Hellenistic and Persian astrology

A Hermész Triszmegisztosz bölcsessége c. kötetben (Budapest, 2020, Helikon-Szenzár) napvilágot látott Liber Hermetis egy hellenisztikus asztrológiai kompiláció, melynek helyes értelmezése a korabeli görög asztrológia bizonyos fokú ismerete nélkül elképzelhetetlen. A kötet függelékében megjelent tanulmány a hellenisztikus asztrológia alapjait - eszköztárát, terminológiáját, technikáit -  mutatja be tömören, amely egyaránt hasznos lehet a gyakorlati hermetika kutatóinak és a modern asztrológiában járatos olvasók számára is.

The Aramaic zodiac in the Dead Sea Scrolls, contained in 4Q318 Zodiac Calendar ar and Brontologion, found in Cave 4 at Qumran, has similarities and differences to Babylonian and Hellenistic zodiacs. This information may help to identify the cultural influences in the Aramaic version in the Dead Sea Scrolls, the only extant such zodiac from an ancient primary source. This paper will show how 4Q318 Zodiac Calendar functions both in relation to the Jewish calendar and to the Babylonian calendar. Using data from Rochberg's Babylonian Horoscopes, it will demonstrate empirically why the text should be regarded not as Mesopotamian or Hellenistic, but as a Jewish zodiac calendar.

Por otra parte, el hecho de que se trate de tres planetas invisibles a ojo desnudo es un símbolo suficientemente explícito sobre la cualidad de su influencia.

Works concerning astrology and divination comprise one of the least studied Syriac literary genres. The most common of these is that simply titled Spar-Sammané (Book of Medicines). It is a work which arouses strong feelings of mystery in most Assyrians today, with a great number of original manuscripts jealously guarded by their owners from inquisitive eyes. The Spar-Sammané exists in many different recensions and versions, with most manuscripts originating from northern Iraq and southeast Turkey  – largely within an East Syriac milieu. At the present time, an uncritical edition of only one manuscript has ever been published and translated into English – by Sir E.A. Wallis Budge in 1913. The translation of another version into Neo-Aramaic was published in Chicago during the 1990s. Between September and December 2009 this writer has, for the first time, managed to document and digitise eight versions of this book in Classical Syriac and Neo-Aramaic, still kept in private collections which he was given access to in Dohuk (Iraq) and villages of the Khabur region (Syria). The aim of this paper will be to provide an introduction on Syriac literature concerning astrology and divination, an overview of the different versions known to exist in both manuscript and print form, and will briefly touch on some of what is contained in different versions of the Spar-Sammané.

In an attempt to read the fortunes of kings and the powerful in the Ptolemaic sky, Hellenistic astrologers have often used the image of a throne and a stool, as a metaphor for elevation, exaltation, upward ascent, and success. These λαμπήναι or θρόνοι were the basis of interpretive techniques still in use in the Middle Ages and early modern period, to predict the success of an undertaking or the victory and prosperity of a ruler.

The first part of this article draws on materiality theory, Annales school concepts, and the iconography of ancient Roman coins to provide the theoretical archaeological framework for what follows. The second part uses computed astronomical charts and draws on ancient writers to connect Caesar's comet of 44 BCE to the image of the "great red dragon" in Revelation 12:3; and to connect the path of Comet Halley of 66 CE through the constellations Aquarius (located in the region of the ancient sky known as the celestial "sea"), Capricornus , Virgo, Crater, and Hydra, to the image of the "beast rising out of the sea" in Revelation 13:1, to the image of the earth beast in Revelation 13:11 that has "two horns, like a ram" but that speaks like "dragon", and to the image of the"great harlot" who sits on the sea beast and in whose hand is a "cup" in Revelation 17:1-4. The result is a positive dating of these texts in the New Testament Book of Revelation to the years 66-70 CE of the Jewish War.

Заданфаррух аль-Андарзагар — персидский астролог, живший в период империи Сасанидов (224–637). Его основной труд, «Книга рождений» (Kitāb almawālīd), был составлен на среднеперсидском языке. Он не сохранился в оригинале, однако более поздние авторы приводят выдержки из труда Андарзагара на арабском, латинском и греческом языках. Наиболее значительный отрывок из «Книги рождений», посвященный прогностическим методам, содержит информацию о солнечных революциях, профекциях, дирекциях и фирдарах. Эти методы описывались еще в трудах греческих ученых, таких как Дорофей и Валент, однако персидский астролог существенно переработал и дополнил дошедшую до него систему. Эта книга — первый русский перевод фрагментов книги Андарзагара, снабженный вводными материалами и научным аппаратом.
Она может быть интересна всем интересующимся арабской культурой и классической астрологией, как начинающим любителям, так и опытным астрологам.
