Nicolaus Cusanus

This article offers a new interpretation of Bodin’s stance on the classic issue of action and contemplation -- a vexata quaestio of Bodinian scholarship that takes us to the heart of Bodin's views on ethics, politics, and theology. Taking into account the entire arc of Bodin's production, from the Methodus to the Paradoxon, the article considers Bodin's changing views on the 'best form of life' and argues that towards the end of his life Bodin came to redefine completely the problem by positing a third stage of human experience, which he called "reflection" (actus reflexus in Latin, reflexion in French) and described as the passive enjoyment of God's light reflected in the human soul as in a mirror. The article explores how Bodin's theory of reflection relates to his theology and spirituality, on the one hand, and to his ethical views on the other.  By raising the question of Bodin’s sources for this theory, the article also uncovers his profound debts to late-medieval Scholasticism and Christian mysticism, especially that of Nicholas of Cusa.

In the works of Nicolaus Cusanus and Martin Luther, occasionai references to the Jubilee can be found, both as a biblical theme (based on Lv 25; Is 61,1-2; Lc 4,19) and as an ecclesiastical institution. In two texts by Cusanus - the "Sermon XXIII" (1441) and the "Coniectura de ultimis diebus" (1446) - the fiftieth year is adopted as a criterion for scanning the ages of the world, while no significant references to the "biblical" jubilee are to be found in the sermons and other interventions in the years of the legation in Germany as a preacher of indulgences and a reformer of the ecclesiastical structures (1451-52). The tension between the "biblical" and the "ecclesiastical" (papisticus) jubilee is, on the other hand, very strong in Martin Luther, as appears above ali in the "Dispute of Leipzig" (1519) and in the notes on the papal bulls for the proclamation of the Holy Year in 1525. Although his polemical intention prevails, Luther attributes his stand to the christological motive and to the announcing of the Gospel, even though a "political" interpretation of the jubilee theme is not lacking. This may be found, though in an "anti- Utopian " key, also in Melanchthon.

"In his De visione Dei, Nicholas of Cusa addresses two aspects of divine vision: my desire to see God and God’s capacity to see
me. The latter aspect is distinguished by absolute power: God’s gaze is all-seeing. To explain this peculiar power Cusa
introduces what he calls the figure of an ‘omnivoyant’. This is a portrait with its eyes turned towards the spectator so that the
gaze of the depicted person appears to follow the spectator. This paper shows how this optical effect determined the choice
of the full-face view as the characteristic way to represent the divine in Renaissance painting, and how inscriptions on the
frames of a series of portraits of Christ attributed to Jan van Eyck reveal that the use of this effect was deliberate and in
accordance with theological doctrine."

El hilo conductor de la antropología filosófica de Nicolás de Cusa es la noción de la mente humana como unidad simple. Durante el curso de su vida, esta unidad, concebida no como substancia sino como fuerza dinámica, va desplegando las posibilidades que encierra con el fin de alcanzar su perfección. Esta perfección o estado de plenitud se alcanza -nunca de modo completo, por ser la mente finita- en la unión con el primer principio de todas las cosas, al que Nicolás identifica con el Dios unitrino del cristianismo. Por lo general, el Cusano describe este recorrido como la búsqueda que las naturalezas intelectuales hacen de su perfección, que es la verdad. Nuestro trabajo amplía la noción de “naturaleza intelectual”, mostrando que el camino de la mente hacia su fin es también entendido por Nicolás como un movimiento amoroso cuya condición de posibilidad es cierto pre-conocimiento innato al que identifica con la fe.

This book maps the entire development of Comenius’s considerations on man, from his earliest writings to his philosophical masterwork. Although this book primarily offers an analysis and description of the conception of man in Comenius’s work, it may also serve the reader as a more general introduction to his philosophical conception. The author shows that, in spite of the fact that Comenius has received no small amount of academic attention, funded studies or monographs in English language remain in single figures. Thus, a range of Comenius’s remarkable ideas are still unknown to the wider public.

Apophatic Measures: Toward a Theology of Irreducible Particularity is a work of constructive comparative theology examining select writings of Śaṅkara (Eighth Century, India) and Nicholas of Cusa (Fifteenth Century, Germany). It investigates the theological significance of individuality, difference, and diversity from the perspectives of these provocative thinkers. It argues that, for Śaṅkara and Cusa, apophasis does not culminate in what Michael Sells calls a “semantic event,” but instead in a sensual event. For each, negation removes intellectual distractions, awakening one to a heightened state of sensual attentiveness. Thus awakened, one attends to other persons, perceiving individuals as unique disclosures of ultimate reality.
For Śaṅkara, this is observed in the embodied encounter wherein a teacher incarnates Vedānta scripture, literally points at a student, and reveals “This Self is Brahman” (Māṇḍūkya Upaniṣad 2). In part, a student comes to see himself/herself as Brahman because of being seen as such by the guru who gives voice to the scripture in order that it may be heard (śruti). For Cusa, the intimate encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (John 4) is paradigmatic of true, attentive sensuality. Though thirsty and fatigued, Jesus genuinely sees the woman just as she is, speaking to her particularly and personally, rather than reducing her individuality to socially or religiously constructed categories.
Employing a heuristic device termed “apophatic measure” in its trifold meanings of method, sensuality, and particularity, this dissertation contributes to contemporary discourses on the ontology of difference, the theo-ethical valuation of diversity, and the singularity of unique bodies. Rather than reducing individuals to ethnic, gendered, or other essentializing measures, persons are regarded as unique disclosures of ultimate reality. Each person is re/cognized as an unprecedented imago Dei (from Cusa’s perspective) or as a particular manifestation (vyakti) of Ātman-Brahman (from Śaṅkara’s perspective). Through the pedagogy and performance of apophatic theology, one progressively removes epistemic universals (including race, gender, and religious identity) superimposed upon unique persons, thereby cultivating a phenomenology of irreducible particularity. In other words, one learns to perceive the unique divinity of individual persons. Cusa and Śaṅkara refer to this, respectfully, as a vision of God and as seeing the highest Self. Awakened to an attentive sensuality, one re/cognizes this Self, incarnate before one’s very eyes, as an apophatic measure of the immeasurable divine.

Il volume ripercorre lo sviluppo del pensiero del giovane Nicola Cusano dalla frequentazione del maestro albertista Eimerico da Campo presso l’Università di Colonia (1425) e dal confronto con le posizioni filosofiche dei domenicani dello Studium coloniense, fino agli anni della maturità a Roma (1450).

Il saggio illustra il contesto storico-culturale della genesi del De docta ignorantia, testo che suggella la presa di distanza di Cusano dal proprio passato universitario ma anche, al contempo, la sua insoddisfazione nei confronti dell’umanesimo diffuso in Italia negli anni del Concilio di Ferrara-Firenze; e lo segue nella sua ‘caccia della Sapienza’, nell’incontro con differenti tradizioni e contesti, fino alla formulazione dell’ideale del ‘Socrate cristiano’ nell’Idiota.

Il volume, riccamente documentato anche sul piano della storia delle interpretazioni e degli studi su Cusano, contribuisce a far luce sulla formazione del suo pensiero e sulle questioni che ne hanno segnato la vita.

Written by a natural scientist, this book is an essay on universal consciousness, which the author explores using a comparative approach borrowed from the neurosciences and Physics. A super sentient being, God is relative to a level of organization and is necessarily hidden for sentient beings of lower levels.

The relationship between philosophical theories and early Renaissance
art’s innovations is understandable through their peculiar contributions to the birth of a new anthropology and the concept of the role that individuum can play in active relation to alterity, which initiates from self-perception. The humanistic coté around Cusanus – enriched unequivocally by Alberti’s ideas and practical applications – experiments with effective instruments in order to face
the tension between finite and infinite, between limited human points of view and the divine panoptic gaze. The experiments generate opportunities for dynamic processing by “mens” and its “mensurare”. The most significant novelty in this is the recourse to a method of analysing phenomena which can be substantiated
with the heuristic function of both mathematics and the symbolic.
The ultimate goal of this paper is to present an interpretation which unites the Albertian perspective and “the myth of Narcissus as the creator of painting”; in addition, the paper proposes a parallelism between those two and essential aspects of Cusanus’ thoughts.

I offer  the published version of my article. This work presents an in-depth study of Mark's method of doing ecclesiology and ranking theological authorities.
Quite a few, heretofore unknown, facts have been discovered:
(1.) The important interventive roles of the papacy that were appreciated by Mark in the history of the Orient
(2.) Mark's reliance on Photius' works for ecclesiology
(3.) Mark's acceptance of the forgeries: (a.) Actus B. Sylvestri and (b.) Donation of Constantine per Photius and Balsamon respectively.
(4.) Mark's explicit and deep commitment to Constantinople V (8th Ecumenical Council) 879-80.

Furthermore, and entire section rigorously reproduces Mark's method for ranking and interpreting theological authorities. Surprisingly, Mark's method is not unlike the Commonitorium of St. Vincent of Lérins. He acknowledges classical "loci theologici" or topoi as they came to be catalogued by Mechior Cano in the 16th century. This firmly places him in the strongest possible position to dialogue meaningfully with Latins of his own epoch as well as with contemporary Roman Catholic dogmatic theologians. Mark's understanding of the role of Constantinople was well informed per his sources and his knowledge of the history of the Photian saga was second to none from his own day until Dvornik's thesis c. 1950.

Psychology has a focus on the integration of the unconscious—the process is viewed as essential to the individuation, development, and emancipation of personality. It is argued that this view is one-sided. In order to achieve a balanced view of the Self it is necessary to restore the traditional view of spiritual development, equal to the path “upwards” to divine union  (‘henosis’). The projection of unconscious archetypes does not only serve the purpose of psychological integration—in terms of Neoplatonism it may also serve as vehicle for spiritual ascent.

L’articolo considera i Sermoni sull'Epifania di tre Autori vissuti in epoche diverse, accomunati dall'essere filosofi , teologi e cardinali e dall'aver centrato la propria riflessione sul tema cristologico. Dopo una breve introduzione sul significato della solennità dell’Epifania e sul genere dei “Sermoni”, si prendono in esame quei passi in cui la stella del racconto matteano è esplicitamente nominata. Il simbolo si presta a molteplici interpretazioni anche in riferimento alla Scrittura, al cammino di ricerca della verità, alla risposta al Dio che si rivela a tutti i popoli.

An Stelle eines Abstracts: Ich wurde gebeten, diese Arbeit ins Internet zu stellen, und folge dieser Bitte mit einigen Bedenken. Ich stimme zwar den meisten darin enthaltenen Untersuchungen und Schlussfolgerungen noch zu, aber durchaus nicht allen. Dies betrifft besonders die Ausführungen zur Psychoanalyse. Meine Sicht dazu hat sich in den Jahren seit der Veröffentlichung deutlich geändert, und ich würde psychoanalytische Konzepte heute nicht mehr als Grundlage für eine Erklärung, sondern nur noch als weiteres Beispiel für die in der Arbeit beschriebenen Phänomene heranziehen. Die Arbeit wurde 1994 veröffentlicht und ist also nicht mehr ganz neu. Sie entstand aus Gesprächen mit Physikern und der darauffolgenden Lektüre wissenschaftlicher und populärwissenschaftlicher Texte zur Quantenphysik, bei denen ich feststellte, dass die Ausführungen zu den ungewöhnlichen und unerklärbaren Phänomenen deutliche Ähnlichkeiten mit Erklärungen und Interpretationen zu James Joyces enigmatischem Werk Finnegans Wake aufwiesen. In kurzer Zeit stieß ich auf immer mehr Bereiche, in denen sich analoge Erklärungsmuster finden ließen – im Mythos, der vorsokratischen Philosophie, in mystischem Denken, in der Renaissancephilosophie und in der Psychoanalyse. Der Gedanke, dass all diese Bereiche intrinsisch miteinander verbunden sein könnten und möglicherweise sogar jeweils versuchten, eine gemeinsame Wahrheit auszudrücken, erschien mir unsinnig; stattdessen wurde deutlich, dass sich die Analogien auf bestimmte sprachliche und speziell rhetorische Mittel zurückführen ließen, die jeweils wieder herangezogen wurden, um das Undarstellbare sprachlich zu erfassen. Die Arbeit verfolgt dementsprechend den Gedanken, dass der Versuch, Phänomene darzustellen, für die es (noch) keine adäquate Sprache gibt, quasi automatisch zu ähnlichen Darstellungsformen und Erklärungen führt. So mögen die Aussagen mystischen Denkens und der Quantenphysik zwar gelegentlich ähnlich klingen, dies lässt aber nicht auf inhärente inhaltliche Analogien schließen, sondern verweist lediglich darauf, dass sich die darzustellenden Phänomene der Alltagssprache verweigern und daher nicht adäquat dargestellt werden können – worauf sowohl Physiker als auch mystische Denker immer wieder verweisen. Ich möchte an dieser Stelle betonen, dass meine Arbeit keine Aussagen über naturwissenschaftliche Inhalte oder auch naturwissenschaftliches Arbeiten trifft und auch keinesfalls wissenschaftskritische oder relativistische Tendenzen verfolgt. Es geht in den Ausführungen zur Physik lediglich um die auch von Physikern immer wieder geäußerten Probleme, ihre Hypothesen und Theorien zu den bizarren Phänomenen der Quantenphysik aus der Mathematik in eine Sprache zu übersetzen, die von unseren Vorfahren dazu entwickelt wurde, unsere eher begrenzten Sinneseindrücke zu kommunizieren und unser Alltagsleben zu bewältigen. Allerdings ließe sich evtl. der Schluss ziehen, dass das gehäufte Auftreten bestimmter sprachlicher und rhetorischer Muster darauf verweist, dass ein Prozess der Theoriebildung noch nicht abgeschlossen ist und die jeweiligen Phänomene noch keine ausreichende Erklärung gefunden haben.

This third to last work of Nicolas of Cusa (1401-1464) has been best summarized by the renown German Cusa scholar Josef Koch as Cusa's “religious last will”. Here Cusa pedagogically summarizes the insights of his life in a letter to the novice Nicolas of Bologna, whom he had clothed in the monastic habit of a renown monastery just a few days before this letter was written. The young man tragically died a few months after these events and Cusa died just about a year later, but the letter and the wisdom within was preserved in Italian archives until it was recovered in 1949 and published in 1955. Any thinker, young as old, will benefit from Cusa's considerations about the fundamental nature of the relationship between man and his creator, between the power of intelligence and the power of belief, between seeking praise and giving praise and between free will and corruption. Never before translated into English, this publication closes an important gap in the works of Cusa available to an english speaking audience.

Forse non fa onore all'autore cui è intestato il Congresso e che vanta all'attivo tante opere di ampio respiro sui più importanti argomenti che in una relazione ci si soffermi proprio su quelle che devono chiamarsi 'opere minori' o forse nemmeno così, dal momento che si tratta di appunti di lavoro, annotazioni e pensieri sparsi. Inoltre il materiale cui mi riferisco risale in definitiva alla terza decade del Quattrocento, alla giovinezza e agli anni della formazione di Niccolò Cusano (1401-1464), ben prima che la sua carriera ecclesiastica -insieme alla configurazione intellettuale e spiritualespiccassero il volo verso più alte vette.

Quest’opera è stata resa liberamente disponibile al pubblico dall’autore, in occasione dei 550 anni dalla morte del cardinale Nikolaus Kriffs da Kues (latinizzato Niccolaus Cusa- nus) avvenuta a Todi l’11 agosto 1464.
E’ un tributo alla sua elevatissima visione di non-dualità, un tentativo di amplificare le sue parole di verità, rivolte a tutti gli interessati a conoscere e comprendere meglio la natura unitaria dell’esistenza ed il ruolo dell’uomo in essa.
Che possa essere di ispirazione ai cuori puri e alle menti libere.

Nonostante la giovane età della rivista -giravano, ancora, i fascicoli delle sole prime due annate -, sorprendentemente vasta fu, da subito, la risposta degli studiosi di più varia formazione: archeologi, medievisti, modernisti e contemporaneisti. Nicolaus Cusanus, canon lawyer, Catholic cardinal, and arguably the most innovative philosopher-theologian of the fifteenth century, remains a puzzling intellectual figure with his paradox-centered philosophical works which, after a century of focused scholarly attention, still divide commentators on the issue of how to place them in the intellectual context of his time. Given the closely-knit intellectual-artistic milieu of early Renaissance Italy, to which Cusanus has strong connections, scholars have recently taken up the task of connecting Cusanus’ thought with ideas expressed in contemporary Renaissance artworks. This thesis develops an argument for such a connection, focusing on Masaccio’s 1427/28 fresco The Trinity, itself most likely a collaborative work between an innovative artist (Masaccio), a painter and trained theologian (Alessio Strozzi) and an educated humanist and artist (Brunelleschi).
First, Cusanus’ philosophical method in De Docta Ignorantia and contemporary writings is examined and a novel formulation of it is proposed, able to reconcile the seemingly contradictory features of this complex treatise by the systematization of multiple levels of paradox building upon each other. Then, the artistic technique of linear perspective, newly-invented at the time, is investigated and found to provide the crucial intellectual link, as uniquely suited for representing a systematic progression through levels of paradox. Finally, Masaccio’s Trinity is examined and the features of its systematic, perspectivally informed treatment of its subject matter (the same as Cusanus’ own subject: the doctrines of the Christian tradition) are investigated. The artwork and Cusanus’ treatise are found to have in common a fundamental paradox-centered method for systematizing the contents of the tradition, which places them both within a well established Christian tradition of thought about paradox. In accordance with recent developments in the literature, this is proposed as a solution to the long-standing issue of placing Cusanus within his intellectual context.

The focus of this essay is on C.G. Jung's reception and appropriation of Cusa's concept of the coincidence of opposites. The coincidence of opposites is a key to understanding Jung's psychology. Jung's use of Cusa is a case study in how he adopts and subverts historical resources to build his own theory. The paper is written from the perspective of Jungian studies and is not a comparison of the use of the concept by the two writers.

Il contributo consiste in una analisi e commento della prima sezione del De docta ignorantia di Nicola Cusano (capp. I-XVI), dedicata ai concetti di precisione matematica e di uguaglianza. Il saggio offre la possibilità di ripercorrere la teoria della conoscenza di Cusano, laddove l'impossibilità per la ragione di giungere ad una mens-ura precisa dell'oggetto da conoscere non si trasforma in una mera cultura del limite, bensì la filosofia negativa diviene base per la mistica. In altri termini l'obiettivo specifico del saggio è rilevare come il metodo della dotta ignoranza apra alla conoscenza dell'infinito proprio nel momento in cui essa nega ogni conoscenza razionale precisa. La matematica diviene dunque il fondamento su cui far leva per innalzare la propria mente (transferre) verso la conoscenza simbolica di Dio, nel medesimo solco tracciato da Dionigi e dalla tradizione della mistica speculativa.

The example of the word ‚Sünde‘ shows how medieval etymologizing, which is related to allegorism, provides information about the (metaphorical) ideas which were connected with this concept. Differences between various authors and works are revealed, allowing the development of approaches to an interpretation which demonstrate the usefulness of a combination of etymology and (historical) metaphorology.

De pace fidei is certainly one of cardinal Cusanus’s most famous and most read texts. It has received various interpretations and even today scholars do not agree unanimously on certain crucial aspects of Cusanus’s position. Indeed, although twentieth-century historiography seems to agree on De pace fidei’s distance from the modern, illuministic ideal of tolerance, the same does not apply to the evaluation of the role of Christianity in relation to the sharp and synthetic expression, «one religion in a variety of rites», which effectively sums up Cusanus’s proposal. According to the writer of this piece, the only way to understand the De pace fidei is to read the work and try to reconstruct its contents by collocating them in the wider context of the cardinal’s philosophical speculation: Cusanus’s position towards interfaith dialogue can only be fully grasped if it is thought of in the wider  context of his philosophy. The dialectic between the One and the many, and that between the uniqueness of truth and the variety of its expressions, are the speculative bases of the work. In order to establish interfaith and intercultural dialogue, Cusanus wisely combines both the negative dimension of the hidden God, and the positive dimension of the plurality and variety of religious creeds. Both aspects – the ulteriority of God and the plurality of his expressions – combine in order to build peace based on faith. Dialogue is not accidental in the search for the peaceful coexistence of different religions; rather, it is an essential element of the search for and investigation of the divine truth, as well as of one’s personal and  communal faith and religious perspective.

Il testo tenta di individuare, attraverso un'indagine storico-filosofica e teoretica, le linee di sviluppo fondamentali della tradizione coagulantesi nel termine "perennis philosophia", coniato da Agostino Steuco intorno alla metà del Cinquecento, ma già operante, seppur sotto altre vesti, perlomeno a partire dal platonismo fiorentino. La prima parte, a carattere prettamente teoretico, analizza alcuni elementi critici della modernità, per poi mostrare come il concetto di filosofia perenne, nella sua complessità, possa fornire un orizzonte ermeneutico adeguato per affrontare tale crisi. La seconda parte svolge la storia del concetto di "perennis philosophia", cercando di individuare le sue origini remote nel neoplatonismo tardo-antico. La terza, infine, affronta nel dettaglio tre autori fondamentali per comprendere a fondo il concetto: Niccolò Cusano, Pico della Mirandola, Giordano Bruno.

L’occasione dell’anniversario di Pienza come patrimonio culturale dell’UNESCO spinge a interrogarsi di nuovo sull’irripetibile contesto intorno a Enea Silvio Piccolomini, in questo caso dal punto di vista della storia delle idee tradotte in esperienza artistica e visiva (cfr. la sezione: «Una città come libro aperto e come teatrale messa in scena di un’idea»). I temi e l’obiettivo principale: l’uso della matematica come strumento gnoseologico ed euristico, al tempo stesso con una forte componente simbolica; un percorso che accoglie la dimensione aperta e ulteriore come sfida intellettuale che non si accontenta dei risultati acquisiti. Si considera la sinergia di alcune fra le menti più acute dell’epoca (Alberti, Francesco Patrizi, Cusano) che ripensano il metron per una società in grande trasformazione. Intorno alla metà del Quattrocento si diedero le condizioni di possibilità per un dibattito radicale sulle regole, sui fondamenti che normano l’azione individuale e collettiva, il tempo dell’uomo (calendario), la scena urbana e il paesaggio, fino all’ambito religioso e al dialogo interreligioso, pur rimanendo la consapevolezza che riguardo a certe questioni ne va di una sorta di «quadratura del cerchio», intesa come metafora di un obiettivo raggiungibile solo per approssimazione. Imprescindibile e richiesta è comunque  l’interazione del singolo («Luce ed ombra – L’occhio e la conversione»).

The term "patron saint" is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "[a] saint chosen or regarded as a protector of or intercessor for a person, place, occupation, etc." 1 And, indeed, searching for the term "patron saint" on Google, or browsing the related indices of printed dictionaries of saints, results in long and varied lists of categories that a saint can patronize. The list under the letter "A" on catholic.org, for example, begins with AIDS care-givers, AIDS patients, Abandoned children, Abbeville (France), Abdominal pains, Abingdon (England), Abortion (protection against), Abruzzi (region of Italy), Academies (Roman Catholic), Acadians (Cajuns), Accountants and so on. 2 The length and variety of such lists creates the impression that almost everything has a patron saint (or even more than one), and that patronage is quite a versatile relationship that can extend to a wide range of categories, including cities, regions, ethnic groups, organizations, professions, social conditions, and diseases. The connection between saints and patronage is, of course, as old as their cult itself. But such all-encompassing lists are fundamentally a-historical. It is not that some of the items-like AIDS patients or Cajuns-cannot be pinned down to particular historical periods, but such lists tend to conceal the historical development of the concept and phenomenon of saintly patronage itself. This paper focuses on one specific kind of relationship between saints and their worshippers, which I will call auxiliary patronage-patronage of people in need of help to survive a calamity, recover from an illness or resolve a more mundane problem like finding lost objects. The holy men and women who specialized in such particular forms of assistance will be called helper saints or holy helpers. The book De pace fidei by Nicholas of Cusa (†1464) contains a philosophical and political proposal that is still useful in order to illuminate the path of Christians in the encounter with other religions, as indicated in the conciliar declaration Nostra Aetate. Cusano believes that the peace of faith can only be realized starting from a religious renewal of Christianity, which must become welcoming and inclusive, and from the recomposition of unity with the Greek Church of Constantinople.

I saggi qui raccolti affrontano in un ampio spazio diacronico
– dal XI secolo fino alla prima metà del XVII – questioni legate
alla magia naturale in Europa. Essi toccano diverse aree geografiche
e linguistiche e si avvalgono del contributo di specialisti di
discipline del mondo medievale arabo, ebraico e latino, nonché di
storici del pensiero della prima età moderna. I testi magici offrono
un terreno particolarmente proficuo per una ricerca attenta
non solo alle fonti ma anche alle trasformazioni teoriche. Nell’accettare
tutta la complessità di una categoria storiografica come
quella di magia, gli autori intendono valorizzare quelle differenti
costellazioni teoriche che si ritrovano in aree apparentemente
lontane tra di loro, risalendo a tradizioni testuali comuni, ma
registrando anche cambiamenti lessicali e variazioni concettuali.

SINOSSI. C’è una traiettoria, spesso carsica, della filosofia moderna, che recupera istanze del pensiero tardoantico e medievale per assegnare alla phantasia (o imaginatio) un ruolo determinante nella produzione del ragionamento filosofico e scientifico. Non solo una facoltà conoscitiva e non meramente riproduttiva, ma quella facoltà che per il fatto di proiettarsi potenzialmente all’infinito, sfonda i confini di un mondo chiuso e apre la prospettiva del ‘soggetto teoretico’ su un universo infinito, o meglio, su uno spazio ideale proteso verso un punto all’infinito. I teorici dell’arte del Quattrocento, Cusano, Leibniz, Wolff e Kant sono solo alcune delle tappe di questa traiettoria, ciascuna a proprio modo esemplare di una funzione immaginativa capace di potenziare la ricchezza e la flexibilitas dello spazio mentale e di portare il sapere umano a forzare continuamente i propri limiti. Su di esse si concentra questo lavoro con l’intento di ricostruire, sulle linee di una Kulturwissenschaft, l’articolata genealogia di quella funzione dell’anima cieca eppure indispensabile (l’immaginazione) senza la quale, per Kant, non sarebbe possibile avere alcuna conoscenza.

Unlike the commentaries on Plato's Timaeus and on Boethius's Consolatio phlosophiae, medieval exegesis of Boethius's De arithmetica has seldom been subjected to comprehensive and systematic enquiry. Inhabiting the shifting boundary between philosophy and history of science, the De arithmetica itself has been neglected by most medievalists. Yet, from the Carolingian renaissance onward, when the scholarly curriculum came to be based on the seven liberal arts, Boethius's work soon became a canonical text for the study of arithmetic. Indeed, the growing interest in it during the twelfth century is attested by the large number of surviving commentaries in manuscript.

The commentary on the De arithmetica preserved in Stuttgart, Württembergische Landesbibliothek, Cod. math. 4° 33 and edited here for the first time can be securely attributed to Thierry of Chartres. It belongs to a phase when the Chartrian master's interests were mainly directed toward the liberal arts. We can also discern in Thierry's commentary on the De arithmetica themes and problems developed in his Tractatus de sex dierum operibus and more elaborately in his commentaries on Boethius's Opuscula sacra. Indeed, the discovery of this commentary on the De arithmetica might legitimately be said to clarify not only the more intractable passages in the theological writings but also to illuminate Thierry's philosophical project as a whole. At the heart of that vision is a developing trend in twelfth-century philosophy that places number and proportion at the heart of the physical cosmos. In this profoundly 'mathematical Platonism,' all things are based on number and follow the rule of number; or, to quote Thierry himself, “creatio numerorum, rerum est creatio.”

Wie kaum ein zweiter spätmittelalterlicher Denker dient Nikolaus von Kues der modernen Kunstgeschichte als einer der zentralen Ideenlieferanten zu einer möglichen Kunsttheorie am Beginn der Frühen Neuzeit. Der Streit, ob – und wie viel – Einfluss er auf die Kunst und die Künstler seiner Zeit ausübte, beschäftigt die historischen Bildwissenschaften lange. Während diese Diskussion meist anhand prominenter Beispiele der Malerei (wie Dürers Münchner Selbstbildnis) geführt wird, ist das Augenmerk in diesem Beitrag verstärkt auf die Skulptur im kurtrierischen Raum gerichtet. Auch hier können künstlerische Formfindungen auf Grundgedanken des berühmten Theologen zurückgeführt werden. Welches Kunstverständnis man um 1500 an der Mosel annehmen darf, wird so beispielhaft diskutiert.
