Οι αισθητικές έρευνες. 2) Επεξεργασία φιλοσοφικών εννοιών που ανήκουν στον πυρήνα της θεατρικής τέχνης (λ.χ. χώρος και χρόνος, παράσταση και αναπαράσταση, εαυτός και άλλος, είναι και φαίνεσθαι, το theatrum mundi, οι ρόλοι και οι ταυτότητες, το γεγονός και το συμβάν). 3) Τα δραματικά στοιχεία στην ιστορία της φιλοσοφίας και στις φιλοσοφικές «σχολές». 4) Η μελέτη του τρόπου με τον οποίον οι φιλόσοφοι και οι ιδέες τους έχουν επηρεάσει και συνεχίζουν να επηρεάζουν τη συγγραφή θεατρικών έργων και τη δημιουργία θεατρικών παραστάσεων: 4α) Οι φιλόσοφοι και οι ιδέες τους στο δράμα και στη σκηνή, 4β) η φιλοσοφία των συγγραφέων καθώς περνά από το φιλοσοφικό στο δραματικό (η σκηνικό) τους έργο. Πρόκειται για τους φιλοσόφους-δραματουργούς (λ.χ. Denis Diderot, Voltaire, Lessing, Gabriel Marcel, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, Simone de Beauvoire, Iris Murdoch, Felix Guattari, Alain Badiou, Denis Guénoun, Joseph Danan, Régis Debray), 4γ. η ανάδειξη φιλοσοφικών ιδεών σε επιμέρους σημεία ή σε γενικότερα πεδία ενός έργου ή μιας παράστασης και 4δ) οι επιμέρους φιλοσοφικές μελέτες ή και ολόκληρες πραγματείες σε έργα δραματουργών, σκηνοθετών και γενικότερα θεατρικών δημιουργών, όπως επίσης και σε μεγάλα θέματα και είδη του θεάτρου (λ.χ. ο Jaspers μελετά τον Strindberg, ο Benjamin τον Brecht, ο Guénoun τη Jasmina Reza, ο Sartre τον Genet, o Lyotard τον Sartre, ο Badiou τον Beckett, ο Derrida και ο Lacoue-Labarthe τον Artaud, ο Deleuze τον Carmelo Bene, η Marie José Mondzain τον Valère Novarina, ο Καστοριάδης την αττική τραγωδία, ο Luis Althusser τον Carlo Bertollazzi και τον Brecht, η Judith Butler τη σοφόκλεια Αντιγόνη). 5) Ο έλεγχος που μπορεί να ασκήσει το θεατρικό κείμενο ή η σκηνή σε μείζονες φιλοσοφικές ιδέες και οι προοπτικές που μπορούν να τους προσδώσουν.

As an aesthetic work of Performance Philosophy, this text both presents and performs a theory of Postmodern Aesthetics as a method for the ritualistic Fictioning of reality.
Developing out of the works of Artaud, Deleuze, and Negarestani, a Xenopoetic approach to both Theater and theatricality is put forward as a mode of Affective Magic - or more specifically, Aesthetaphysicks - conceived of as a Speculative Aesthetics accelerating Occulture through a non-representational Theater Without Organs.

Αναπτύσσονται οι θέσεις του φιλοσόφου για την αττική τραγωδία και το πολιτικό της υπόβαθρο. Η τραγωδία για τον Καστοριάδη δεν είναι απλώς ένα είδος στο οποίο γράφτηκαν ορισμένα από τα αριστουργήματα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας, αλλά μια ζωντανή πρόκληση για τη δημιουργία ενός κοινού κόσμου νοημάτων και σημασιών εντός και δια της πόλεως. Η ενεργή συμμετοχή στην πολιτική ζωή ισοδυναμεί, υπό το πρίσμα αυτό, με τη συμμετοχή στη δημιουργία της ίδιας της κοινωνικής πραγματικότητας. Γι’ αυτό και η γνήσια δημοκρατία, αυτή που εμφανίζεται εν σπέρματι στην αρχαία Αθήνα, είναι ένα τραγικό πολίτευμα, καθώς θεμελιώνεται στην ‘ανοιχτότητα’ των θεσμίσεών της, άρα στον αυτοπεριορισμό της ελευθερίας και της βούλησης, εκεί όπου δεν υπάρχουν ασφαλή και δεδομένα όρια. Παράλληλα, η τραγωδία έχει έναν έντονο δημοκρατικό χαρακτήρα, στον βαθμό που η κύρια διδασκαλία της είναι η θνητότητα του ανθρώπου και άρα ο ριζικός περιορισμός του στο πλαίσιο της ὕβρεως. Τραγική δημοκρατία και δημοκρατική τραγωδία είναι δύο έννοιες που συνυφαίνονται αξεδιάλυτα με εκείνη της φιλοσοφίας στην προοπτική του προτάγματος για την αυτοδημιουργία του ανθρώπου.

I propose the constellation “Nietzsche and Haiti” for a decolonial reinterpretation of the Haitian Revolution as an emancipatory destiny.  Inspired by Buck-Morss’ “Hegel and Haiti,” my refusal to sever Haiti from the history of western political theory turns this time towards Nietzsche. In Nietzsche’s genealogy I seek for a way of dramatizing history so that revolutionary events acquire a renewed vitality through the alternative modes of emplotting them. It is Nietzsche’s dramatization of history, in other words, what I consider most useful for a decolonial reinterpretation of the Haitian Revolution. The post-colonial contradictions of modern freedom, I conclude, are dramatized via the post-colonial rebirth of tragedy, a la Nietzsche, in the Afro-Caribbean reinterpretation of the Haitian Revolution.

This article aims to show how Fernand Deligny’s thought and practices
with autistic children, as well as his impact on Deleuze and Guattari, offer a paradigm of subjectivity that in turn rests upon an aesthetic and political account of what we can shape and share in common with autistic people. Well known by French educators and followers of alternative psychiatry, Fernand Deligny remains quite unknown in English-speaking parts of academia (a first translation of some of his texts should be published in 2015) despite his influence on the work of Deleuze and Guattari. Nevertheless, Deligny’s proposals are of great interest for renewing how we think about subjectivity.

From an edited collection that brings together an internationally known and interdisciplinary group of scholars (including François Laruelle himself) who use non-philosophy to cross the boundaries between philosophy and performance, this chapter focuses on quantum complementarity in the work of Georges Bataille wherein it is seen to wield a heuristic power that causal description or teleological writing cannot provide. It is the playful mediation between narrative induction and performative philosophy that helps readers of Bataille to negotiate the world’s inherent discontinuity, offering quantum “bundles” as a way of breaking through the sequential determinism of phenomena.

Aesthetically speaking, the visual representation of quantum bundles playfully unleashes paroxysms of emotional, psychic, and spiritual development. As such, Max Born’s definition of quantum mechanics is transmuted into a kind of quantum mechan(t)ics, evoking a linguistic tomfoolery that functions both heuristically and metaphorically as an acausal entryway, an opening to a critical playfulness ultimately curating the readerly co-quantization with what is being observed.

Impregnada pelas filosofias da diferença, passagens autobiográficas e proposições pedagógicas, defende uma ecologia da expressão cuja relevância à pele como superfície de contato com o mundo habilitaria os corpos à criação de novos mundos.
