International Students Exchange

Traditionally, internships are viewed as a supervised work practice and experiential learning where student have the opportunity to apply the previously learnt theories from school in real-life situations. Several studies have been written on the benefits of internship programs and explored the perspective of the interns, schools and different organizations as well. Nowadays, an internship abroad is more seen from the students’ point-of-view as an element of „Erasmus lifestyle experience” than gaining useful, practical work experience in the hotel industry.
There any many factors and stakeholders involved that form the experience of the students who participate in internship programs. Internships in any hotel establishments provide a real sense of working and the Erasmus students have to face different adversities such as culture shock, poor remuneration, longer working hours, lack of rapport with the other workers and other sociocultural adaptation difficulties. Thus, these experiences can determine the future career goals of the interns.
The aim of this paper is to explore the impact of different stakeholders on the experience of the students. Implications for the hospitality industry and educational institutions and suggestions for future studies are offered.

[RU, EN ABSTRACT BELOW]Актуальность данного исследования обусловлена ограниченным пониманием механизмов публичной дипломатии, которые активизируются при проведении стипендиальных программ для иностранных студентов странами Восточной Азии, в частности Юж-
ной Кореей. Более того, актуальность темы также определена малой исследованностью роли знаний в механизмах публичной дипломатии. Автор данной статьи рассматривает южнокорейскую стипендиальную программу по обмену иностранными студентами – KOICA Scholarship Program. В данном кейсе анализируется содержание официальных документов, утвержденных Правительством Республики Корея (РК), документов и материалов, публику емых подчиненными Правительству Кореи организациями, проводящими стипендиальные программы для иностранных студентов, а также научные работы по теме дипломатии знаний
и смежным темам. Элементом новизны является то, что для анализа применяется набирающая популярность в мире концепция – дипломатия знаний, которая в русскоязычной научной
сфере практически не использовалась. Также рассматриваются прежде малоисследованные образовательные инструменты публичной дипломатии как корейские стипендиальные про-
граммы. Анализ официальных документов РК показал, что концепция знаний в официальной корейской интерпретации отличается от существующих интерпретаций на Западе (Великобритания, США). Анализ стипендиальной программы показал, что она выполняет не все цели, возлагающиеся Правительством на дипломатию знаний. В частности, Корея успешно транслирует знания о корейской истории и культуре, а также профессиональные знания, в то время как сфера обмена знаниями в рамках данной программы остается неосвоенной. В конце статьи автор приводит ряд практических рекомендаций по улучшению эффективности стипендиальной программы как инструмента дипломатии знаний.

The relevance of this study derives from the limited understanding of the
mechanisms of public diplomacy that are activated when scholarship programs for international students are conducted by East Asian countries, particularly South Korea. Moreover, the relevance of the topic is also determined by the scarcity of research on the role of knowledge in public diplomacy mechanisms. The author of this article analyzes South Korea’s international student exchange scholarship program, the KOICA Scholarship Program. This case study analyzes the contents of official documents adopted by the Government of the Republic of Korea, documents and materials published by subordinate organizations that administer scholarship programs for international students, as well as scholarly papers on the topic of knowledge diplomacy and related
topics. The novelty element is that the concept of knowledge diplomacy, which is gaining popularity worldwide almost has not been used in the Russophone academia, and the studies on South Korean exchange programs as public diplomacy instruments are also poorly represented. The analysis of official documents has shown that the concept of knowledge in the official Korean interpretation differs from the existing academic interpretations accepted in the West (e.g., Great Britain, the United States). Also, the analysis of the scholarship program showed that it only partly complies with the knowledge diplomacy goals assigned by the Government. In particular, through this scholarship, Korea successfully transmits knowledge about Korean history and culture, as well as professional knowledge, while the field of knowledge exchange in the program remains unattained. The author concludes with several practical recommendations on how to improve the effectiveness
of the scholarship program as a tool for knowledge diplomacy.

Los extranjeros pueden ser divididos en distintos grupos: los trabajadores, los matrimonios binacionales, sus hijos, también los diplomáticos y los estudiantes, entre muchos otros. Para el caso surcoreano, los estudiantes de intercambio hoy en día comprenden una población importante de la comunidad extranjera. El aumento en los programas de becas y convenios académicos entre Colombia y Corea del Sur, han sido medios para que estudiantes colombianos interactúen con personas coreanas, creando nuevas redes y coyunturas para el intercambio cultural. Su condición de población flotante dentro de la categoría de migrantes les permite vivir experiencias nuevas y únicas. No obstante, sus vivencias son igual de relevantes para construcción de la imagen de los coreanos alrededor del mundo, así como también de su rol en la inclusión de los estudiantes como parte vital de la experiencia migratoria en Corea. Sus privilegios y desventajas en la vida cotidiana son reflejo de la concepción de occidente y del extranjero que tienen los coreanos. Las enormes diferencias entre los migrantes de cada continente muestran las inequidades aún prevalentes de las tradiciones confucianas y del impacto de invasiones extranjeras a través de los siglos a la península.  El proyecto de investigación aglomeró todas estas experiencias por medio de relatos de viaje, otorgándole prioridad máxima a individuos extranjeros en plena exposición a la vida coreana, permitiendo narrar una estancia de seis meses en imágenes traducidas al papel.  Que pretende dar a conocer en detalle esas prácticas para que otros agentes se aproximen al fenómeno que es estudiar en Corea.

Project merupakan upaya diplomasi publik dalam bentuk program pertukaran pelajar yang diinisiasi oleh pernyataan dari PM Jepang Shizo Abe pada 23 rd International Conference on The Future of Asia, yang dimana diciptakanaya program ini dengan tujuan untuk menyebarkan nilai-nilai dan budaya Jepang serta membantu penciptaan Society 5.0 di Jepang itu sendiri. Tentunya hal ini ingin dicapai oleh Jepang terhadap negara-negara di Asia, dikarenakan Jepang juga ingin meningkatkan pengaruhnya di kawasan Asia. Indonesia sebagai salah satu negara terbesar di Asia, terutama Asia Tenggara tidak luput juga dari implementasi program ini, hal ini juga disebabkan oleh melimpahnya sumber daya manusia muda atau pemuda-pemudi Indonesia yang dapat mengikuti program tersebut dan membantu menjadi perwakilan nilai dan budaya Jepang di Indonesia, serta membantu penciptaan Society 5.0 di Jepang. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan menggunakan studi pustaka.

Through a collection of chronicles, Amina narrates experiences and reflections encountered during her exchange year in a little town in Michigan when she was 16 years old. She recounts stories about growing up in Morocco, about her family: the threads that connect them and the boundaries that separate their bodies. She describes the love story of a father and his youngest daughter, two individuals connected in the invisible world through an umbilical cord, about living in a foreign country and about being a stranger in someone’s home.

She questions what it means to be alive, why she was the one who survived her childbirth, and why she have always failed to value the wisdom within which she grew up. By reading and reflecting about intimate letters written by her father, Amina is reminded that she is conceived by two creatures of light, made of ecstatic love, and that tolerance and kindness are virtues that one should ought to navigate the world through.

Exchange is an opportunity. A chance to experience lifestyle, culture, country, language, friends and new environment. The youth exchange is a golden opportunity for a young girl like me to learn from the other side of the world. An opportunity to share the beauty of our tradition, language, education, arts and music with the people around the globe have always been my dreams as I always do that with my online pen pal. A real-time experience of it might be a once in a lifetime experience for me. Exchange is a chance to learn the beautiful tradition of a country. I have always love to try and experience the culture. Especially Korean culture as I have always watch Korean dramas and shows. I have learned about their culture and cannot wait to try it myself. Traditional clothes 'Hanbok' and even their food 'kimchi' and 'spicy rice cakes' have always been my favourite whenever I went to a Korean restaurant. Music has no language as Korean pop is like a part of me. I have been a fan of this music genre since I was in primary school and have learned the language by myself as I want to understand the lyrics. Tradition and music play a very big part in everyone's life as it is like our flesh and bone because it is hard to separate them from deep of our heart. Exchange is sharing. Korean early childhood education has always made me curious as the system and curriculum are so much different from Malaysia. As a student of early childhood education in one of the government educational institutes, I have learned that our country's education has been head towards the east. As early education in South Korea mainly focused on attitude and to be independent it has attracted me to learn more about their education and get my eyes on it. Exchange is a spirit. Capture the spirit and essence of life in the country that I got to visit is a dream come true. As my love for photography is 'Beyond Borders', the idea of getting close and interacting with people may be intimidating to some, but not me. I love seeing how people react to my camera. Most of the time people will smile at me and laugh while taking their pictures. I would like to share with the world the emotion and beauty of nature and people in my photograph. I love to share with the world how the beauty had moved my heart to love the place and the people. Just when the caterpillar thought her life was over, she began to fly. Just when I start losing hope to get to another country for a student exchange program, I came across one of my friend posts on social media about this youth exchange program and I tried to apply for it. I hope that this butterfly can spread her wings to share with the world her passion, love, and dedication to shower her sweetness and positivity to others.

For many years there has been research on study abroad, student mobility and international student exchange; however in the last two decades the volume and scope of this work has increased significantly. There are now specific academic journals, a host of new books each year, expansive reports by international research organizations, and an increasing number of annual conferences that are all publishing on trends and issues related to this phenomenon. Yet surprisingly, in comparative education scholarship much of this research still appears relatively infrequently in its main journals. This article examines the seeming contradiction of, on the one hand, more student and institutional participation in worldwide international education each year and new research accompanying this trend and, on the other hand, the relative scarcity of reflection on this activity in the core comparative education journals. The article takes stock of the international education-themed research that has appeared in the past in a selection of comparative education journals, shares the editors' advice to future authors seeking to submit research on these areas, and concludes with some reflections on the future direction of scholarship in international education and comparative education.

As Director of the Centre of American Studies of the University of Hong Kong, 1995-2016. In this capacity I raised approximately US$1,240,000 in research grants from the Starr and Ford Foundations and the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia to provide research fellowships and scholarships to bring to HK mainland Chinese scholars and students in various areas of American studies. Approximately 120 mainland scholars and students spent extended periods of time, from two months to one year, at HKU under these programmes, 1995-2010. These activities were a significant factor in helping to develop American Studies in mainland China. The University of Hong Kong lacked the interest to continue these programmes, so they have been terminated, as, I believe, has the Centre of American Studies.

Despite the advances in virtual connectivity highlighted by the pandemic, international student mobility is one of the essential activities that should be prioritised when the crisis is over.  There is no way to recreate that ontological shock, break down cultural barriers and foster global citizenship without students living and working in different countries.  However, to justify the carbon footprint of this activity, we need to commit to making international mobility authentic and inclusive.

Il I Colóquio Brasil Itália è un evento scientifico di carattere internazionale, promosso dal PPGESA e realizzato presso il DCH-III / UNEB, nella città di Juazeiro-BA, il 31 luglio (pre-colloquio) e dal 21 al 23 agosto, 2019. Quali sono state le circostanze che hanno determinato l'organizzazione e la realizzazione di un evento, finora, unico nel suo genere in questo contesto? In un primo momento, questo articolo si propone di rendere pubbliche le linee del tempo di due cammini percorsi da persone che hanno creduto che l'incontro e il dialogo tra soggetti di culture diverse possano fare la differenza dal punto di vista umano e formativo. Cammini che, incrociandosi, hanno creato le condizioni per la realizzazione dell'evento. L'analisi dei dati raccolti attraverso documenti, questionari e interviste mostra la correlazione tra le diverse esperienze che, nel corso di decenni, hanno creato e rafforzato relazioni tra persone e istituzioni brasiliane e italiane, attraverso il desiderio di colmare le distanze (fisiche, psicologiche, economiche, culturali e sociali) e oltrepassare i confini (polarizzazioni e gerarchie disumanizzanti, pregiudizi e razzismo) per la formazione di cittadini capaci di vivere e agire nel proprio contesto e pensare a livello globale. In un secondo momento l'articolo presenta le caratteristiche principali dell'evento quali l'obiettivo generale, le finalità, i destinatari e il programma. This writing examines the remarkable career of the founding East Asian scholar at Montreal's Concordia University. He was the individual who did more than merely a college professor after 37 years there. He had helped to shape a new course in Sino-Canadian relations.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced schools worldwide to suddenly transition to remote learning. The change forced students, who might not choose to take distance education courses, to adjust to a new way of completing their coursework. Further, this impacted certain student groups like exchange students more adversely since distance courses complicated academic exchanges by rendering shortterm exchange students isolated on an empty campus in a foreign country, all while recently arriving to both. There are many intrinsic hardships to academic exchanges but there is a lack of research on exchange students' experiences learning online when immediately transitioning from face-to-face courses to emergency remote or online courses under such circumstances. This exploratory descriptive study investigated exchange students' experiences learning online during the COVID19 pandemic in the Republic of Korea. 140 exchange students responded to a survey about their experiences and perceptions of their online courses. The quantitative results in this study show a relatively ambivalent experience in terms of quality Teaching and Learning Processes, Course Structure, and Student Support, although students had both good and bad experiences. Qualitative data provided insight into the desired but missing aspects of exchange students' ERT experiences: communication from faculty, interaction with other students, and feedback on their work.

The globalisation and integration processes greatly facilitate the international mobility of university students. This paper examines the trends in students' mobility within the EU and its potential effect on employment of university graduates in the EU countries. We assume that more international experience of students during their studies could improve their practical skills which could further lead to better employability of graduates on average. We are focused especially on countries' openness to the international mobility of students expressed as the sum of students arriving in the country and those studying in another EU country. The paper is mostly empirically oriented using panel data for 28 EU member states in the period 2000-2012. We firstly applied fixed effects regression in order to capture potential short-run effects. In the second stage we used panel cointegration techniques in order to test potential causality between selected variables in the long-run. We found relatively strong evidence that the openness of the country with respect to students' exchange (both inward and outward) could have a positive effect on employment of graduates. This seems to be especially true in the long-run. Thus, the international mobility of students seems to be beneficial in respect of increasing overall employment rate of university graduates in the long-run.

Dieser Band ist aus dem deutsch-französischen Comenius-Projekt "ILIS - Interkulturelles Lernen im Schüleraustausch" hervorgegangen, das die Zielsetzung verfolgte, interkulturelles Lernen im interregionalen Schüleraustausch zwischen dem Saarland und Lothringen zu untersuchen und zu fördern.
Die Beiträge stellen Erfahrungen und Evaluationsergebnisse aus dem Schuman-Austausch-Programm vor, das Schülerinnen und Schülern ermöglicht, zwei oder vier Wochen in der Partnerregion zu verbringen. Theoretische Impulse zum interkulturellen Lernen sowie didaktische Materialien und Methoden zeigen außerdem Wege auf, interkulturelle Lernprozesse anzuregen und zu unterstützen, z.B. durch die Arbeit mit Filmen und Videotagebüchern.
Damit richtet sich der Band an Akteure im Schüleraustausch und der Austauschforschung, vor allem aber auch an Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, die sich in die Thematik einarbeiten möchten. Eine kommentierte Auswahlbibliographie bietet schließlich Möglichkeiten zur Vertiefung des Themas.

ABSTRACT
Countries, associations and institutions have invested financial resources in strategies to offer their students opportunities for establishing transnational contacts to foster autonomy, independence and professional exchange among their citizens. This practice is not new and is part of government’s internationalization plans both in old empires and in developing nations. Scholarships are the main instrument to carry out these language policies. These awards are benefits given to students who have the opportunity to strengthen lasting relationships with different countries. Some of these benefits also serve as instruments that enable soft power relations as a state policy that permeates international relations through the use and influence of language. This paper aims to present the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) program and outline how the initiative has contributed to designing a generation of Germans and Americans. The motivation for the work is to understand the role of strategic educational alliances between nations that were once at war. The paper also draws lessons from this attempt at cultural (re)approximation through a mixture of sociolinguistic immersion and diplomacy. These individuals (students-ambassadors)help to re(write) German history, but the issues to be debated relate to practical and valid transformation, management, nation-branding strategies in a highly globalized world.

When Eric Ashby published his informal portrait of the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth (AUBC) in 1963, he noted that the interchange and secondment of staff between Commonwealth universities had long been one of its perennial topics of discussion. He commented: “It is extraordinary how frequently this last topic is talked about and approved and yet how difficult it is to turn pious resolutions into fruitful action.”

This chapter is concerned with the AUBC’s first concerted attempt to do just this through the establishment of the Commonwealth University Interchange Scheme (CUIS) in 1948. It explores both the “pious resolutions” on which the scheme was founded and the
reasons why it proved so difficult to turn them into “fruitful action.” In particular, the scheme’s administrators would grapple with the profound changes that were redefining the Commonwealth and their implications for academic exchange. Their story is one of failure: although the CUIS ran until 1980, within a decade of its launch it had already been largely
superseded by the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). But this is also a story that reveals the tensions inherent in using an international framework to promote a transnational academic community whose members belonged to universities that were
themselves guided by national imperatives.

В международных образовательных обменах ежегодно участвуют миллионы студентов и преподавателей по всему миру. 
С присоединением к Болонскому процессу в Болгарии была начата реформа высшего образвания, целью которой является соответствие европейским стандартам и повышение конкуренции на рынке образовательных услуг.

This article presents a personal narrative of my critical engagement and partnership role in a longstanding international relationship between two higher education institutions that has deepened understandings of art education in both Jamaica and America and broadened understandings of cultural identities of each across and within the countries. As such, this article suggests that time and depth of a relationship across countries has significant impact to the learning and growing as well the variety of individuals involved in educationally giving and receiving, which has supported the duration of the partnership through developing multiple sustainable relationships. The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica is the premier arts college in the English-speaking Caribbean and has retained a fifteen-year partnership with the Art Education Department at The Ohio State University, which came out of the work of Ohio State doctoral students who were from Jamaica beginning in the 1980s. The budding relationship turned-partnership led to the development of a “mostly” online Master’s degree program in Art Education for art teachers in Jamaica and eventually to a study
abroad program for Ohio State students to travel to Kingston. Sharing expertise across the countries and through a variety of social and cultural lenses has allowed participants to complicate notions and understandings of each country, and therefore reflect on their own cultural identities, realities and limitations as artists and art educators.
