1Extinction is a fundamental topic for population ecology and especially for conservation and metapopulation biology. Most empirical studies on extinction resurvey historically occupied sites and estimate extinction probability as the proportion of sites where a species is no longer detected. Possible non-detection of surviving populations is usually not accounted for, which may result in extinction probabilities that are overestimated.2As part of a large revisitation study in north-east Switzerland, 376 sites with historically known occurrences of a total of 11 plant species 80–100 years ago were visited by two independent observers. Based on typical population size, ramet size and plant architecture, we judged six species as easy to find and five species as hard to find. Using capture–recapture methods to separate non-detection from true extinction, we gauged the bias of extinction probability estimates that do not account for non-detection.3When non-detection was not accounted for, a single visit resulted in an average estimate of population extinction probability of 0.49 (range 0.27–0.67). However, the mean detection probability of a surviving population during a single visit had an estimated average of only 0.81 (range 0.57–1). Consequently, accounting for non-detection resulted in extinction probability estimates ranging between 0.09 and 0.61 (mean 0.36). Based on a single survey, our revisitation study would have overestimated the extinction rate on average by 11 percentage points (range 5–22%) or by 59% (range 0–250%) relative to the estimated true value.4A simple binomial argument enables the calculation of the minimum required number of visits to detect a surviving population with high probability (e.g. 95%). The Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) population is often considered hard-tocount in the United States. Following the guidelines set by the Office of Management and Budget, the U.S. Census Bureau classifies the MENA population as White but collects their ancestry data in the American Community Survey. This paper explores how the 2010 Alternative Questionnaire Experiment (AQE) contributes to improving the quality of the data that the Census Bureau collects on MENA ancestries. It discusses results from the AQE conducted during the 2010 Census and evaluates the forms that use the combined race and ethnic origin question in comparison to the control form. This research aims to contribute to improving measurement of the MENA community in the United States.

Objectives. Our objective is to examine spatial relationships between modeled criteria air pollutants (i.e., nitrous oxides, carbon monoxide, and ozone) and sociodemographics in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona. Modeled air pollution offers environmental justice researchers a new and robust data source for representing chronic environmental hazards. Methods. We used multiple regression equations to predict criteria pollution levels using sociodemographic variables at the Census block group level. Results. We find that Census block groups with lower neighborhood socioeconomic status, higher proportions of Latino immigrants, and higher proportions of renters are exposed to higher levels of criteria air pollutants. Proportion African American, however, is not a significant predictor of criteria air pollution in the Phoenix metro area. Conclusions. These findings demonstrate clear social-class and ethnic-based environmental injustices in the distribution of air pollution. We attribute these patterns to the role of white privilege in the historical and contemporary development of industrial and transportation corridors in Phoenix in relation to racially segregated neighborhoods. Although all people are implicated in the production of criteria pollutants, lower-income and ethnic-minority residents are disproportionately exposed in metropolitan Phoenix. A thorough knowledge of the dog demography should be an integral element in the planning, implementation and evaluation of dog population control measures. In May 2008, a door-to-door household census of human and owned canine populations was conducted in 12 contiguous neighbourhoods in the town of Todos Santos Cuchumatán, Guatemala. During the census, household and footpath data were recorded using a handheld Global Positioning System (GPS), and used to create digital census route maps, and perimeter and area estimates of the study region. Approximately 99% of all households (472/476) participated in the census, representing 2461 people in the overall estimated study region area of 80 hectares (ha). A total of 382 dogs were owned by 50.8% (240/472) of households, yielding means of 0.8 (382/472) owned dogs per household and 1.6 (382/240) dogs per dog-owning household. Of the total 382 owned dogs, 88.2% (337/382) were aged three months or older; of these, 68.5% (231/337) were reported as not normally being confined on the household property during the average day, and 9.7% (24/247) of the males and none of the females (0/81) were reported to be neutered. Of the households that owned female dogs, 89.7% (52/58) and 91.4% (53/58) reported that they would have females surgically or non-surgically neutered, respectively, if these services were available. Of the households that owned male dogs, 90.3% (176/195) and 92.3% (180/195) reported that they would have males surgically or non-surgically neutered, respectively, if these services were available. Approximately 72% (238/330) of owned dogs were vaccinated for rabies, and 80% (187/238) of these were males. The owned dog male:female ratio was 2.6:1 (275/107), the owned dog:human ratio was 1:6.4 (382/2461), and the absolute density was 478 (382/0.80) owned dogs/km 2 . This knowledge of the owned dog demography was generated using simple means and has been of direct use in support of, and as baseline data for the planning, implementation and evaluation of subsequent dog population control measures in this population; they may be of similar use in other comparable populations.

Background Thailand's progress in reducing the under-fi ve mortality rate (U5MR) puts the country on track to achieve the fourth Millennium Development Goal (MDG). Whether this success has been accompanied by a widening or narrowing of the child mortality gap between the poorest and richest populations is unknown. We aimed to measure changes in child-mortality inequalities by household-level socioeconomic strata of the Thai population between 1990 and 2000.

In 2001, a widely distributed email urged people to indicate 'Jedi' (from the movie Star Wars) as their religious affiliation on the National Census to be undertaken that year. The email, which may have originated from a prank, stated that if large enough numbers of people declared an affiliation to Jedi, the government would be forced to include it as a religion in future censuses. More than 70,000 Australians and 390,000 Britons heeded the call to action and recorded Jedi as their religion in the 2001 census. Non-discrimination and affirmative action are complex and controversial issues.They aim to speed up the establishment of a representative and unprejudiced workforce and citizenry and assist those deprived by unfair discrimination.Any social or group identity can become a basis of discrimination.This article focuses on an aspect of discrimination peculiar to India,caste-based discrimination,using the debate on caste-based census to illustrate the relationship between affirmative action policy and statistics.We begin by describing how discriminatory practices are set within the history of power relations between caste-groups;and the development of India's anti-discrimination policy through caste-based reservation and the quota system.The interface of statistics and anti-discrimination policy is analysed against this background using caste-based census as illustrative.While Indian census has a long history,comprehensive caste-census was undertaken first in 2011.Being relatively new,this allows us to study the political,socio-economic and practical issues such a statistical exercise throws up in social policy.The objective is to identify ways in which caste-census,and by extension statistical data,support implementation of affirmative action.

The 2011 Census highlighted the enormous growth of census towns, which contributed more than one-third of the urban growth during 2001–11. Since the rural–urban identification process in India is ex ante, using past census data, the number of CTs that will be identified in 2019 for the 2021 Census are estimated. The present study finds that the importance of CTs will be maintained in the urban structure, and a significant share of urban population will continue to grow beyond municipal limits. The influence of large towns on the growth of CTs will be persistent in the future, but a more localised form of urbanisation is also evident where the effect of agglomeration is less. By the end of the 19th century, the Prussian censuses registered regularly the nationality of the population according to a standard criterion: the mother tongue. The background to this institutionalization could be mapped out in terms of the early creation of the statistical office, the reform of the bureaucracy, and the political challenge following the annexation of the western part of the former Polish state. However, this paper gives a different account of that goes beyond a state‐level history of a statistical institution. At the beginning of the 19th century, nationality was already registered in some localities. The purpose was to measure the use of German in schools and churches and hence the effectiveness of the Germanization of the Poles. Although the statistical office was in existence, it had little influence on these local practices, and their heterogeneity prevailed for decades. This situation was modified by the centralization of the census in the 1860s in the hands of the statistical office, and the emergence of a demographic approach. This change occurred in the context of discussions with local authorities regarding their use of language statistics. The census has to be seen therefore as an integration on multiple levels of statistical practices.

Infrastructure affects rural development through many channels, such as improved agricultural productivity, increased rural nonfarm employment, and rural migration into urban sectors. However, the role of infrastructure has not been paid enough attention in the literature due to lack of reliable data on various infrastructure indicators. By using newly available detailed data on rural infrastructure from the Agricultural Census and other official sources, this paper uses a traditional source accounting approach to identify the specific role of rural infrastructure and other public capital in explaining productivity difference among regions, throwing new lights on how to allocate limited public resources for both growth and regional equity purposes. The purpose of this paper is to use Mexican census data to gauge as much as possible the impact of SIL missionary-linguists on local-level literacy, Spanish-acquisition, and material change. This is a longitudinal quantitative study, starting with the census of 1940 and ending with that of 1970. Analysis of census figures is complemented by perusal of the existing literature (personal, anthropological, historical), linguistic materials digitized by SIL and available at its website, and assistance with documents from the SIL Mexico Archive in Arizona.

La validación es una etapa de la generación de información mediante encuestas y censos que tiene la finalidad principal de corregir posibles errores presentes en los datos.
Una de las fases de esta revisión se realiza a través de reglas de validación, que consiste en la detección de combinaciones inaceptables en los valores de ciertos conjuntos de variables. El Método de Fellegi y Holt (MFH), divulgado hacia finales de los 1970’s, presenta una propuesta general, que es el estándar en los sistemas de validación de las oficinas de estadísticas oficiales en el mundo.
Se presenta una descripción general de MFH, un recuento de los principales sistemas de estadísticas oficiales que lo han utilizado, las distintas propuestas que se han presentado para modificar o mejorar dicho método, el estado actual del arte y las posibles líneas de acción futuras en el área de las estadísticas oficiales.

The objective of the current analysis is to discover the territorial characteristics of the Hungarian Roma population and its changes during the last almost three decades. The basis of the investigation is provided by the census datasets from 1990 and 2011-as auto-identification and two surveys (the so-called CIKOBI survey from 1984-1987 and the survey of the University of Debrecen from 2010-2013), ensuring the external ethnic identification. The last census gave 315,000 Roma and the recent survey resulted in approximately 876,000 Roma people in Hungary. The significant growth of the Roma population is obviously demonstrated and its regional disparities are also discovered. The most important regional characteristics came to light with weakening territorial backwardness by the ratio of Roma population living in towns is coming to the national value. However, the rapid growth of the Roma population is especially visible in the case of the districts with high ratio of Roma already during the 1980s (high values approximately doubled as well). This process is quite concentrated mostly in districts in the traditional backward areas of the country.

In two studies, this thesis depicts the relationship between minority group status in the United States, perceived discrimination, and coping with stress. Past literature on coping and its types – problem-focused versus emotion-focused – is inconsistent in terms of differences between minority status groups and majority groups. It remains unknown whether or why Black Americans and lesbian or gay Americans may demonstrate coping patterns that differ from White Americans and heterosexual Americans, respectively. What is altogether absent from the literature is the possible mediating factor of perceived discrimination experienced by these minority groups. That is, differences in internal, stable coping processes that manage stress may have been molded by one’s experience with discrimination. Study 1 examines the relationship between race (Black versus White) and coping, mediated by perceived discrimination. Study 2 examines the relationship between sexual orientation (lesbian or gay versus heterosexual) and coping, mediated by perceived discrimination. Both studies confirm the thesis that minority group members exhibit maladaptive, emotion-focused coping more than majority group

members – but that this difference is explained by the minority group members’ perceived discrimination. Historical and political relevance, social implications, and possible limitations in design and interpretation are discussed.

Thai manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) face intense competition in domestic and foreign markets. Given their importance to the economic development of the country it is important to have a clear understanding of their readiness to face the rigors of international competition, including the barriers and specific problems that they face. This study uses a stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) and technical inefficiency effects model to analyze the technical efficiency of Thai manufacturing SMEs and key factors impacting upon it. Analysis of cross-sectional data from a 2007 census of Thai manufacturing SMEs indicates that their weighted average technical efficiency is approximately 50 percent, signifying a high level of technical inefficiency which is reducing potential output. The inefficiency effects model reveals that firm size, firm age, skilled labor, ownership characteristics and location are firm-specific factors that significantly affect the technical inefficiency of production. Key measures to improve the technical efficiency of Thai manufacturing SMEs are an adequate supply of inputs, access to credit facilities, extensive infrastructural development and training programs for employees.

Why is support for marijuana legalization among African Americans notably modest given that such a policy would drastically reduce the number of African Americans arrested annually for nonviolent drug offenses? In this article I assess whether the urban frustration argument is an adequate explanation for Blacks’ generally low levels of support for marijuana legalization. I analyzed merged Supplemental Homicide Report and Drug Arrest data and General Social Survey data to determine the extent to which race-specific murder victimization rates and race-specific drug arrest rates in U.S. cities are predictive of support for marijuana legalization among Blacks and Whites between 1990 and 2000. Findings indicate that Blacks’ level of support for marijuana legalization is greatest in those cities with the highest Black drug arrest rates. Consequently, these findings provide no support for the urban frustration argument.

In the monograph for the fi rst time, based on the materials of the All-Russian Agricultural Census in 1917, ethnodemographic and ethnosocial development of the indigenous population of the Northern Altai foothills is analyzed. A plurality of identities of the indigenous population
of the Northern Altai foothills was enucleated, and the transformation of their anthroponymic system was studied.

The question of ethnicity/ethnic affiliation is covered in all the censuses of former Yugoslavia, and in those of the countries created after its dissolution. Analysis of successive censuses shows that the question on ethnicity has been modified on numerous occasions. The very notion of nationality has changed over time, as have the list of ethnic groups and their order of appearance in the published results. These changes are closely linked to government policy and to the situation prevailing at the time of each census. The response to the ethnicity question is a subjective criterion, and respondents are free to give the answer of their choice. This right was guaranteed by the Constitution of former Yugoslavia and has been maintained by the newly formed states. This means that a person is liable to report different ethnic affiliations from one census to the next, especially since the list of ethnic groups is itself subject to change. Although Yugoslavians and other nationalities are equal under law, the two groups are always treated separately in the census results. In the new countries created after the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the question on ethnicity was kept in the census, but its wording was changed, along with the number of ethnic groups listed. In addition, the term "national minority", never used in the exYugoslavian census, was introduced for the first time.

Indian census organization, acclaimed as one of the largest and most elaborate data bank on Indian people, has contributed much in classifying one of the most variegated spectrums of civilization in the world. Since the very first census in 1872 the British ruler inquired along the horizontal and vertical extents of the race, religion and caste with an obvious objective of keeping a stronghold on their colony. The evolution of categorizing and defining Indian population by a group of European administrators, in spite of all genuine efforts, has ever been marred with confusions and contradictions. But their pioneering ventures have provided a strong foundation and maiden database towards conceptualizing and scheduling the people of independent India. The official listing of the Indian people on the basis of the long existing latent social hierarchies of caste and tribe have attributed both towards developing an immensely useful systematic information and a catalyst for separatism and fission among the conglomerated communities of India.

Researchers across disciplines have analyzed the ethnoracial classification of Latinxs in the US census, as well as the ideological, political, and material underpinnings and effects of such classification. In this article, I advance our understanding of the census’ reproduction of racial identities and racial discourse in two ways. First, I demonstrate that sociolinguistic theory and methods can shed new light on census classification in three distinct areas: (1) the categories and classifications themselves, (2) the negotiation of ethnoracial classification during census interviews, and (3) the language in which censuses are conducted. Second, I demonstrate that census-taking does not consist simply of recording preexisting ethnoracial identities, or of disseminating official discourses from interviewers to respondents. Instead, census interviews involve the intersubjective construction and production of ethnoracial identities, as interviewers and respondents negotiate the meaning of the categories provided and their places within them.

The article analyzes the 1869 census in the Habsburg Empire as an eminent administrative and scientific operation, which provided knowledge that could be used in different contexts. The census not only produced a population and drafted the outlines of a modern society, it forced different parts of state administration to work together and was a major step toward a self-understanding of the modern state. The article focusses on the practices that were put to use in the production of data and in the construction of a vast knowledge base. It puts up questions on how such an operation could be financed, how it was executed and which challenges had to be tackled in the course of the operation. It integrates recent theoretical approaches from science studies and shows how census was not only a major state operation, but also an opportunity to different groups for civil emancipation .

(ENG) SUMMARY: Information about linguistic affiliation was always collected according to the notion of the mother tongue. Although in demography, mother tongue is seen as a more objective component of ethnonational affiliation, research results suggest significant disparities that are correlated with changes in ethno-statistical nomenclature and flotant behavior of particular ethnic groups. The divergence between language and nationality in Serbia“s population censuses unambiguously indicate that several ethnic communities can simultaneously declare the same mother
tongue, but also that members of the same ethnic group can declare different mother tongues. The oscillations that occur in changes in the size of the population of certain ethnolinguistic modalities are milder than the variability of ethnonational modalities. The most expressive statistical imbalances were recorded in ethnic groups which were introduced into statistical nomenclature due to the targeted ethnonational stratification of the existing nations.
Ethnic dissolution of the existing people simultaneously caused the process of linguistic stratification, by the principle of joining »affiliated« mother tongue, most often of dialectical diversity of existing languages. Changes in the statistical nomenclature of languages that were adjusted with the initiation of new ethnonational modalities during the XX and the beginning of the XXI century serve as a statistical verification of the linguistic stratification of existing languages according to the principle of domination of the subjective understanding of the national identity. In terms of census statistics, this means that the processes of national homogenization, which were based on the language as a factor of integration during the nineteenth century, were replaced by modern processes of linguistic (primarily dialectical) homogenization based on an unstable and statistically unreliable trait of ethnicity, which makes it a peculiar absurdity, both in theory and in practice.

(SI ) Abstract/IZVLEČEK: Prispevek prikazuje kronološke spremembe statističnih nomenklatur jezikovne pripadnosti v popisih prebivalstva Srbije, prav tako pa preučuje vpliv uvedbe novih etnonacionalnih opredelitev na kategorizacijo jezikov.
Uporaba koncepta maternega jezika je bila raziskana s primerjalnimi analizami števila prebivalcev posamezne nacionalne opredelitve in pripadajočega maternega jezika. Z namenom odkrivanja diverzifikacije maternega jezika znotraj istih etničnih skupin je bila uporabljena tudi metoda prečenja etnostatističnih podatkov. Rezultati raziskave kažejo različne stopnje neskladja med številom nacionalno opredeljenih prebivalcev in številom prebivalcev s pripadajočim maternim jezikom. Visoko odstopanje pri skladnosti nacionalne in jezikovne pripadnosti je še posebej očitno v novo uvedenih etnonacionalnih modalitetah. Po drugi strani pa rezultati kvantitativnega raziskovanja kažejo, da je kazalnik maternega jezika kljub izrazitemu procesu etnolingvističnega razslojevanja, še vedno bolj objektiven v primerjavi z nacionalno pripadnostjo, kar mu daje položaj metodološkega korektiva, ne zgolj v etnodemografskem, temveč tudi v drugem sociometričnem raziskovanju.

(IT) Abstract/SINTESI: In questo contributo vengono presentati in senso cronologico i cambiamenti delle nomenclature statistiche relative all'appartenenza linguistica nei censimenti della popolazione in Serbia. Inoltre, è stata analizzata l’influenza dell’introduzione di nuove modalità etnonazionali sulle categorizzazioni linguistiche. Abbiamo esaminato l’uso del concetto di lingua materna attraverso le analisi comparative del numero degli abitanti caratterizzati da una certa dichiarazione nazionale e della relativa lingua materna. Nell’analisi abbiamo anche impiegato un
approccio di intersezione dei dati etnostatistici con l’obbiettivo di individuare le diversificazioni della lingua materna all’interno degli stessi gruppi etnici. I risultati della ricerca implicano vari livelli di disparità tra il numero degli abitanti dichiaratisi in senso nazionale e il numero degli abitanti delle lingue relative. Le deviazioni rilevanti dalla compatibilità tra all'appartenenza nazionale e quella linguistica sono soprattutto visibili nelle modalità etnonazional recentemente introdotte. D’altra parte i risultati delle ricerche quantitative dimostrano che, nonostante il marcato processo di stratificazione etnolinguistica, gli attributi della lingua materna sono più obiettivi rispetto all'appartenenza nazionale, il che li rende un correttivo metodologico non solo nelle ricerche etnodemografiche,ma anche in tutte le altr e ricerche sociometriche.

Migration is one the most important demographic component to determine the size, growth and structure of population of a particular region, besides fertility and mortality. For a large country like India, the study of movement of population in different parts of the country helps in understanding the dynamics of the society and societal change better. Bhubaneswar is one of the magnets for migrants in east India attributing to its exponential growth rates. This is an attempt  to map the migration pattern in the city and the state.

The book deals with the analysis of the data of the national tax census from 1828, which refer to three free royal cities and thirteen markets of Bačko-Bodroška County in the Kingdom of Hungary. The mentioned census represents a very valuable historical source for the economic and demographic history of Hungary, ie the mentioned settlements. The results of the census were once used for a detailed analysis of the property and production relations of the taxed population - which provided certain guidelines for the necessary reforms.


Knjiga se bavi analizom podataka zemaljskog poreskog popisa iz 1828. godine, koje se odnose na tri slobodna kraljevska grada i trinaest trgovišta Bačko-Bodroške županije u Kraljevini Mađarskoj. Pomenuti popis predstavlja veoma vredan istorijski izvor za privrednu i demografsku istoriju Ugarske odnosno pomenutih naselja. Rezultati popisa poslužili su svojevremeno za detaljnu analizu posedovnih i proizvodnih odnosa oporezovanog stanovništva - što je dalo određene smernice i za neophodne reforme.

This article investigates the concept of black food among the Lake Yessei Yakut in Siberia. With reference to two sources, archival records from the Russian Polar North Census of 1926-27 and contemporary fieldwork material, I investigate the local diet based on subsistence fishing and hunting and the food exchanges it entails. The article looks into changes that affected the food habits and concludes with an analysis of the social meaning of the concept of black food.

Transitions in the American religious landscape including religious non-affiliation, congregational and seminary enrollment declines, and the proliferation of megachurches have reshaped the clergy labor market and increased the precariousness of this type of work. One potential indication of this growing instability is the supposedly increasing number of bivocational clergy who depend on a second job to supplement their income. There is little reliable data, however, that can trace out national-level trends of bivocational clergy. Using Current Population Survey data, this study tests whether there has been any proportional increase in bivocational clergy and to what extent such an increase has been localized to certain groups. We find that the percentage of clergy who report having a second job has not increased since 1996. However, clergy who are female, unmarried, or working in the American northeast are increasingly likely to report working a second job. These trends suggest that clergy who receive occupational advantages―due to gender or marital status―or who live in highly religious/low cost-of-living regions of the country may be protected from taking on a second job whereas those clergy without these advantages increasingly must depend on additional sources of income.

Partially rooted in British colonial ethnology and administration, the ethnic categories of the 2014 Myanmar census have attracted controversy, particularly from representatives
of non-Burman political organizations. The categories themselves, as well as the bureaucratic exercise of the census, have a complex genealogy which offers considerable insight into understanding the contemporary situation. Drawing from
Hirschman’s theory that the study of measurements of ethnicity is a unique resource
for understanding the meaning of ethnicity in a society, this article discusses the controversy surrounding the 2014 census, and how some census-related issues have been crucially framed by bureaucratic structures that came before.

El pensamiento occidental consolida durante el siglo XIX una forma de saber –la estadística- que sentará las bases de un extraordinario proceso de conocimiento y de control de la sociedad. Íntimamente ligada al análisis de la población, la razón estadística occidental encontrará un campo de primer orden para su desarrollo en la labor de los sistemas estadísticos nacionales, cuya tarea fundamental consistirá en afrontar el reto de representar las peculiaridades de cada nación a partir de los instrumentos de una ciencia universal. Partiendo de esta premisa, Estadística y Nación explora las fuentes ideológicas, políticas y científicas en las que abrevaron los estadísticos argentinos para clasificar, medir e interpretar los decisivos cambios sociales y demográficos ocurridos entre la caída de Rosas y la Primera Guerra mundial.  Para ello recorre aspectos tales como la formación de los técnicos y las reparticiones del sistema estadístico argentino y las imágenes elaboradas sobre el trabajo, la educación, la mujer, la propiedad, la urbanización,  las migraciones, los grupos étnicos y las perspectivas de la población futura. Explora asimismo las funciones de propaganda e insumo para la acción pública adjudicadas a las estadísticas; la influencia del fatalismo estadístico y de las diferentes concepciones de determinismo; y las continuidades y originalidades interpretativas del pensamiento censal argentino de la “edad del entusiasmo”. Situado en la encrucijada de la historia de la población, de la formación de las elites estatales y de las ciencias sociales de vocación cuantitativa, el libro propone un análisis crítico de un amplio conjunto de categorías definidas por los cuadros tecno-burocráticos del liberalismo decimonónico, muchas de las cuales continúan formando parte de la auto-percepción de los argentinos.

רשימת "חלוקה" היא רשימה שהיתה נכתבת מידי שנה בידי "רוזני וילנה" - שהיה הגוף הממונה על "כולל הפרושים" על שתי קהילותיו - ירושלים וצפת, ובה רשימת הסכומים שעל גבאי הכולל בא"י לתת לכל אחד ואחד מחברי הכולל.
הרשימה שלפנינו מבוססת למעשה על רשימת מפקד אותה ערכו הפרושים בא"י ככל הנראה כבר בסוף שנת תקצ"ז (1837), ומשקפת לפיכך את אוכלוסיית קהילת הפרושים בירושלים אז.
חשיבותה של הרשימה בכך שהיא משקפת את מצב הקהילה בין רעידת האדמה בצפת בחורף תקצ"ז (1837) בה נספו 156 מבני הקהילה, כשהרוב הגדול של הניצולים ברחו ועברו לאחר מכן לירושלים, ובין המגפות שהתחוללו בירושלים בשנים תקצ"ח-ט (1838-9).

This article is a critical review of racial and ethnic categories on the U.S. Census with a focus on how the census categories affect opportunities to track racial and ethnic inequality. The authors summarize how motivations behind the census categories changed from a historical basis in controlling people of color and protecting Whiteness toward a contemporary orientation around equity. Yet, many issues remain that confound the racial and ethnic census data, which are then used in research. A look at these issues and possible changes for the upcoming 2020 census serves as a critical reminder of the limitations of the census data. Taking this information into account, the authors conclude with comments and suggestions on the principles underlying racial and ethnic data collection on the census and the implications for tracking inequality.

This essay explores the unstable racial positioning of Arabs and Muslims in the United States by analyzing the implications of their censusless/white legal status coupled with their hypervisible racialization through containment,
surveillance, and repression in the War on Terror context. The author situates Arab/Muslim racialization within a genealogical overview of racial formations of power in the United States and particularly focuses on how these processes have conditioned the historical and current legal status of Arabs as white on the U.S. decennial census. Next, the author examines the 2018 decision by the U.S. Census Bureau to omit a separate category for Middle Eastern and North African communities in 2020. The author demonstrates how racially tinged moral panics of Arab/Muslim proclivity for violence, terrorism, and radical extremism, coupled with their invisibilization through their white legal status, cultivates the breeding grounds
for expansive forms of racial state violence for other communities as well. Drawing from scholar-activist research while working with the Arab community in the San
Francisco Bay Area during the 2010 census campaign, the author concludes by offering examples of how censusless communities can work to strengthen their collective well-being in the absence of a given census category

This is a transcription of early New Brunswick census relating to the Westmorland and Albert County area of south eastern New Brunswick. It may be examined in conjunction with my other paper, "The Wanders" which is a partial analysis of the early census.

This article concentrates on how census data are processed by statistical offices. It first investigates how the language categories displayed in language statistics are actually formed. After that, it considers the mechanisms by which speakers are assigned to specific language categories. With both processes, it addresses the underlying language ideologies, and the ways in which a certain view of the world is thus transported and reinforced. Finally, it discusses how these practices are linked with the paradigms of statehood and territoriality, and how they have been developed historically in the contexts of colonization and of ethno-national conflict. The paper draws on censuses and statistics in Austria to explore these questions, but the procedures used correspond to those in other countries that follow the guidelines set by the Conference of European Statisticians (United Nations 2006).

In this article, I argue that census language questions, policies and ideologies are intertwined and mutually reinforcing. Thus, analyses of census language questions
must examine the specific policies for which language statistics are produced, as well as the ideologies that undergird those policies and the production of language statistics. After examining the history of language questions and related policies in the US, I apply this approach in an analysis of the US Census Bureau’s current language question, arguing that US language policy as well as official statistics on multilingualism are constrained by monolingual ideologies that center on English as the key point of reference and the marker of full personhood and national belonging. My analysis focuses on four interrelated realms: 1) US language policy and its emphasis on “Limited English Proficiency” in assigning language rights, 2) the broader ideological context, 3) the language question itself, and 4) the impact of language ideologies on survey design and data collection within the US Census Bureau.
