Cheating

Studies have shown that academic dishonesty is a complex and a growing problem worldwide. The aim of this study is to explain the personal philosophy and understandings of students about academic dishonesty. The research is based on semi-structured interviews with 26 undergraduate students. The results of the study indicate that undergraduate students mostly regard academic dishonesty as cheating on exams and giving answers to their fellow students. Participants inter alia mentioned reasons regarding academic dishonesty the indifferent attitude of university teachers who, as if, prompt and encourage students to cheat and who themselves also provide a negative model for students. The reasons behind academic dishonesty are associated with the widespread use of it in comprehensive schools and the internet makes participating in academic dishonesty easier for students. To reduce academic dishonesty the following option is mentioned: students should be interested in and should try to acquaint themselves with teaching methods of the members of university teachers. Understanding how undergraduate students think about academic dishonesty and their attitudes towards it could help reduce incidences of academic dishonesty.

In every educational institution, in every country and generation, there is a struggle between corrupt practices and the continuing quest for high ethical standards.  An educational institution is poorer if its members engage in corrupt practices.  Such misfeasance wastes limited resources, demoralizes participants, and adversely affects productivity.  The nature of this corruption is multi-faceted, and observes no geographic boundaries.  It exists in every culture.

In some of these cases, educational corruption can be quite subtle.  This is true where conduct that is neither criminal, fraudulent, nor a breach of fiduciary duty nevertheless undercuts the moral foundations of the educational enterprise.  For example, if academic honors are conferred based not on merit, but on political loyalty, the process is arguably corrupt.  When incidents such as this happen, the educational enterprise is diminished in a very real sense.

In order to combat these pernicious practices, there are certain basic principles that should shape efforts to deter, expose, and penalize corruption in academic institutions.  Once thoroughly considered and understood, these principles can be translated into “best practices” that can be followed by educational enterprises aspiring to high ethical standards, and used to evaluate and condemn ethically unacceptable practices of recurring importance.

There is strong evidence that athletes have approached the improvement of their performance with intelligence and creativity from the very beginnings of formal competition. This has involved the evolution of training methods, the development of equipment and experimentation with diet. However, the introduction of significant prizes in events such as the ancient Olympics quickly corrupted the noble goals of seeking athletic perfection for itself or as a tribute to the Gods. Certainly in the ancient Olympic Games competitors used a variety of herbs and funguses as stimulants and hallucinogenics. Philostratus, a 3rd-2nd Century BC sophist, reveals that doctors helped athletes prepare for their events at Olympia and advised cooks in the preparation of concoctions containing such ingredients as the juice of the opium poppy to deaden pain. However evidence is hard to come by as they carefully hid their efforts from the Hellanodikai, the judges, as athletes continue to do (König, 2008; Papagelopoulos, Mavrogenis, and Soucacos, 2004). It is possible that the English word ‘doping’ originates in the Dutch word dop, a viscous opium juice, probably similar to that used by the ancient Greeks (Bowers, 1998).

They are our sisters, mothers, neighbors, and friends. They are the women whose marriages you think are “good”—or at minimum “fine.” But they are also the women who are online prowling for secret lovers to fulfill sexual desires and untapped passions. They did not “fall” into this. They weighed their options. And then they sought out and took a lover. And they’ve granted us a peek into their minds, psyches, and worlds.
Using a sample collected from Ashley Madison, a niche online dating site catering to married individuals seeking an affair partner, this book is the result of a yearlong inquiry into women’s extramarital experiences. Ultimately, these women reject the binary proposition of marriage that assumes that either we work on our marriages and remain monogamous within them, or we break up the relationship and take up other relationships. These women conceive of an alternate solution to a marriage that is not wholly working, where their own needs are ignored, unmet, and not prioritized. Thus, the women in this study are engaging in secret defiance of the expectations of marriage and primary partnerships. Many felt at the end of their capacity to endure in their primary partnership when they first sought an outside partner.
These women spoke of their primary partnerships as spaces of constraint, and their roles (“wives,” “girlfriends,” and “fiancée”) as limiting and restrictive. They spoke of their participation in outside partnerships as an exercise of power through autonomy and personal authority that their role as “wife” did not permit. These women were not mate-shopping, and most did not categorize their outside partnerships as ones of “love,” but as relationships of sexual utility. Outside partners provided much needed sexual release for women whose appetites exceeded their primary partner’s, or whose marriage was sexless. These women believed that their affairs helped them manage their emotional life and emotional responses to their primary partners, and ultimately enabled them to remain and endure in their primary partnerships.

Plagiarism is a serious, yet widespread type of research misconduct, and is often neglected in developing countries. Despite its far-reaching implications, plagiarism is poorly acknowledged and discussed in the academic setting, and insufficient evidence exists in Latin America and developing countries to inform the development of preventive strategies. In this context, we present a longitudinal case study of seven instances of plagiarism and cheating arising in four consecutive classes (2011-2014) of an Epidemiology Masters program in Lima, Peru, and

The aim of this chapter is to analyse cheating in sport. More specifically, it explores: (1) a variety of ways in which teams and individuals cheat in sport including sabotage, match fixing and doping; (2) the reasons why some athletes cheat; and (3) the relationship between cheating in sport and wider cultural norms
and values. Then, using football as a case study, various strands of cheating are considered, before drawing some conclusions. However, first it is important to briefly understand ‘cheating’ for clarity in discussion.

Reviewers of previous-research, for the study of academic-dishonesty, cite lack of a theoretical-framework as a serious-flaw that limits the generalizations to be reasonably-made. The concept and term of theory are essential in any-discipline, that perceives itself as scholarly or scientific, hence theory is essential in educational-research as a research-domain. Interest in theory-method relations, comes from previous-works on structure and agency in teaching-learning-interactions in higher-education. In addition, there have been criticisms of the extent of theory use and the type of theory applied in higher-education-research. This study is therefore, focused on illustrative-review of theories and models relevant to cheating-behaviour, which resulted in an array of 19 theories, 10 models and 3 supportive-approaches. This contribution seeks inspiring an interest in the academic-fraternity into using solid-theoretical-foundation for their-study on cheating-behaviour, thus promoting of educational-research of high-scientific-value. It also anticipates enhancing the knowledge-base for professional-education and its policy-making and administration, among other-areas.

ÖZET Bu araştırmanın amacı, Karabük Üniversitesi Sağlık Hizmetleri Meslek Yüksekokulu'nda öğrenim gören öğrencilerin kopya çekme tutumlarını öğrencilerin cinsiyetlerine, bölüme sınavsız geçiş hakkıyla gelip gelmemelerine ve öğretimin etkililiği, sınavların dersle ilişkisi ve sınavların mesleki gelişime katkısıyla ilişkili görüşlerine göre incelemektir. Araştırmada Ay ve Çakmak (2015) tarafından geliştirilen Kopya Çekmeye Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini 269 kadın, 104 erkek olmak üzere toplam 373 öğrenci oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada elde edilen sonuçlara göre; kız öğrencilerin ahlaki tutum puan ortalamaları erkek öğrencilerin puan ortalamalarından daha yüksek çıkmıştır, ancak kız ve erkek öğrencilerin çevresel şartlar ve fırsat-beceri alt faktörlerine ilişkin puanları farklılaşmamıştır. Ayrıca etkili öğretimin gerçekleştiği derslerde, sınav sorularının ders içeriğiyle örtüştüğü durumlarda ve sınav sorularının mesleki gelişime katkısı olduğuna inandıkları durumlarda öğrencilerin fırsatlar oluşsa da kopya çekme tutumlarının değiştiği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Anahtar Kelimeler: Kopya çekme, kopya çekmeye ilişkin tutum, ölçme ve değerlendirme, yükseköğretim ABSTRACT Goal of this research is to analyze cheating attitudes of the students at School of Vocational Health Care Services of Karabük University according to gender of the students, the condition whether they were accepted to the department with the right to open admission or not, and their opinions about effectiveness of the education, the relationship between exams and courses, and contribution of the exams to vocational development. The scale of Cheating Attitude which was developed by Ay and Çakmak was used in the research. The research sample comprised 373 students including 269 females and 104 males. According to research results, female students' average score of moral attitude was found to be higher than that of male students. However, there was no difference in the scores of environmental conditions and opportunity-skill sub-factors between the female and male students. It was concluded that when exam questions match up with the course content and the students believe in the contribution of exam questions to their vocational development their cheating attitudes change even though several opportunities to cheat arise.

Celem badań było wstępne zbadanie związków między deklarowaną częstością oszukiwania podczas sprawdzianów wiedzy a samooceną i tendencją do usprawiedliwiania zachowania. Badanie objęło 141 studentów, wykorzystano w nim skalę SES Rosenberga oraz własną ankietę i zadania w których studenci oceniali zachowania ściągającego studenta oraz przedstawiali swoją propozycję reakcji wykładowcy w sytuacji przyłapania studenta na ściąganiu. Wyniki badań nie potwierdziły związku pomiędzy samooceną a tendencją do usprawiedliwiania oszukiwania. Ze względu na ograniczenia dotyczące możliwości uogólniania wyników przeprowadzonych prób konieczne wydają się dalsze, pogłębione badania. Jest jednak możliwe, że ogólna samoocena nie odgrywa w procesach związanych z usprawiedliwianiem i samousprawiedliwianiem nieuczciwego zachowania kluczowej roli. Stwierdzono natomiast istotne statystycznie korelacje dotyczące związku między częstością ściągania a usprawiedliwianiem tego zachowania (wraz ze wzrostem częstości ściągania zwiększa się tendencja do usprawiedliwiania ściągania), oceną szkodliwości ściągania (wraz ze wzrostem częstości ściągania zmniejsza się ocena szkodliwości ściągania), dotkliwością sankcji proponowanych wobec ściągających (wraz ze wzrostem częstości ściągania zmniejsza się dotkliwość sankcji proponowanych dla osób przyłapanych na ściąganiu) oraz oceną własnej uczciwości (wraz ze wzrostem częstości ściągania obniża się samoocena w aspekcie związanym z uczciwością).

The research project was conducted in order to preliminarily probe into possible relations between the declared frequency of cheating during knowledge tests, self-esteem levels and the propensity to justify own behaviors. It covered 114 students, was based on Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, the questionnaire developed by the author and tasks deployed for students to assess the behavior of those who cheated and to present the suggested response to be adopted by the lecturer who spotted cheating. Research results have not confirmed that there might be a relation between the self-esteem levels and the propensity to justify cheating. Considering the limited possibility of generalizing the results obtained on the said study sample, it would seem advisable to conduct further, more in-depth studies. However, it may also be possible that the general self-esteem levels do not impact significantly the process of justification and self-justification of dishonest behaviors. At the same time, the study has shown some statistically significant correlations between the frequency of cheating and the justification of such behavior (the more frequent the cheating behavior, the higher the propensity to justify the behavior), the assessment of cheating as harmful (the more frequent the cheating behavior, the less frequent assessment of cheating as harmful), the severity of sanctions suggested for individuals caught cheating, and the assessment of own honesty (the more frequent the cheating behavior, the lower levels of honesty self-assessments).

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to assess the nature, and perceived causes of Ambo University students’ misbehavior. The study used descriptive research design with a quantitative approach.  Stratified sampling was used to choose teachers from different departments while simple random sampling technique was employed to select the teachers from the chosen departments. The instrument of data collection was self-administered questionnaire and SPSS.20 was used to analyze percentages and frequencies. Results of the study showed that almost all teachers reported that their students had committed minor and major violations. Students at the University were involved in minor and major thefts (n = 334, 100%), caused ethnic based conflicts (n = 260, 77.8%), advocated political activism in campus (n=42, 72.5%). About half of the teachers reported that the students stole  test/exam papers (n=168, 50.3%) and had destroyed  University property. Similarly, students had injured University employees in fights (n=242, 72.5%). Displaying inappropriate sexual behavior openly in the University were observed by some teachers (n=260, 77.8%). Most of the misbehaviors are cause for concern and questions the future of the nation given the extent and enormity of the misbehaviors

The aim of this research is to find out the reasons for cheating and plagiarism tendencies and behaviours of university students, to suggest solutions with these findings and to contribute to the literature on this topic. Descriptive methods were used in this research. The research population consists of students from the Faculty of Sport Sciences. Two separate measuring instruments were used in the research to collect qualitative and quantitative data. Qualitative data were collected from 220 students while quantitative data were from 32 students. Frequencies were calculated for qualitative data and the common statements found were analysed. Normal distribution of the quantitative data was observed and the data were not distributed normally. Therefore; Mann-Whitney U test was applied for dual groups and Kruskall-Wallis test to groups more than two, from non-parametic tests. According to the results obtained from the study; more than half of the participants cheated. These results showed that the tendency for reference dishonesty, homework project dishonesty and cheating was at medium level while research reporting plagiarism is at a lower level. The main reasons behind cheating and plagiarism according to student views were the fear of receiving a low grade, taking the easy way out and not studying, rote-learning based education system and teachers not making a fair and equal evaluation. In order to prevent cheating and plagiarism which became current issues in education system, instructors must not frighten the students with grades, must enhance exam inspection and try for students to like the courses.

This paper focuses on the role of punishment as a critical social mechanism for cheating prevention in MMORPGs. The role of punishment is empirically investigated in a case study of the MMORPG Tibia (http://www.tibia.com) and by focusing on the use of bots to cheat. We describe the failure of punishment in Tibia, which is perceived by players as one of the elements facilitating the proliferation of bots. In this process some players act as a moral enterprising group contributing to the reform of the game rules and in particular to the reform of the Tibia punishment system by the game company. In the conclusion we consider the ethical issues raised by our findings and we propose some general reflections on the role of punishment and social mechanisms for the governance of online worlds more generally

In the present dissertation, infidelity is analysed ‘as performance’ in the frame of contemporary heterosexual relationships in Western society. There are two basic aims from several branches of inquiry. Firstly, I attempt to analyse and display a structure of infidelity that allows questioning the couple formation as we know it. Secondly, I aim to explore the double-standard between two kinds of betrayal, namely infidelity and surveillance. Both convey deception, lies and dishonesty. Theoretical and fictional material are both used to develop the arguments and extract from them the behaviour, body performance and reification of infidelity. I aim to be a weaver who uses theoretical and fictional threads to build a pattern where betrayal appears as a fractal figure.

This paper examines consumer perspectives on match-fixing in esports-professionalized competitive videogame play-and the implications of these perspectives for understanding game and gambling integrity. The relationship between match-fixing, game integrity, and gambling is a close one, as gambling markets are reliant on strong game integrity, but has not yet been studied in detail in the context of esports. Drawing on extensive qualitative data collected from esports fans around the world, this paper examines perceptions of gambling awareness, integrity, and esports gambling to assess esports consumers' awareness of and attitudes toward gambling-related match-fixing. Results indicate that esports viewers are not deeply concerned by match-fixing. In addition, spectators typically view gambling as a cause of corruption among competitors, but also understand and accept some elements of the practice. Further, spectators tend to rely on rules to determine their assessment of what is "wrong", rather than assessments based on ethics, and are often willing to forgive infractions through a range of reasons and justifications. We propose a need for education among esports spectators, extending existing anti-cheating programs beyond just athletes to include the broader esports community.

This study is a fraction of a larger-research on cheating in exams at the School of Engineering (SOE). The study-design used a descriptive-survey-approach and a document-analysis. A designed confidential self-report-questioner was applied as the main-instrument for this-study, with the sample-size of 100-subjects, and a response-rate of 95%. The tool was pre-tested to ensure its validity and reliability. The study focused on the Attribution-Theory and the Pareto-principle. The data-collection-instrument was subjected to the statistical-analysis to determine its reliability via Cronbach's alpha-coefficient, and found high inter-item consistency (a > 0.9). The major-results of this-study revealed that 65% of respondents declared that cheating is, in fact, a common-phenomenon in the SOE; 60% of students also affirmed, that it is, actually, difficult to eradicate cheating in examinations in the SOE; and 70% of students acknowledged that they use mobile-phones to Google or to assess notes, during examinations. The results also illustrate that cheating, undeniably, is a very-real-issue of massive-concern at SOE; accordingly, several-recommendations to fight cheating were given and areas for further-research were identified as well. The findings of the study would potentially help in curriculum-development and delivery approaches, and for the improvement of the exciting or establishment of new academic-integrity-polices, which would, in turn, limit the growing-tendency by candidates, to seek shortcuts to good-grades, in their academic-endeavors.

A survey of the Quran suggests that the Prophet(SAW) was not only the Last Prophet (khatam-un-nabiyeen) and was sent to give glad tidings (basheer) to those who accepted the revelation sent to him by Allah(ST) and to warn (nadheer) those who rejected the revelation, he was also Mercy to the Mankind (rahmat-ul-lil-'alameen), was endowed with the best character (kholoq-in-'adheem), and was sent as a teacher (mo'allim) and sanctifier (yozakkehim. Scholars have counted many other attributes of the Prophet(SAW). The focus of the author in this paper is to enumerate those statements of the Prophet(SAW) which reflects his personal wisdom. Though his whole military campaign and diplomacy was a result of his wisdom, the focus in this paper is on health sciences, safety, and social sciences.

Stereotypes of Asian students as being more prone to plagiarize are frequently found in the literature, though not concretely substantiated. This study used a behavioral criterion to examine the relationships among ethnicity, acculturation, and plagiarism in a sample of 158 undergraduate and graduate students. Significant differences in plagiarism behavior were found based on level of student acculturation, but not ethnicity. Considerations and implications for training and managing international students and workers are discussed.

This criterion study examined the impact of the cultural dimensions of individualism and collectivism on actual plagiarism in working business students. Given globalization of business and recent business scandals, furthering our understanding of international ethics remains critical. Business students are the potential employees, managers and leaders of organizations in the future. In this study we focus on one form of unethical conduct by business students, i.e. actual plagiarism, and seek to determine the link between this behavior and cultural values of individualism/collectivism and associated stereotypes of Asian/Caucasian students. Our findings suggest that individualists plagiarize more than collectivists, and that no significant differences in plagiarism exist between Asian and Caucasian students, contrary to popular beliefs. The implications of these findings for scholars and managers are discussed.

This study is a mixed method research which attempted to determine the prevalence and correlates of academic cheating when the students are privileged to define which acts would be classified as academically dishonest. The results of the study showed that some of the cheating behaviors identified in the literature are not recognized by students as dishonest. When students define what acts are cheating and what are not, roughly eight (8) out of every 10 students will be considered as having cheated at least once within an academic year. Furthermore, students have an average of six (6) cheating techniques under their disposal, three (3) of which are used in examinations, quizzes, and/or exercises and the other three (3) in papers and/or projects. The study also found that when the student-defined list of cheating behaviors is utilized, cheating is more frequently done in exams, quizzes, and/or exercises than in papers and/or projects. Finally, it was found that cheating have several variables with moderately strong significant correlations and all of these correlates can be appreciated coherently using Ajzen’s Theory of Planned Behavior.

While brand punishment – through either individual or collective action – has received ample attention by consumer psychologists, absent from this literature is that such punishment can take the form of unethical actions that can occur even when the consumer is not personally harmed. Across three studies, we examine consumers’ propensity to act unethically towards a brand that they perceive to be harmful. We document that when consumers come to see brands as harmful –even in the absence of a direct, personal transgression – they can be motivated to seek retribution in the form of unethical intentions and behaviors. That is, consumers are more likely to lie, cheat, or steal to punish a harmful brand. Drawing on these findings, we advance implications for consumer psychologists and marketing practitioners and provide avenues for future research in the area.

Good performance often attracts praise. But suppose that Llana improves her performance on a Latin language test by using modafinil or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to enhance her ability to memorise new words. Would Llana be due less praise than if she had obtained the same grade but without cognitive enhancement?
Those who endorse the Less Praise Intuition (LPI) – for instance, lay people in our own and in others' studies – might appeal to responsibility-shifting, authenticity, or cheating arguments to support the intuition that less praise is indeed due to people like Llana.
However, we draw on examples from performance enhancement in sport and professional contexts to demonstrate that these arguments leave something out, and then to develop a better justification for LPI. On our account, praise is diminished not because it is shifted to someone else, because it is due to an inauthentic self, or because an otherwise-good performance is blemished by cheating, but because enhanced actors engage in very different activities and so we need different yard-sticks to assess their performance.
This chapter offers a novel perspective on the issue of praise in the presence of cognitive enhancement, but it also gives an outline of a methodology for the ethical reflection on performance enhancement more generally.

During their studies, many students commit some form of academic dishonesty, such as cheating and plagiarism, often to obtain higher grades than they are capable of. The current widespread use of the Internet, mobile and wireless devices has made it easier for students to illegally access information, and at the same time it has become difficult for academic institutions to control and discover such instances. Hence, it is essential that students become aware of the seriousness of these offences, and be encouraged to avoid them. In this paper, we study the attitude towards cheating and plagiarism among female students in the College of Computer and Information Sciences (CCIS) at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. We aim to highlight the most prevailing practices, the underlying reasons, the popular sources of illegal information, and the conception of students towards the ethicalness of such practices. The results of the study indicate that both cheating and plagiarism are common among our students. After having analyzed the results, we propose some recommendations that may help combat cheating and plagiarism among students in higher education.

High-stakes testing is changing what it means to be a ‘good teacher’ in the contemporary school. This paper uses Deleuze and Guattari’s ideas on the control society and dividuation in the context of NAPLAN testing in Australia to suggest that the database generates new understandings of the ‘good teacher’. Media reports are used to look at how teachers are responding to the high-stakes database through manipulating the data. This paper argues that manipulating the data is a regrettable, but logical, response to manifestations of teaching where only the data counts.

This article considers the ethics of sexual telepresence by tracing the history of mechanical and digital sex and exploring the possibilities facilitated by current and emerging technology. My aim is to consider how people have used technology to engage in new forms of sexual expression in order to more clearly delineate exactly what constitutes cheating and the ethical lines surrounding such behaviours. As with non-digital forms of intimacy, it seems clear that there is a range of behaviours that invite different people to draw the lines in different places, ranging from flirtation to erotic talk, to physical contact. But the goal of this article is not merely to consider where the lines may lie, but rather to examine how the medium in which the interaction takes place invites individuals to make particular moral judgments concerning what lines should exist at all concerning both physical and emotional intimacy.

Cheating as one of the important issues of video game, it brings out different discussions on how the game changed and the changes on how players play the game. In this essay, we will have the overview of how different scholar in game studies thinks about the cheating in the game. Then, we will go through different types and levels of cheating and we will also discuss how cheat affect how we perceive the game and what afterwards happened after the application of cheat.

Academic dishonesty in educational institutions is a cause for concern at present. In this paper, the prevalence and severity of various types of dishonest academic behaviors were determined based on the experiences and perceptions of college students. Self-reports on reasons for engaging in a type of cheating or plagiarism were also collected and analyzed to identify certain themes. Findings suggest that cheating on exams and homework is still prevalent, students view these dishonest behaviors as ordinary school acts, and their actions are a product of several factors-teacher's and student's incompetence, unfavorable environment, and lenient imposition of school policy. Certain ethical dilemmas were deduced from the results of the study, such as the varying perceptions on the morality of unfair academic manners and the relative importance of deceit over success.
