El trabajo se propone desarrollar sucintamente la notable y poco explorada convergencia entre la doctrina de Spinoza y el taoísmo filosófico chino, tal como Lao Tsé lo inaugurara en el Tao Te King alrededor del siglo V a.C. A fin de iluminar la cuestión es conveniente distinguir los dos grandes “momentos” de la Ética demostrada según el orden geométrico: por un lado, el “momento metafísico”, en el que se despliega la definición de Dios/Substancia como principio ontológico absoluto, único, eterno e infinito, existente en y por sí por la necesidad de su esencia, causa de la esencia y la existencia de la totalidad del universo. Por otro lado el “momento ético”, consecuencia lógica del anterior, ya que la ética sólo tiene sentido para el ser humano como realización metafísica de su ethos particular. Esta realización no puede tener lugar sin un conocimiento adecuado de la potencia singular del hombre, que requiere a su vez el conocimiento de la potencia divina. La noción de conatus (como identificación de potencia y esencia) resulta aquí el nexo clave que habilita el pasaje de un “momento” a otro.
A través de una exposición resumida de la doctrina taoísta intentaremos entonces mostrar que ésta comparte intuiciones fundamentales con el spinozismo en los dos momentos ya señalados. Por una parte, su concepción metafísica del principio ontológico supremo (Tao) es muy similar a la spinoziana; por otra parte, también el taoísmo postula la paridad potencia/naturaleza en su concepto de Virtud (Te). Esto le permite derivar, partiendo de la ontología general, una ética de lo particular (humano), de la misma manera en que lo hiciera Spinoza siglos después.

El concepto de totalidad tal como lo concibe Spinoza nos enfrenta a una suerte de tensión o paradoja. Por un lado, su filosofía se centra en la Substancia única, causa de todo y en la cual todo está contenido, aquello fuera de lo cual no hay nada, o mejor dicho, aquello que no tiene propiamente un afuera. Por otro lado, cuando debe referirse a lo que entiende por totalidad, Spinoza enfatiza sin embargo el carácter negativo e imaginario de dicho concepto: llamamos “totalidad” a lo que se define por un punto de vista exteriorizante, un recorte artificial mediante el cual, fundando imaginarias relaciones de oposición, distinguimos un individuo de otro al precio de arrancarlos a la infinitud que es su verdadera razón y esencia. Así, la paradoja puede formularse como sigue: la Substancia, que sabemos el “Todo” por excelencia, es por eso mismo lo que menos puede llamarse una totalidad – en su absoluta indeterminación no puede ser construida como tal, ni pensada por nosotros como individuo “cerrado”. Hay Todo, pero no es totalizable. ¿Cómo aprehenderlo entonces, si es justamente su carácter de Todo lo que nos veda la aplicación del concepto de totalidad?
Paradoja-tensión sobre la que intentaremos arrojar luz, no tanto para resolverla como para patentizar su perplejidad. Perplejidad fecunda que se refleja en otros dos pensadores, amigo declarado del spinozismo el uno, secreto aliado el otro, enemigos ambos de las ficciones de totalización en el conocimiento y en la vida: me refiero a Lao Tsé y el pensamiento metafísico del Tao Te King, y a Deleuze y su propuesta ontológica en Diferencia y repetición. Entre los tres, una impresión compartida: la del eco de un Todo que se (nos) escapa, pero que sigue siempre ahí, sosteniendo incluso lo que pretende negarlo.

Este trabajo se propone señalar ciertas zonas de resonancia entre la filosofía de Spinoza y el taoísmo filosófico clásico (siglos V-III a.C.), en lo referente a su tratamiento de la virtud. En uno y otro caso encontramos una concepción ético-ontológica en que la virtud se traduce como la espontaneidad de una acción determinada por la propia esencia. Entendida como una potencia innata de acción, la noción de virtud queda así lejos de todo juicio moralizante. En primer lugar, entonces, abordaremos la noción taoísta de De (traducida comúnmente como “virtud”), señalando su lugar en el esquema ontológico y la modalidad en que se manifiesta como ideal espiritual y práctico para el ser humano (el wuwei, “no actuar”). En este sentido cobra importancia la noción de ziran (lo natural o espontáneo, entendido como tendencia innata conferida por el Dao). La conclusión en este punto es que, para el taoísta, la mayor virtud se caracteriza por una acción máxima desde el punto de vista del Dao, y a la vez por una acción mínima desde el punto de vista humano. En segundo lugar, repasaremos brevemente la relación spinozista entre esencia, potencia y virtud, y su articulación con el proyecto ético humano. En este sentido, la máxima virtud y acción posibles para el hombre coinciden con la virtud divina y, por lo tanto, con un cierto “no-hacer” humano. En último lugar, entonces, a partir de lo expuesto señalaremos las principales resonancias y disonancias entre ambos pensamientos.

En un trabajo anterior (“La formulación de la ética en Spinoza y Lao Tsé”) expuse brevemente ciertas afinidades entre las filosofías spinozista y taoísta, tanto en lo referente a sus concepciones ontológicas como a las consecuencias éticas derivadas de éstas. La hipótesis que subyace a este intento de acercamiento entre dos pensamientos aparentemente tan alejados, es precisamente que ambos mantienen un mismo compromiso: la defensa de un proyecto ético de liberación humana que hunde sus raíces en una ontología impregnada por lo Absoluto. Para ello propuse distinguir dos “momentos” conceptuales: un momento metafísico-ontológico (exposición de la estructura de lo real, Dios/Tao), y un momento ético (normas de acción para el modelo ideal de la naturaleza humana, derivadas a partir de su inserción necesaria en aquella estructura).
Este trabajo se propone abordar con mayor detalle el primero de dichos momentos, utilizando como guía la estructura del De Deo propuesta por Pierre Macherey en su Introduction à l’ Ethique de Spinoza. Según Macherey el conjunto de las proposiciones del De Deo puede dividirse, para su exposición, en dos grupos: el primero de ellos versa sobre la Naturaleza de Dios (esto es, sobre la relación entre las nociones de sustancia y atributo y sobre los “propios” de Dios), mientras que el segundo trata la Potencia divina (características y resultados de la acción divina tal como se siguen de su Naturaleza). El recorrido del De Deo comienza entonces por la Sustancia y desemboca en la identidad necesaria entre ésta y los productos de su accionar. Encarar la ontología del Tao Te King siguiendo este modelo expositivo permitirá apreciar sus importantes concordancias con el spinozismo así como sus no menos importantes diferencias. Diferencias que no nos impiden considerar a ambos, Ética  y Tao Te King, como dos libros amigos.

This fourth in a series of articles seeking a better knowledge of the Archangel Michael will be devoted exclusively to the elusive imperative being taught in the school of Michael in our time: to free thought from language.  All of the studies we have taken up in the last three articles have been presented with the intention of cutting through the natural human tendency to trivialize spiritual matters. When we approach a topic from an overly abstract point of view without concretizing our ideas by bringing them down to earth, we trivialize. When our studies survey spiritual scientific ideas handling those ideas with only earthly sentiments and logic, we also trivialize. In both cases we fail to enliven and spiritualize concepts and therefore fail to address our originality and authenticity that can and ought to be developed in the present age of Michael, in which our own independent, spiritualized, thinking and judgment should guide us to a knowledge of truth in reality. The topic of our present study, which is how to develop the ability to free our thinking from language, is presented as a path to authenticity and as a bulwark against trivialization. It is also presented as an impetus towards the collaboration in spiritual work that must begin to develop in our time to produce the universal spiritual understanding that will culminate in the middle of the sixth cultural epoch.

Nuestro texto caracteriza brevemente, en primer lugar, la concepción de la virtud y de los métodos necesarios para alcanzarla propia de la filosofía confuciana. Luego,  hace otro tanto desde el punto de vista de la filosofía taoísta. Por último, a partir de la caracterización que realiza Deleuze de uno de los postulados de la “Imagen dogmática del pensamiento”, retoma los enfoques confuciano y taoísta para interpretar en ellos dos concepciones antagónicas sobre el lugar de la cultura en la formación moral del ser humano. En este sentido, la formulación deleuziana permite redistribuir, entre estas dos vertientes de la filosofía china, las categorías de cultura, método, aprendizaje y saber. Finalmente, y en virtud de una toma de posición en favor de uno de los enfoques presentados, el texto deberá permanecer abierto, tras constatar la futilidad de intentar atrapar algo que jamás se detiene.

This chapter analyses the relationship between words, sounds, and images in Remembering Lao-Tse (Shaving off a Second), a self-portrait produced by the Australian artist Brett Whiteley (1939-1992) in 1967 that features a drawing and a poetic inscription. The synergy of visual and verbal elements informing this artwork is discussed as one of the key aspects of Whiteley's self-depiction. As I argue, words liaise with pictures in defining and expressing the artist’s self.

The analysis of Remembering Lao-Tse focuses on three dimensions: interart, intermodality, and intertextuality. On an interartistic level, the similarities and differences between this self-portrait and Whiteley’s writings will be highlighted. On an intermodal level, the interplay between words and images will be analysed as a crucial aspect of his self-depiction, which entails various media and stimulates multiple sensory and cognitive reactions. On an intertextual level, the relationship between this artwork and a series of literary and pictorial sources will be investigated. From a threefold perspective, it will be argued that in Remembering Lao-Tse verbal and visual elements are related not only through the medium, but also via a series of intra- and extra-textual references, which draw attention to Whiteley’s poetics of excess.

In the light of William T. Mitchell’s Picture Theory (1994), Remembering Lao-Tse is analysed as an ‘imagetext’, namely, a text where words and images coexist and interact. In particular, my analysis is oriented by the translation of Whiteley’s words from English into Italian. This experimental procedure allows me to show how the translation process produces a critical interpretation of a work of art, opening a window on the interdisciplinary encounter between the creative processes inherent in the visual arts and translation theory and practice.

Although significant differences undoubtedly exist between Daoism and Kant’s philosophy, the two systems also have some noteworthy similarities. After calling attention to a few such parallels and sketching the outlines of Kant’s philosophy of religion, this article focuses on an often-neglected feature of the latter: the four guiding principles of what Kant calls an “invisible church” (universality, purity, freedom, and unchangeableness). Numerous passages from Lao Zi’s classic text, Dao-De-Jing, seem to uphold these same principles, thus suggesting that they can also be interpreted as core features of a Daoist philosophy of life. A crucial difference, however, is that members of a Daoist church would focus on contentment, whereas Kantian churches modeled on Christianity (the religious tradition Kant favored) would strive for perfection. The article therefore concludes by considering what a synthesis might look like, if a Kantian church were to be based on a Daoist interpretation of these four fundamental principles.

The digital classroom can impede the cognition necessary for independent learning according to belief and behaviour undermining engagement, health, delivery, participation and curriculum.  Surveys of adolescents, students, teachers and successful users of the digital domain together with neuroscience show that teaching digital literacy and control, through a range of digital, printed and oral cognitive tasks can set the emotions and mood to overcome these impediments to produce the higher order thinking of successful learners.  Transforming successful learners into independent ones in the digital domain is possible by heeding the lessons of moving from oral to printed learning, cognizant of the risks, so as to provide balanced learning that challenges the student’s inhibiting metaphors and teaches how to test information, scaffold the critical thinking skills needed and use self-control strategies.

Abstract:  Modern  life  is  convenient,  efficient  and  comfortable— thanks  to  the  advancement  in  technology  in  the  modern  society.  But  it is  also  problematic,  complicated  and  sometimes  meaningless  and  it breeds  complacency,  greed  and  discord.    So  the  question  that confronts  us  today  is:  how  do  we  live  or  conduct  ourselves  is  modern society  with  all  its  trappings  and  yet  preserve  our  sense  of  dignity and  simplicity?  How  do  we  live  a  life  that  is  comfortable  and meaningful,  efficient  and  contented,  convenient  and  natural?  To  get some  insights  we  turn  to  the  past  and  look  for  some  lessons  from  two important  thinkers  and  masters  from  the  Western  tradition—St. Augustine  and  the  Eastern  tradition—Lao  Tzu.  They  are  two prominent  thinkers  who  came  from  different  cultures,  different religious  orientations  and  times.    The  society  and  time  they  came from  may  be  different  from  ours  but  they  can  still  offer  us  some lessons  how  to  live  a  simple  and  meaningful  life  in  a  modern society.    Lao  Tzu  tells  us  that  we  need  to  go  back  to  nature,  follow  the way  of  the  Tao  and  be  guided  by  the  wu-wei.    St.  Augustine  advices us  that  while  we  are  physical  and  mortal  creatures,  we  need  to rediscover  our  moral  and  spiritual  nature  and  live  according  to  our divine  image.  Indeed  the  wisdom  of  the  past  both  from  the  East  and West can definitely guide us and give us valuable lessons.
