This issue of KIU Journal of Social Sciences touches on governance, development, organizational management, social psychology and creative writing.
In Governance and Development, Tarabinah discusses the impact of activities of Transnational Oil Corporations, especially Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) on human rights in Bayelsa state, Nigeria. He advises the Federal Government of Nigeria to establish an effective system of oversight in the oil industry which will factor the externality of oil on social and human rights. Sapele also argues that since NEPAD has not created the desirable changes on the individuals, participating countries should implement the policies and programmes of NEPAD, coordinate and complete poverty projects identified in the poverty reduction strategy paper (now vision 2030). Haruna, finally, examines the socio-economic justification for privatization and suggests alternative strategies to the policy.
Under Organizational Management, Okiswa and Oketch report their findings on the impact of motivation on job satisfaction among employees of Kampala University, in Masaka, Luwero and Jinja Study Centers and recommend that adequate monetary and non monetary rewards should be given to the employees, in form of salaries, wages among others for better job satisfaction. Yahaya, Kinyata and Maicibi establish a correlation between pay-for-knowledge and employee commitment among employees of commercial banks in Kano, Nigeria and recommend increase rewards on employee flexibility, independence and increase acquisition of knowledge in order to increase and sustain employee commitment. Twaha and Oketch further argue that well developed and implemented appraisals need to be upheld by all organizations so as to have an inventory of their human resource strengths and weaknesses in their day to day operations. Adamu also identifies human resource policies and other factors such as job satisfaction, organizational commitments and leadership practice that affect employee‘s satisfaction in an organization.
In the Section on Social Psychology, Imbuki and Twinomujuni establish that there is a significant negative relationship between caregiver‘s burden and psychological wellbeing of those living with HIV/AIDS. Gambo and Imbuki also examine the role played by counseling in encouraging and developing self efficacy, self motivation, and self awareness of vocational trained graduates of Kano state tertiary institutions. They recommend that adequate and professional school counselors and facilities should be provided to every school, resource mobilization to assist the vocational graduates, and also group counseling should be adopted by school counselors to raise the self efficacy, self motivation, and self awareness of their students which are personality attributes that could help in making them become self employed, instead of waiting for white collar jobs which is not readily available for them.
Through Creative Writing, Kekeghe demonstrates that the play-songs, in African Oral Literature, are blends of the dramatic and the poetic nuances as it is the case with western literary delineation. Also, drawing relevant examples from Chinua Achebe‘s Things Fall Apart and Sol Plaatje‘s Mhudi, Omoko argues that the thematic goal of the earliest African writers is the reassertion of the African cultural identity that has been made parlous by colonialism in a manner that history is put in its proper perspective.
On the whole, this edition of KIU Journal of Social Sciences features many thought provoking articles. Some of these articles are empirical in nature while others have theoretical base. Each of them focuses on one specific social and management problem or the other; trying to proffer solutions to them. Readers are therefore advised to make proper use of the ideas presented by the various authors.

Management needs a lot of tools to use in order to run an organization effectively. Such tools that have been in use include; strategic planning, customer relationship management, employee engagement survey, benchmarking and balanced score card. These tools to an extent, have proved to be a little bit effective but not in a whole sense. This is due to the dynamism of today’s organizations and the employees working in such organizations. Management By Objective (MBO) is a modern tool of management that seeks to address the evolving issues in organizations as far as the achievement of set objectives is concerned. The main aim of this seminar is to examine effect of Management by Objectives (MBO) as an instrument for organizational performance.
Management by objectives refers to a structured management technique of setting goals for any organizational unit.. Management by objectives is not only a managerial strategy to achieve a well co-ordinated managerial goal, but it is also a popular management techniques that cut across or pervade all human activities namely business areas, education, government, health care and non-profit organization. Unfortunately many of the organizations are yet to adopt this technique in enlisting commitment and support of their staff. The paper recommended that managers should consult his subordinates in drawing up unit objectives which goes up the hierarchy from where it is modified, collected, approved and distributed throughout the organization. Moreso, there should be autonomy in implementation of plans once the objectives have been agreed upon, the individual should enjoy wide discretion in choosing the means for achieving the objectives without being directed by higher ranking manager. Finally, the seminar paper revealed a lot of positive implications and relevance of management by objectives to
modern day management of organizations especially in Nigeria. In practical terms, the operations of management by objectives requires that each manager of a unit draws up his department objectives with his subordinates in line with the centrally stipulated corporate objectives and mission.

This research, conducted by the author when a Senior Researcher at Newcastle University, UK, was funded by a UK governance organisation to help them assess, integrate and improve their understanding of the governed population.

ABSTRACT: Governance organisations have been urged to develop more holistic evidence-based approaches with partners to better deal with issues affecting the governed population. This presupposes an understanding of the population, yet there has been little research work addressing how governance organisations come to understand their governed population, nor how this understanding can be improved upon within such organisations.

This case study examined in-depth how understanding of a governed population was developed within one UK local governance organisation and it explored how such understanding might be developed and improved through more holistic and evidence-based organisational learning within the organisation and its governance partnerships.

The research methodology involved placement within the governance organisation, participant observations on several projects and innovative initiatives, observations within, across, and outside the organisation, and also interviews with varied key stakeholders.

The study examined:

- stakeholder engagement and networks
- current and varied understandings of the population
- mechanisms actually used for developing understandings
- the influence of context on organisational learning

and analysed these to arrive at a recommendations to improve organisational understanding of the governed population.

In the case studied, significant strengths were found: including innovative past learning trials for development, extensive ongoing networking activities, and many varied and accumulating quantitative datasets available across partnerships.

However, entrenched organisational approaches and practices constrained the development of holistic evidence-based understanding, for instance: the absence of systematic maintained collective learning processes; weak recording and forgetting of understandings; methodological exclusion of stakeholders from the development of understanding; the relative neglect of qualitative data, explanations, investigations, interpretations, and reflexivity; and also implicit organisational acceptance of such limitations and low aspirations.

Nonetheless, untapped opportunities existed to enable change including: latent practitioner knowledge and innovative management champions, the desire for improvement and raised aspirations within learning networks, and the development potential of alterative learning approaches.

It was concluded that more holistic evidence-based understanding was possible, but required new learning approaches beyond those then in use in both local government or academia.

Recommendations are made to utilise and develop improved organisational learning approaches trialed and reported in the case study.

It is argued that the case study findings, conclusions, and recommendations may be applicable to other similar local governance organisations and partnerships that seek to better understand local populations, services and interventions.

What are the best practices for leading a workforce in which human employees have merged cognitively and physically with electronic information systems and work alongside social robots, artificial life-forms, and self-aware networks that are ‘colleagues’ rather than simply ‘tools’? How does one manage organizational structures and activities that span both actual and virtual worlds? How are the forces of technological posthumanization transforming the theory and practice of management?

This volume explores the reality that an organization’s workers, managers, customers, and other stakeholders increasingly comprise a complex network of human agents, artificial agents, and hybrid human-synthetic entities. The first part of the book develops the theoretical foundations of an emerging ‘organizational posthumanism’ and presents conceptual frameworks for understanding and managing the evolving workplace relationship between human and synthetic beings.

Subsequent chapters investigate concrete management topics such as the likelihood that social robots might utilize charismatic authority to inspire and lead human workers; potential roles of AIs as managers of cross-cultural virtual teams; the ethics and legality of entrusting organizational decision-making to spatially diffuse robots that have no discernible identity or physical form; quantitative approaches to comparing the managerial capabilities of human and artificial agents; the creation of artificial life-forms that function as autonomous enterprises which evolve by competing against human businesses; neural implants as gateways that allow their human users to participate in new forms of organizational life; and the implications of advanced neuroprosthetics for information security and business model design.

As the first comprehensive application of posthumanist methodologies to the field of management, this volume will be of use to scholars and students of contemporary management and to management practitioners who must increasingly understand and guide the forces of technologization that are rapidly reshaping organizations’ form, dynamics, and societal roles.

"En el presente documento, se genera una aproximación a un modelo de gestión organizacional desde el que se pretende analizar las capacidades del talento humano para el logro de objetivos, siendo estos objetivos, desglosados en actividades y entregables finales y/o intermedios que pueden ser de carácter tangible e intangible.

En este orden de ideas, el objetivo de la propuesta teórica de modelo de gestión, es el de presentar diferentes factores derivados de una serie de dimensiones como son desarrollo humano, condiciones laborales, y productividad, en este sentido, se tendrían las cualidades personales y de la calidad de vida del individuo, asociados a la dimensión desarrollo humano; el diseño organizacional, con sus diferentes componentes en cuanto a estructura, formas organizativas, definición de estrategias, procesos, comunicación, y escenarios de talento humano, en asocio con la dimensión condiciones laborales; y, finalmente, los factores de producción, como son tierra, trabajo, capital, tecnología e información, como aspectos asociados a la dimensión productividad, todo lo anterior, en la búsqueda de un desarrollo competitivo para las organizaciones.

Abstract
"In this paper, it is generated an approach to a model of organizational management from which it is intended to analyze the capacity of human talent in order to achieve objectives, been these objectives, broken down into final and/or intermediate activities and outcomes that could be of tangible and intangible nature.

In this order of ideas, the objective of the theoretical proposal of management model, is to show different factors derived from a series of dimensions such as human development, labor conditions, and productivity, in this way, there are the personal characteristics and the quality of life of the individual associated with the dimension human development; organizational design, with its different components in structure, organizational forms, definition of strategies, processes, communication, and human talent scenarios, in association with the dimension working conditions; and finally, production factors, such as land, labor, capital, technology and information, are shown as aspects related to the dimension productivity; all of the above, looking for competitive development for organizations.

Thus, the analysis of human development, working conditions, and productivity, become into a theoretical exercise of support in order to construct indicators for the implementation of activities and outcomes under conditions established from the deployment and disaggregation of objectives, in conjunction with setting of goals that match the organizational requirements, all of the above, from a documental approach that implies the review of different authors considering the three dimensions object of study."

This research was funded by, and implemented within, a UK national research organisation, while the author was the KE and Impact Evaluation Manager responsible for assessing impact on a £15m UK government-funded research programme.

This work was also submitted as the authors MBA dissertation which was accepted and awarded in 2009.

ABSTRACT: A methodology and methods ‘toolbox’ is proposed for conducting impact research and assessment from within research programmes. The emphasis is upon how to clarify and assess the wider impacts from the early stages onwards.

The approach explicitly acknowledges, and attempts to address, the known issues and challenges of impact assessment while drawing upon the resources and opportunities available to research managers and researchers within such programmes.

The study has two triangulating foundations. Firstly, it examines the academic literature to help identify and design the pilot methodology and methods. Secondly it trials these in a real programme to both test and improve them.

The study was conducted over one year within one leading UK research organisation, where two research programmes (and around 60 research projects of £15m total value) were being assessed for their impacts. The study draws upon actual impact management experience and reflection, prospective (ex ante) and retrospective (ex post) assessments, participatory contributions from leading researchers undergoing assessment, and consultation with external users. The findings of this study outline the pilot and its first iteration. Recommendations are made for improvement to the methodology and methods.

A subsequent follow-on bid to UK government incorporating the impacts identified from implementing this methodology, successfully led to a further £15m of government funding.

It is expected the pilot methodology and methods will be applicable to other organisations, conducting and funding such research programmes, required to research and assess the wider research impacts.

Although primary focus of implemetation trials was upon research in physical sciences, technology, high-tech engineering, computing/IT, and environment, the wider literature study, the methodology design and justification, the methods proposed and used, and the resulting general recommendations and lessons are expected to apply more broadly to many other research areas, where the impact is to be found more widely in the society, economy, government or public sector or within organizations, policies, professions or the public.

Interest in this work is expected from research programme managers, impact managers and assessors, management consultants advising in this area, and government funding managers, all seeking to embed a developing approach to understand, capture, and enhance wider impact.
