Archaeological heritage

The paper examines urban integration of archaeological heritage in the town of Zadar via analysis of the town’s history and urban development; the history of archaeological research and archaeological heritage protection and preservation; and the analysis of the relevant developed urban or spatial planning documents in relation to archaeological
heritage. The history of archaeological research, of archaeological heritage protection and preservation and of urban and spatial planning in Zadar have not yet been systematically scientifically researched, and cover the period between the late 19th century (first archaeological excavations) and 2015.

In this article, written within the framework of the European Curbatheri-Deep Cities project, we explain our thoughts on new ways of approaching the conservation of urban heritage in the cities of Barcelona (Sant Andreu) and London (Woolwich). Although special emphasis has been placed on historical methods to describe, interpret and evaluate the urban heritage defined by historical transformations, less attention has been paid to the way in which the knowledge and uses contributed by society can be integrated. In this sense, the use of different ethnographic methodologies as an instrument for fostering dialogue between stakeholders.

A log-coffin excavated in the early nineteenth century proved to be well enough preserved in the early twenty-first century for the full armoury of modern scientific investigation to give its occupants and contents new identity, new origins and a new date. In many ways the interpretation is much the same as before: a local big man buried looking out to sea. Modern analytical techniques can create a person more real, more human and more securely anchored in history. This research team shows how.

Découverte lors de fouilles clandestines en octobre 2011, sur le site antique d’Apamée, cette mosaïque inédite représente une scène très rare et hautement symbolique : la fondation d’Antioche par Séleucos Ier Nicator vers 300 avant J.-C. Aujourd’hui cette œuvre du IVe siècle de notre ère est recherchée  par Interpol.
Il s’agit d’une scène de sacrifice.
La première identification de la mosaïque d’Apamée et son étude approfondie a été réalisée avec le consentement de la DGAMS-Direction Générale des Antiquités et des musées de Syrie et de son Directeur Général, Prof. Maamoun Abdulkarim, en 2016.

The project “ Northwest Rock Art Route” aims to explore Portuguese NW rock art resource potentialities as capable of increase sustainable development of touristic practices.
The Portuguese NW is rich in open-air post-Palaeolithic rock art, especially from the designated Atlantic Art, specific from the area. Along with its scientific value, its strategic character should integrate programs of territory development and organization.
In order to achieve that, some scientific needs have to be overcome, like data compilation and systematization, promoting scientific knowledge and allowing attractive discourses to general public.
The project intends to deepen rock art research according to archaeological and anthropological perspectives, to contribute to its protection, and to promote its valorisation in the western façade of Portuguese NW. Ultimately, it pretends to create the sustainable touristic product “Northwest Rock Art Route”. It also aims to transform its related “intangible” heritage in something profitable, so as the involved project partnerships human resources, and increase the sustainable development of the addressed area.
The materialized and/or in process of materialization actions will be presented, so as the different achieved results from each NW area.

Resumo:
A Rota de Arte Rupestre do Noroeste é um projeto que pretende explorar as potencialidades da arte rupestre do NW de Portugal enquanto recurso  passível de desenvolvimento de uma prática turística sustentável.
O NW português é uma área rica em arte rupestre de ar livre de cronologia pós-paleolítica, em especial do estilo designado de Arte Atlântica, específico da área. Além do seu inegável valor científico, o caráter estratégico deste recurso patrimonial deveria integrar programas de desenvolvimento e de organização do território.
Para que tal se concretize há que colmatar carências ao nível da investigação, tais como a compilação e sistematização dos dados que promovam o avanço do conhecimento científico e, simultaneamente, propiciem discursos atrativos para o público em geral.
O projeto tenciona aprofundar a investigação da arte rupestre segundo perspetivas arqueológicas e antropológicas, contribuir para salvaguardar este património arqueológico e promover a sua valorização na fachada ocidental no NW de Portugal, por forma a que se possa criar o produto turístico sustentável “Rota de Arte Rupestre do Noroeste”. Visa, ainda, rentabilizar o património “intangível” ligado a estes recursos, os recursos humanos das parcerias envolvidas no projeto – e incrementar o desenvolvimento sustentável do território abordado.
Serão divulgadas as ações já materializadas e/ou em vias de materialização, bem como os resultados atingidos para diferentes áreas do NW.

Cada vez más se observa cómo diversas instituciones museísticas van incorporando visitas virtuales y reproducciones 3D de las piezas más destacadas. Ambos casos son esenciales en el acercamiento del conocimiento para todo tipo de personas e intereses. Poder estudiar
una pieza sin moverla de su ubicación, ni manipularla, son estimulantes ventajas para su conservación. Las posibilidades que ofrecen estas reproducciones para el especialista son incuestionables, incluso sin tener que acercarse a la institución: ampliación o giro de la misma para analizar todos los detalles. Cualquier objeto arqueológico es susceptible de ser representado virtualmente mediante un modelo digital tridimensional. Podemos obtener modelos 3D de objetos o escenas digitalizando con un escáner 3D o mediante fotografía digital, con los
llamados sistemas de modelado basado en imágenes. Esta comunicación analiza el proceso de obtención del objeto virtual a partir de la pieza ibérica y el valor que adquiere la imagen en el contexto museístico actual.

What is the role of cultural heritage in constructing futures? How can a UNESCO Chair provide tools for creative futures thinking and future-making? And how does archaeology relate to that? This interview develops the concept of heritage futures and calls the attention of the “heritage sector” to broad interdisciplinarity and open-minded collaborations with partners outside of academia and industry, among others. Here, Dr. Cornelius Holtorf, archaeologist, Professor of Archaeology, Director of the Graduate School in Contract Archaeology (GRASCA) and UNESCO Chair on Heritage Futures at Linnaeus University talks about his ongoing projects/ideas and comments on the impact of tourism and covid-19 on cultural heritage, heritage futures and future literacy.
