Desde el punto de vista de la tecnología el inicio del Paleolítico medio se caracterizó por la aparición del Modo técnico 3. La aparición de este Modo técnico tuvo lugar en Europa hace alrededor de 300 ka. El paso del Modo 2 al Modo 3 fue un proceso gradual de cambio tecnológico, de manera que la aparición del Modo 3 no implicó la desaparición del Modo 2. Durante el Pleistoceno medio final coexistieron en Europa grupos que practicaban un Modo 3 inicial y grupos que continuaban utilizando una tecnología de Modo 2. El registro arqueológico de los niveles superiores del yacimiento de Gran Dolina puede contribuir a conocer mejor el proceso de transición entre estos dos Modos técnicos. En otros yacimientos europeos, como Orgnac 3 y La Micoque 3, se observa un fenómeno similar. Para algunos investigadores las semejanzas entre el Modo 2 y el Modo 3 a nivel conceptual son más signficativas que las diferencias, y por lo tanto piensan que no es conveniente marcar límites entre estos dos Modos técnicos. En realidad, el Modo 3 no implicó la aparición de grandes innovaciones técnicas, sino que se caracterizó por la mayor utilización de algunos métodos de talla ya identificados en conjuntos del Modo 2. En este sentido, destaca la progresiva generalización de métodos de producción de Bases Positivas con predeterminación de su morfología final. También hay una tendencia hacia una mayor estandarización en el tamaño y la morfología de los artefactos. La novedad tecnológica más significativa a nivel conceptual fue la aparición de los instrumentos compuestos (artefactos enmangados). No obstante, la tecnología lítica de Modo 3 es solamente un aspecto del Paleolítico medio. La tímida aparición de una serie de elementos como el control del fuego, la utilización de un lenguaje articulado, las manifestaciones simbólicas relacionadas con la muerte, señalan un incremento de la complejidad en el comportamiento humano hace entre 400 y 300 ka. En ese momento se gestó el origen el Paleolítico medio. Uno de esos elementos fue el cambio tecnológico que se manifiestó en la transición del Modo 2 al Modo 3. Por lo tanto, este cambio tecnológico es un aspecto que forma parte de un proceso global de creciente complejidad en el comportamiento humano.

Resumen: Este texto expone los resultados del primer proyecto de investigación sobre
el registro del Paleolítico Inferior y Medio existente en las tres regiones naturales de la
Provincia de Cuenca (Centro de España): Alcarria, Serranía y Mancha. Mediante
campañas de prospección y excavación en diferentes términos municipales se han
detectado decenas de yacimientos, tomando de ellos materiales propios de los modos de
tecnología lítica 1, 2 y 3. Se han obtenido también dataciones absolutas mediante
luminiscencia en los yacimientos excavados, resultando un rango cronológico entre el
millón de años y los 40.000 años de antigüedad, además de realizarse análisis de tipo
tecnológico y traceológio de las piezas.

Abstract: This text shows the results of the first research project about the Lower and
Middle Paleolithic record in the tree natural regions of the Province of Cuenca
(Central Spain): Alcarria, Serranía and Mancha. Through prospection an excavation
campaigns, developed in several municipalities, tens of archaeologic sites were
detected, taking from them a huge volume of Mode 1, 2 and 3 lithic materials. Absolute
dates have been also obtained by luminescence analysis in the excavated sites. We have
a chronologic range between the million year and the 40.000 years old and we did also
technologic and traceologic studies.

Stone artifacts from Sch€ oningen 12 and 13 were examined microscopically to identify residues, wear, and manufacturing traces in order to clarify their possible anthropogenic origins and their function. We present evidence showing that the stone tools were used for working wood and hide and for cutting meat. The results from the use-wear and residue analyses proved complementary in several instances. Suggestive evidence of hafting was observed on a few pieces, which is particularly interesting given the identification of wooden hafts at the site. The positive results of this analysis demonstrate the efficacy and potential of these techniques for Lower Paleolithic sites such as Sch€ oningen.

In the winter of 1909-1910, Palaeolithic material was gathered at the Twydall Chalk Pit, east of Gillingham, Kent, by W.H. Cook and J.R. Killick. Unlike previously reported finds from this site, these were found in the pit and removed from stratified sand that was probably associated with a small river channel. This underlay brickearth and rested directly on Chalk bedrock. The collection has recently been re-identified and reassessed, having passed through the hands of other collectors. The technological characteristics are consistent with Roe's (1968) Group I Acheulean pointed handaxe with cleavers, in which he included Twydall. Recent work (White et al. 2017) has proposed that dated handaxe assemblages belonging to Group I are from deposits belonging to the MIS 8-10 Lynch Hill/Corbets Tey terrace of the Thames or from contemporaneous contexts in other rivers, such as the Medway.

I have been writing about Paleolithic basket weaving technology for 2 years now. In this article, I attempt to show that there was an intermediate period in the development of the technology when an understanding of structure and constructions based on right angle or opposing fibers occurred. This was the crucial breakthrough that eventually would give humans the power to make an almost unlimited number of items both large and small, such as large boats and large houses made out of reeds. It is my contention that it was this key technology that led to the rise of civilization. In previous articles, I have shown that basket weaving technology could have begun in a rudimentary form 2 million years ago with the creation of random weave basketry. About 6 thousand years ago this culminated in the rise of the Sumerian and the Egyptian civilizations. But somewhere in-between the power of right angle and opposing fiber structure was discovered which then opened the door to this versatile technology. The Lower Paleolithic site at Terra Amata in Nice France provides ample evidence that suggests this transition from random weave basket technology to modern regular basket weaving had occurred by 300 ka with hominins such as Homo erectus. In this article, I list that evidence and argue that it suggests an advanced form of basket weaving had already taken place.

The main focus of this investigation is the lithic and bone artifacts from the Middle Pleistocene site of Bilzingsleben (Thuringia, Germany), especially their traces of use. As a result, many traces both on lithic artifacts and faunal remains can be presented. While the traces on the lithic assemblage allow comparative studies with other European Pleistocene sites, the osteological material offers an exceptional discovery. Microscopic investigations of three bone fragments indicate deliberate engravings. The data strengthen the thesis that Bilzingsleben shows clear evidence for a non-utilitarian activity of Homo erectus bilzingslebenensis (Vlcek 1978). These objects confirm the importance of the Bilzingsleben site for the questions of
early human culture.

The background for the comprehensive introduction is given by the site formation concept as formulated by Schiffer (1987). Microscopic traces also reflect the character of the site formation. Key questions include, whether Bilzingsleben displays scenarios of natural raw material accumulation. By screening sediments from the archaeological layers many naturally fractured flints and other northern gravels are found. These observations document a redeposition of terrace material from the late Elster glaciation. In addition, all sizes of local shell limestone occur. Following the discussion of Chapter I, the author concludes that fluvial transport of lithics and bone fragments is the main reason for their accumulation. In accordance with the results of the site formation discussion, it is consistent to focus the microscopic investigation only on sharp edged lithic artifacts. Concerning faunal remains, the main interest is set on the verification of cut marks. The analysis of selected bone fragments provides data for a discussion of the variety of taphonomic modifications. Beside a critical review of the lithic use wear research (Chapter III), several new perspectives and microscopic results are introduced (Chapter IV). Using the technical potential of SEM and Laser scan microscopy, new interpretations are given to the phenomena "polish" and gloss on northern flint. The secondary modification of the flint surface can be shown on archaeological flint tools from the Middle Paleolithic site of Lichtenberg (Lower Saxonia, Germany). While the Laser scan microscope allows the measurement of roughness, a quantitative description is also given for the abrasive effects along the edges of flint tools. Some new investigations were done with SEM on sickle gloss. Last of all, the potential of residue analysis on the example of birch tar as the most important prehistoric hafting material is discussed. Considering the evidence of hafting kit on the surface of one artifact from the site of Neumark-Nord (Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany), the technical possibilities of its investigation are discussed.

Chapter IV presents not only the methodological basis for the investigation of artifacts from Bilzingsleben, but also brings new insight into the discussion of high power analysis in lithic use wear. The evaluation of lithic use wear in the Bilzingsleben inventory (Chapter V) shows clear evidence for correlations between the functionality of tools and their direction of motion. The database connects morphological characteristics of tools with micro-chipping and abrasive effects along the working edges. Surface polishing is in general overlaid by post-depositional modifications. The Bilzingsleben record displays a correlation between use wear traces of the working of hard organic materials and the accumulation of wooden remains. In addition to Bilzingsleben, the author conducts lithic use wear analyses on three additional Middle Paleolithic assemblages. In conclusion there are some common characteristics for the travertine embedded sites of Bilzingsleben, Tata and Vértesszölös on the one hand, and short time hunting bases like Neumark-Nord and Wallertheim on the other hand. All sites with SiO2 material display a typical edge angle spectrum of tool types in correlation with their main direction of motion.

The second theme of this investigation is bone objects and their surface modifications. A methodological discussion presents both observation of butchery activities and technical experiments to examine the variety of cut marks according to different kinds of lithic working edges. The focus is set on morphometric dimensions of cutting profiles, such as the wall angle and depth. Comparing the profiles of traces on some bone artifacts from Bilzingsleben, clear evidence of their cutting character can be shown. Beside the three artifacts with non-utilitarian cut marks, several bigger faunal remains document cutting traces including "ad hoc" working platforms. The few objects with anthropogenic modifications must be differentiated from the large number of scratches caused by fluvial redeposition or trampling. A third group of a few objects displays tooth marks. Their microscopic profile can be documented, in connection with typical morphological features. In addition there are many bones that display gnawing marks by carnivores. Several faunal remains with potential cut marks from Wallertheim (Rheinhessen, Germany) and Stránská skála (Moravia, Czech Republic) were investigated. Two bones from Wallertheim display cut marks, while the bovid sacrum from Stránská skála preserves no anthropogenic traces but does exhibit
tooth marks.

The investigation of the assemblage from Bilzingsleben helps to define the activities of Middle Pleistocene human beings at the site. In the context of the general site formation, it can be concluded that there is no evidence for a permanent settlement at the site. Instead, there is a high probability for one or more short-term occupations, when people some 400,000 years ago came and looked for specific raw materials, like wood, bones and maybe also sinew, antler and ivory. This answer can and must be sufficient from our today's point of view.

Jh. zurückreichen, konnte eine intensive Forschung zum Paläolithikum eßt fast 100 Jahre später mit der Entdeckung des Fundplatzes Neuwied-Gönnersdorf und der Wiederaufnahme der Grabungen auf dem Martinsberg in eine neue entscheidende Phase der Erforschung des füihen Menschen und seiner Siedlungsstellen an Rhein und Mosel treten Weitere Fundplätze wie Urbar, Ariendorf, Mülheim-Kärlich, Kettig, Niederbieber, Miesenheim, Plaidter Hummerjch und viele andere kamen in kürzester Zeit httlz\ und zeigen außergewöhnlich gut erhaltene Bef'unde. Grund hierfilr ist die geologische Situation der Mittehheinischen Senke. Durch die Naturkatastrophe der Gasexplosion des Laacher See Ausbruches wurde die gesamte Landschaft durch vulkanische Aschen bis zu l2 m Mächtigkeit überdeokt. Daher wurden die vorangegangenen Siedlungsspuren der Kultuntufe der Jäger und Sammler nahezu ,,versiegelt und konserviert". Erst jm Zuge des industriellen Bimsabbaues wurden die noch weitestgehend im ungestörten Zusammenhang angetroffenen Befunde aufgedeckt. Wegen dieser günstigen Voraussetzungen war es für das Amt Koblenz der archäologischen Denkmalpflege nur sinnvoll, in Zusammenarbeit zunächst mit dem Forschungsbereich Altstejnzeit des Institutes für Ur-und Frühgeschichte der Universität Köln einen Schwerpunkt in der Paläolithikumsforschung in der Region Mittehhein zu bilden und mit namhaften Mitteln der Archäologischen Denkmalpflege Koblenz, später ergänzt durch Gelder der Stiftungen von Fritz Thyssen, Gerda Henkel und Volkswagen, sowie durch Spenden von Privatpersonen und sonstigen Vereinigungen und lnstitutionen, wurde die wissenschaftlichen Grr.rndlagen erarbeitet und die Voraussetzungen geschaffen, fur einen überegionalen Antrag zu einem interdisziplinären Schwerpunktprogramm bei der deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft, der ab 1988 zu dem Langzeitprogramm der DFG ,,Quartär am Mittelrhein" fihten. Darin arbeiteten außer Archäolo gen, Geologen und Vulkanologen auch Paläobotaniker und Paläontologen zusammen. Entsprechende wissenschaftliche Publikationen wurden bereits vorgelegt oder sind noch in Arbeit und haben so das Mittelrheingebiet auch fiir die ältere Menschheitsgeschichte als eine dicht besiedelte Landschaft intemational bekannt gemacht. Kajian arkeologi di Lembah Mansuli, Lahad Datu, Sabah Ielah menemukan
dua tapak Paleolitik, iaitu Gua Samang Buat dan tapak terbuka Mansuli. Isu utama
di Gua Samang Buat ialah berapakah kedalaman sedimen di dalamgua ini selepas
ekskavasi empat meter masih belum menemui lantai gua. Manakala isu utama di
tapak terbuka Mansuli ialah interpretasi paleoalamnya yang dikatakan bersekitaran
tasik kuno. Maka, kaedah geoftzik telah digunakan untuk cuba menjawab isu ini.
Penggunaan kaedah geofizik di Lembah Mansuli telah berjaya membantu
mengenalpasti ketebalan sedimen di Gua Samang Buat dan membantu membina
paleoalam untuk Lembah Mammli. Ketebalan sedimen gua di Gua Samang Buat
yang boleh di' ekskavasi ialah 12 m di Gua 1 dan 5 m di Gua 2. Data ini
mencadangkan secara relatifberkemungkinan kita boleh menemui lapisan berusia
138,000 tahun dahulu di Gua Samang Buat berdq~rkan usia 46,000 untuk
kedalaman 4 m. Kajian gwifizik di Lembah Mansuli pula mendedahkan wujud
tasik kuno dan sa/iran sungai kuno di Lembah Mansuli. Malah daripada survei
tersebut, ianya juga mendedahkan kemungkinan wujud dua teres tasik kuno. Modelanomali graviti dan magnet juga turut menghasilkan hentuk tasik.

12 original articles concerning the Paleolithic development of woven-fiber technology and its use in early civilizations. This 300+ page eBook is illustrated with over 250 photographs and pictures. More than 100 years ago Gustave Chauvet wrote that he believed basketry and simple weaving were present in the Upper Paleolithic sites he had studied. Yet it took almost that long to convince experts that this was the case. The discovery of irrefutable evidence in the form of impressions of weaving in clay provided the proof. Now it is also clear that basket-weaving and textile-weaving were not incompatible with the hunter-gatherer Paleolithic lifestyle and did not require the sedentary settled Neolithic way of life as had been assumed. This opens up the idea that basket-weaving or woven-fiber technology as I have called it, could have begun even in the Lower Paleolithic, millions of years ago. In these 8 articles, I outline how basketry could have begun perhaps two million years ago and then how it could have developed until the rise of the great civilizations of Sumer and Egypt which depended on this technology. I include ideas about how to find indirect evidence of basket-weaving in the Paleolithic era.

Paleolithic artifacts collected in the course of archaeological and geological surveys at particular islands of the NE Mediterranean have given birth to arguments for seaward Pleistocene dispersals. The consecutive implications for the seafaring abilities of archaic hominins have inevitably provoked an ongoing debate. The total lack of paleoanthropological evidence and, in most cases, the absence of a secure stratigraphic context leaves us with the only other pertinent tool of analysis, the stone tools. Preliminary reports presenting lithic collections from the islands have been published since at least the middle of the previous century, yet a coherent and critical review of the evidence has hitherto not been attempted. In the light of new paleogeographic reconstructions of the Aegean region, the already published collections are in this paper reviewed and evaluated in terms of their classifications and proposed cultural and chronological attributions and discussed in relation to the arguments for or against Pleistocene sea-crossings. Despite the scarcity of the evidence and the many problems associated with their documentation , context or interpretations, the lithic collections do provide specific information regarding the earliest sea-crossings in the region. Based on the available evidence, the majority of the artifacts collected from sites on islands that were most likely insular during parts of the Pleistocene have Middle Paleolithic technological and typological affinities, therefore an association with the Neanderthals is implied and the possible marine routes are proposed. Yet further research is needed in order to better appreciate the Greek Lower Paleolithic record, thus reevaluate the arguments for Lower Paleolithic sea-crossings in the Aegean.

The terms Lower Palaeolithic and Middle Palaeolithic represent research constructs within which cultural evolution and prehistoric hominin behaviours can be studied, with the transition usually understood as marking a watershed in our evolution: an adaptation with a million-year record of success that gives way to something new. The interpretation of the Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian technocomplex is usually understood as a period of cultural stasis that extends over much of Africa and Eurasia, principally associated with Homo erectus. Those innovations that can be observed occur widely separated from one another in space and time. Yet a closer and more detailed examination of the Middle Pleistocene records from East Africa, southern Africa, Europe and the Levant reveals significant variation in cultural repertoires. A kind of paradox emerges, in which an Old World Lower Palaeolithic, apparently lacking an overall dynamic of distinctive and directed change in terms of cumulative variation over time, nevertheless culminates in a transition which sees the universal appearance of the Middle Palaeolithic. The two main hypotheses that have been advanced to explain the global transition, which happens essentially synchronously, appear mutually exclusive and contradictory. One view is that altered climatic-environmental constraints enabled and encouraged an 'Out-of-Africa' dispersal (or dispersals) of a new type of genus Homo. This cultural replacement model has been challenged more recently by the alternative hypothesis of accumulating but unrelated and temporally non-linked regional, and in fact potentially autochthonous, processes. The Levant, by virtue of its position bridging Africa and Eurasia (thus being the region into which any out-of-Africa groups would have had first to disperse into), must be seen as a critical region for assessing the relative merits of these competing hypotheses.

Archaic Homo refers to the human populations or species that were chronologically and anatomically intermediate between Homo erectus and modern Homo sapiens. Archaic Homo can be further subdivided into two chronological groupings, Early and Late Archaics. Anatomically, Archaic Homo exhibit larger braincases than H. erectus as well as greater body mass, among other features. Archaic Homo had controlled and regular use of fire and colonized temperate regions of Eurasia for the first time. In some regions, Archaic Homo populations appear to have directly contributed to the ancestry of modern humans, while the evidence for this in other regions is limited. The overall pattern of evolutionary relationships among Archaic Homo, as elucidated by the available fossil and paleogenomic evidence, indicates that not all archaics and modern humans were reproductively isolated from each other.

Jihovýchodně od Tikovic a západně od silnice do Syro vic leží rozsáhlé návrší zvané Tikovický kopec (kóta 314), jež poskytuje ojedinělé a značně rozptýlené nálezy patinované industrie. Indikují krátkodobé návštěvy v různých dobách v blízkosti bohaté oikumeny osídlení ze starší fáze mladého paleolitu. Vedle publikovaných nálezů (Oliva 1989) jsem tu již v 70. letech minulého století našel malý archaický hrot (obr. 13: 1) a zlomek jiného nástroje a úštěpu, vše z rohovců typu Krumlovský les. Nové nálezy P. Šmacha přidaly čepelo vitý úštěp s šikmou jemnou retuší z rohovce typu Krumlov ský les, variety II (obr. 13: 2), zbytek pazourkového jádra, 2 úštěpy a 1 zlomek. Ze starších nálezů je nejvýraznější vysoké škrabadlo (Oliva 1989, 21).

Over the last 150 years, the Paleolithic era was divided into the Lower, Middle and Upper Paleolithic. This scheme is an arbitrary research construct that confounds chronological, behavioral, and evolutionary meanings. Transitions between these discrete units, and in particular the Lower/Middle Paleolithic transition, received lesser attention.
At present, the Lower/Middle Paleolithic transition is still depicted as a worldwide change from biface production to Levallois technology, similar to the way it has been perceived in the initial stages of research. Some key questions remain open for further inquiry: What changed technologically and typologically beyond those guide fossils? What is the geographical variation of this global change(s)? Did
changes occur as a result of autochthonous developments in each region or by a diffusion wave (s)? What is the societal process(es) that promoted this evolutionary change?
In this paper, I explore the techno-typological variations (reduction sequences and tool kits) in Europe
north of the Pyrenees and how these traits pattern diachronically and spatially in the interval of MIS 9-7, the period during which the transition between Lower and Middle Paleolithic is suggested to occur. The first step will be to describe the range of behaviors that existed during each MIS. The presentation of those variants will track the decision-making processes within reduction sequences. The technotypological variants will be studied in relation to their relative abundance within each assemblage. Then, I will attempt to estimate if observed changes in those traits resulted from a continuous processes or whether the record constitutes of segmented local histories.

Les données relatives aux techniques lithiques prouvent que les artefacts en question sont taillés par différentes occupations humaines dans une époque qui se situe entre la fin du paléolithique ancien et le début du paléolithique moyen. L'existence des bifaces et des éclats laminaires non-levallois permettrait de conclure à une similitude entre les trouvailles de Dülük et celles de la Syrie datant de la même époque.

"Les recherches menées en Belgique depuis 1829 ont mis au jour d’importantes traces du Paléolithique moyen, majoritairement sous forme de témoins lithiques, parfois accompagnés de vestiges enmatière dure animale porteurs d’une action anthropique (ossements brûlés, découpés ou fracturés, retouchoirs). Certains de ces sites bénéficient de données paléoenvironnementales. Les restes humains relatifs à cette période sont quant à eux beaucoup plus rares, quoique le karst du Bassin mosan belge compose une des zones européennes majeures en la matière, tant sur le plan historique que par l’intérêt des sites qui permettent le développement de programmes interdisciplinaires modernes.

Dans le cadre d’une thèse de doctorat (Di Modica, 2010), dont cet article constitue une version légèrement résumée et actualisée de l’un des aspects, un inventaire des sites du Paléolithique ancien a été réalisé grâce surtout à une recherche bibliographique à visée exhaustive. à ce jour, 442 points de découvertes rapportables au Paléolithique ancien ont été identifiés sur l’ensemble du territoire belge (fig. 1). Cet aspect essentiellement livresque de l’investigation constitue la limite de cet inventaire puisque les données non publiées et dont nous n’avons pas eu connaissance y ont échappé. Le décompte s’appuie notamment sur des inventaires partiels réalisés auparavant et a pour vocation de s’enrichir avec le temps.

Un minutieux travail de collecte directement dans les réserves des musées et dans les collections d’amateurs, notamment, s’imposerait afin de compléter le panorama. Par cet inventaire, nous souhaitions présenter la totalité de la documentation disponible car les sites principaux ne recouvrent pas nécessairement toute la variabilité des productions lithiques. Ainsi, certaines pièces isolées, habituellement non prises en compte en raison d’un potentiel informatif limité, revêtent-elles parfois un intérêt particulier en fonction de la nature du matériau dans lequel elles sont façonnées, de leur contexte chronologique ou de leurs caractéristiques techno-typologiques."

WSTęP Jest ona jednak poświęcona przede wszystkim antropogenezie i wszelakim zagadnieniom wynikającym z omawiania tego zjawiska, mogącym pomóc nam w zrozumieniu takich fenomenów jak ludzka kultura, w tym oczywiście kultura prawna. Wierzę, że ta publikacja pomoże w dociekaniach dotyczących określenia momentu w dziejach, w którym pojawiają się tak złożone zjawiska jak podstawy prawa będące immanentną częścią naszego bytu. Mam również nadzieję, że ta książka będzie choć głosem w dyskusji nad istotą człowieczeństwa i kultury ludzkiej. Zdaję sobie sprawę z tego, że wiele tez, które przedstawię w tej książce, może być kontrowersyjnych (zasiewających wątpliwości), ale przecież m.in. to jest niezbędne w dyskursie naukowym. Nie zawsze autor ma rację. Dociekania innych ludzi mogą korygować błędne spojrzenie. roZdZiaŁ i refleksja nad ciągłością kultury ludzkiej Jakiekolwiek opisy społeczeństw uważanych za znajdujące się w stanie dzikości czy anarchii po głębszej analizie wskazują na występowanie złożonych struktur społecznych, których po prostu wcześniej nie zrozumiano 1. "Ludzie prymitywni nie są ani bardziej, ani mniej wolni od swoich tak zwanych cywilizowanych bliźnich. U jednych i u drugich wolności i obowiązki zależą od lokalnych warunków, czyli od zwyczaju" 2. Żyjemy zatem w świecie reguł, których istnienia jesteśmy świadomi i to odróżnia nas od zwierząt. Są to również reguły ograniczające nie tylko nas, zwykłych ludzi, ale i tych, którzy nami kierują, rządzą. Prawo dozwala i ogranicza. Rządy prawa, jeśli rozumiemy je we właściwy sposób, nie znajdują żadnego odpowiednika w świecie pozaludzkim 3. Kolejną aktywnością zawsze obecną w świecie ludzkim jest ta ekonomiczna 4. Ona też odróżnia nas od zwierząt. Działalność ekonomiczna, wytwórcza, pozostawia zwykle najwięcej śladów materialnych (pracownie, kopalnie, piece hutnicze, miejsca gromadzenia odpadów itp.). Określenie, jakie są poszczególne cele ludzkiej działalności, możliwe jest m.in. dzięki badaniom naukowym, a w stosunku do społeczeństw prahistorycznych na pierwszy plan wysuwają się badania archeologów. Czasami podczas tych prac wyłania się nie tylko to, co materialne, ale i to, co musi z tych pozostałości wynikać, choć samo w sobie nie jest zwykłym artefaktem. Jeśli istnieje jakaś jedna historia ludzkości ciągnąca się od jej początków to jest to historia kultury materialnej. Można wykazać jej ciągłość od zarania aż po czasy definiowane jako post-moderna (określenie Bjørnara Olsena). Dzięki temu możliwy jest rozwój archeologii 5 .

For the first time is presented a complete panorama of the current knowledge on the grottoes of Monte Gallo, an area of extraordinary importance for the prehistoric settlement in the area of Palermo. Through a careful cataloguing, which includes references to topographical, morphological aspects, accompanied by graphic and photographic documentation, even historical, and archaeological data, often unpublished, we have got a picture of great interest, which, together with the studies, already published, on Monte Pellegrino and on the other grottoes of the mountains of Palermo, allow us to have a tool for a complete study of the knowledge of the Prehistory of one of the most interesting and rich in rock stretches of the northern coast of Sicily.

Si espongono i dati preliminari di un programma di ricognizioni di superficie mirate all’individuazione di evidenze paleolitiche nel territorio di Altamura. I rinvenimenti si pongono a SO del centro abitato, in un’area a morfologia collinare con modesti rilievi corrispondenti ai terrazzamenti del bacino fluvio-lacustre ‘Matera-Altamura’ in massima parte distribuiti tra 340 e 380 m s.l.m. Non sono disponibili al momento sistematici studi geomorfologici e dati crono-stratigrafici sicuri dell’insieme litico rinvenuto, tuttavia l’analisi preliminare dei materiali ha consentito di individuare tre componenti tecnologiche, riferibili alle fasi inferiore e media del Paleolitico.

SUMMARY - We report the preliminary data about a surface survey in order to recognize paleolithic evidence in Altamura territory. The findings are South West of the populated centre, in a zone of low hills that corrispond to the terraces of Matera-Altamura fluviolacustrine basin, which are mainly placed between 340-380 metres of elevation above sea level. Regular geomorphological studies and sure chronostratigraphic data about the lithic assemblage that has been found are not available at the moment but, thanks to the materials preliminary analysis, we can identify three technological components that are related to the Lower and Middle Paleolithic.
