This Essay seeks to draw connections between race, sexual orientation, and social science in Supreme Court litigation. In some respects, advocates for racial minorities and sexual minorities face divergent trajectories. Among those asserting civil rights claims, LGBT rights claimants have been uniquely successful at the Court ever since Romer v. Evans in the mid-1990s. During this period, advocates for racial minorities have fought to preserve earlier victories in cases such as Regents of the University of California v. Bakke and have failed to overturn precedents that strictly limit equal protection possibilities, such as McCleskey v. Kemp. Nonetheless, we argue that the Court’s “fear of too much justice” links race and sexual orientation cases and helps to explain victories as well as losses. Even when advocates win in a case like Obergefell v. Hodges or Grutter v. Bollinger, the Court carefully cabins its opinion so as not to destabilize the social hierarchy. We illustrate this claim through a close examination of the use of social science in Obergefell. The Court disregarded evidence suggesting that same-sex couples and parents experience positive differences, as compared to heterosexuals, such as instilling greater respect for gender and sexual orientation equality in their children. The Court also asserted the innocence of opponents of same-sex marriage, ignoring evidence linking the denial of access to marriage to homophobia. In short, a movement to upend homophobic marriage laws was itself confined by homophobia, which influenced which arguments lawyers and Justices could articulate.

In parallel to the broad diversity of musical styles that accompanied the early punk explo sion, the graphic design and visual communication strategies tell a similarly wide-ranging story. This chapter explores the complex relationship between the stereotype of "authen tic" do-it-yourself (DIY) punk graphics and the music industry professionals who created many of the visual conventions that came to be closely associated with the subculture. While the groundswell of amateur artists, illustrators, photographers, typographers, and other cultural producers inspired by the subculture to create a new aesthetic should not be underestimated, their story has become almost the default history of punk graphic de sign. The role of design professionals-often with many years of experience within the music industry-has frequently been overlooked, an embarrassing secret kept in the clos et for fear of undermining notions of authenticity and punk's revolutionary rhetoric.

Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences

This paper, jointly written by participants of a workshop held in 2021, argues for an increased recognition and application of neutron activation analysis (NAA) in the archaeology of the ancient Mediterranean. Discussing the methodological strengths and challenges, it highlights the great potential NAA has for collecting proxy data from ceramics in order to develop progressive concepts of archaeological research within and beyond the Mediterranean Bronze and Iron Age, pointing out opportunities to revisit long-held assumptions of scholarship and to refine visual/macroscopic provenance determinations of pottery. To take full advantage of NAA’s strengths toward a better understanding of the socioeconomic background of ceramics production, distribution, and consumption, the paper emphasises the need for both interdisciplinary collaboration and basic data publication requirements.

Industrial noise is one of the most common physical factors that cause annoyance and damage to workers' health in the long term. Precautions should be taken to reduce noise and to improve acoustic performance in industrial working environments. This paper aims to analyze the acoustic performance of the automotive industry contributes to the global outcomes of sustainability and develop strategies for improving the quality of the working environment through improvement scenarios. For this purpose, the automotive industry in Türkiye was examined as a case study. In-situ acoustic measurements were made in the seat manufacturing unit of an automotive factory, and the current situation was transferred to the simulation program. The effects of acoustic improvements on A-weighted sound pressure level and reverberation time at mid-frequencies (500, 1000, 2000 Hz) were investigated through three scenarios. In the investigations, noise distributions were carried out through noise mapping. The A-weighted sound pressure levels in the automotive industry were reduced by approximately 15 dB. As a result of the study, suggestions for noise control precautions and their effects on the automotive industry seat manufacturing unit are presented.

Tóm tắt: Bài viết này truy nguồn tác phẩm Tân đính Quốc dân độc bản do trường Đông Kinh Nghĩa Thục tổ chức in ấn ở Việt Nam năm 1907. Thông qua khảo cứu và đối chiếu với các nguồn thư tịch Đông Tây, bài viết cho rằng nguồn gốc đầu tiên của tác phẩm trên là cuốn The Citizen Readercủa Arnold-Forster (1855-1909), in lần đầu tại Anh năm 1886. Người Nhật cũng sớm mô phỏng cuốn sách này để biên soạn nhiều cuốn Quốc dân độc bản khác nhau. Một trong các bản tiếng Nhật ấy đã ảnh hưởng tới một bản Quốc dân độc bản của Chu Thụ Nhân được xuất bản tại Trung Quốc năm 1903. Đến lượt mình, bản tiếng Trung Quốc đã ảnh hưởng sang Việt Nam, khiến sĩ phu Việt Nam đầu thế kỉ XX đã mô phỏng, tiết lược và viết thành cuốn Tân đính Quốc dân độc bản (1907). Vì vậy cuốn sách của Việt Nam đã trải qua ba tầng ảnh hưởng từ Anh, Nhật, Trung, giúp ta hình dung về quá trình giao lưu thư tịch từ Tây sang Đông và hiện đại hoá tri thức ở thời cận đại. Các tác giả của mỗi nước đã tạo nên sự khác biệt cho cuốn sách của mình bằng việc bổ sung tri thức bản quốc, nhưng cho dù thay đổi như thế nào, thì ấn phẩm ở các nước vẫn giữ được cái lõi là tri thức tân học, tri thức phương Tây. Từ khoá: Quốc dân độc bản, Tân đính Quốc dân độc bản, Việt Nam, giao lưu thư tịch, tân thư Abstract: This paper traces the sources of the Revised Version of the Citizen Reader published by the Tonkin Free School in Vietnam in 1907. Through research and comparison with bibliographic sources from East and West, the paper surmises that the originary source of that work is The Citizen Reader by Arnold-Forster (1855-1909), first published in England in 1886. Japanese people soon imitated it to compile different versions of The Citizen Reader. One of those Japanese versions has influenced a version of The Citizen Reader by Zhu Shuren published in China in 1903. The Chinese version in turn spread its influence to Vietnam, causing Vietnamese literati at the beginning of the twentieth century to imitate, abridge and recompile it into the Revised Version of the Citizen Reader (1907). The Vietnamese book has therefore experienced three layers of influece from England, Japan and China, which helps us to imagine the process of book exchange from the West to the East and the modernization of knowledge in the late imperial period. Though the authors from each country have given their books their distinctiveness through the supplement of local knowledge, regardless of the changes, the publications in the various countries still maintain a core of new learning and Western knowledge. This doctoral dissertation is a study of fish remains from a site on the Pacific coast of Panama. The objective is to determine through a study of the fish bones whether fish were subjected to preservative technologies at the site and whether the site may have served as specialized location to prepare fish to transport to settlements situated further inland.
